01.17.16 | Rec me br00tal anime. |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | Mnemosyne. Pretty fucking brutal. Also, titties galore. Softcore ero-guro
My homie keeps telling me to get into Stein's Gate. He also got me into Madoka Magica so he has pretty decent recs. I guess I'll have to get around to it. |
Calc
01.17.16 | there's one where these people get infused with bug abilities and fight giant anthropomorphic cockroaches, it's pretty brutal but the version they aired was heavily censored. if you can find the uncensored version its pretty gory. |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | What's it called though |
Calc
01.17.16 | i cant rememberrrrrr dammit. |
ChoccyPhilly
01.17.16 | @calc the premise sounds awful :L |

01.17.16 | terra formars that's it. |

01.17.16 | it's not stimulating to the mind but you asked for br00tal and that's br00tal |

01.17.16 | One Punch Man is fucking awesome. |
Oceandrowned
01.17.16 | Ergo Proxy. Its like listening to dark and obscure metal. Comes with one of prettiest graphic design i ever seen. Lain is good too.
PS Welcome to NHK is awesome. Very bizzare and strange moments present here as well as actual feel for characters. |
ChoccyPhilly
01.17.16 | @sixdegrees Thank you, you understand the struggle.
@angrylittlealchemist Yes, I understand but it just felt a little bubblegum at times. It wasn't that I didn't acknowledge the themes present, I just wish they were done with a bit more darkness as it felt like it had more potential for creepiness than it used. Like, the chimera guy was pretty cool but his insanity was kind of portrayed a little too calm and collected. There were many positives too but nothing that stood out beyond the enjoyment of most animes |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | Welcome to the NHK didn't have a great ending but that was about all that was wrong with it. The whole shut-in socially awkward man child character reminded me too much of people that I know. That and girls with no self esteem falling for really shitty people. It got a little too real at times but what a great fucking show. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.17.16 | Ergo Proxy was visually amazing but was painfully drawn out and meandering a lot of the time. still good but yeah. |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | I agree. Ergo Proxy was a visual feast but I never felt engaged by the character or the story. It felt like it was trying too hard to be thought-provoking and brooding. |
ChoccyPhilly
01.17.16 | That's what Serial Experiments Lain is a bit like, actually. Will give it a go once I get round to finish When They Cry |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.17.16 | "It felt like it was trying too hard to be thought-provoking and brooding."
yep |

01.17.16 | One Punch Man is fucking awesome.[2]
have not seen any of the other ones on your list but yeah the manga to it is awesome as well |
ChoccyPhilly
01.17.16 | Steins;Gate is a masterpiece. Do get round to it when you can. |
Avagantamos
01.17.16 | I've heard that brotherhood was better than the original. from what my friend told me it cuts out a lot of unnecessary filler. I haven't seen either of them yet though |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | I forget, is Brotherhood the one that followed along with the actual manga or was that the original? I didn't think that FMA was really a terrific series but Greed really made it for me. One of the best characters I've ever come across. |
TheSpirit
01.17.16 | Fate/zero
Blue Gender
Blood+ |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | How good is Fate/Zero on a scale of 1-10 |
ChoccyPhilly
01.17.16 | I think Brotherhood followed the manga but I believe the original's ending was good on its own merit. It was alright. |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | I stopped watching the original when I realized that it wasn't based off of the manga (which I had read quite a bit while growing up). Should I go back and watch the orignal? |
SharkTooth
01.17.16 | I might check 1 out eventually, it would be a nice time-killer as I wait for Jojo part 4 |
ChoccyPhilly
01.17.16 | No, I watched the 51 episode one, which I'm pretty sure is the original. I do get what you mean and I felt that way at times too, like I loved how it made Alphonse seem so vulnerable, despite his literal hardness but I dunno, I felt like it could have been more.
@zippa what ^ said |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | It suddenly clicked that your username is literally Edward Elric. I am too drunk.
Alright, it sounds like it is worth a shot. As soon as I finish up Psycho-Pass I will give it a whirl. |
ChoccyPhilly
01.17.16 | Is PyschoPass worth it? My flatmate has been telling me to watch it but he can't defend his opinions for shit and expects me to just watch whatever he recommends without reasoning. Naturally, I end up sceptical. |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | I have to say, I initially ignored Psycho-Pass because I thought the premise was completely banal. The idea of an entire universe based around thought-crime was just a little bit too silly for me. The show can be a little bit cheesy and self-absorbed at times but the sub-stories occurring from episode to episode are absolutely riveting. It is one of the sickest, creepiest Anime I have ever watched. It has kept me up at night on a few occasions. The premise is mediocre, the characters are more or less cookie cutter but the episodes themselves are quite a treat. It's also a pretty good looking show. I would definitely recommend it. |
ChoccyPhilly
01.17.16 | Well, bubblegum not for most anime but for a lot of shows, yeah it just felt like standard run of the mill anime that didn't stand out in any particular way and i felt like it would have more if it just were a bit creepier. Maybe that's just what I've been looking for in anime though. Yeah, I briefly looked into Welcome to the NHK and it looks good, I'll see if I can get to it.
Same with Psycho-Pass but I just hope there's not enough bad in it to put me off for good
|
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | It's really not as bad as I probably made it sound. I just really don't go for that kind of 1984-esque shit. But it is a really good show if you can get by how much of a blatant strong-silent type Kogami is. |
Asdfp277
01.17.16 | Madoka |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | I think we are talking about different shows. You may have just spoiled Stein's Gate for me haha |
ChoccyPhilly
01.17.16 | Pretty much. It was generic but generic with a unique twist and just done really well. I enjoyed it so much more than Shiki, which is arguably a lot less generic |
LotusFlower
01.17.16 | steins;gate is the best yeah |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | Haha, shit happens.
What is with anime and using :;!///,... in the title |
LotusFlower
01.17.16 | make it look all techy and sciencey or something i dont know. In steins;gate's case i suppose its a play on the fact that a semicolon is used in programming languages to indicate the end of a command line, which would tie in to Steins;gate's time travel elements. |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | Well that makes sense I suppose. Still it's funny
Durarara!!
Fate/Zero
Steins;Gate
Rosario+Vampire
Blood+ |
ChoccyPhilly
01.17.16 | Well, I suppose that's the thing because i feel like the overly long beginning allows us to see the chemistry between the characters and I quite liked them all in the end and the emphasis on how it affect Okabe was the main thing that really kept me going |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | Unrelated to the current conversation going on but have any of you watched Neon Genesis Evangelion? And was it worth it despite the main character being generally unlikable? |
ChoccyPhilly
01.17.16 | Nah, I couldn't disagree with the man more but I see where he's coming from. Like, he's saying that there wasnt enough emphasis on Karisu and Okabe but... I feel like that misses the point and I wasn't after a romance, so I liked how secondary and subtle it is. |
Drummerboy123
01.17.16 | One Punch Man is the best here. As much as I love Steins Gate it took too long to get going. OPM is just insanely fun to watch from start to end.

01.17.16 | yeah, same. I watched the typical yu gi oh and shaman king when I was younger but nothing great. Attack on titan reignited my interest in anime and I've been trying to get into darker anime. I just hope to find time to squeeze all this anime in my life cos uni work and shit |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | Attack on Titan was very good but I feel afraid to get attached to any of the characters considering they die so suddenly |
ChoccyPhilly
01.17.16 | It is the one show that completely puts me on edge as to who the real enemy is. The OVA also added to this.
Like on one hand, you have the titans killing anything and everything... but they seem misunderstood, almost doing things against their will like in the OVA and with Annie... it's so ambigious, there MUST be a reason to all of this killing that goes deeper than what the humans and audience knows and thinks to know.
And then you get the humans, who are so corrupt and deluded and unlikable that I kind of want to empathise with the titans a bit more.
I'd love to see more anime like this |
ZippaThaRippa
01.17.16 | I just hope it doesn't turn out to be one of those stories where the author never really thought about the resolution to all of the mystery that they introduced and the denouement turns out to be a total cop out. |
CaimanJesus
01.17.16 | Obligatory boku no pico rec |
Rolling Girl
01.17.16 | I heard Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was better than the original, either way I loved Brotherhood.
You should try Bakemonogatari |
ApocalypticCows
01.17.16 | Go watch Monster now |
ComeToDaddy
01.17.16 | idk if you're open to reading manga, but you'd fucking love Berserk from the sounds of things. Strongly recommend checking it out. For anime, you'd dig Fate/Zero and Monster. Only issue with Monster might be length, since it's 20+ eps longer than FMA. (btw someone may have already pointed this out, but Brotherhood was much better than the FMA you watched. And it's not shortened like you said, it's 13 eps longer)
I thought When They Cry wasn't very good, they kinda hamfist everything and rely too heavily on the shock factor but it more-or-less depends on how big a kick you get out of that shit. I thought Shiki was worth watching just to see what the doctor would do next, as well as for the OVAs. They were definitely the highlight to me. |
p4p
01.17.16 | Hokuto No Ken dude. My muscles grew just by watching one episode. |
CrazyDiamond7
01.17.16 | Elfen Lied and Hellsing Ultimate. |
EvoHavok
01.17.16 | Oh, thank you for the spoiler alert on 4, otherwise I'd have been pissed cuz I want to watch that.
Monster, Fate/Zero, Death Parade, Hellsing Ultimate, Black Lagoon, Claymore. |
CalculatingInfinity
01.17.16 | Steins;Gate's first 4 episodes were boring enough for me never to watch it again, also I second watching NHK. |

01.17.16 | Doctor Who rules bro |
CalculatingInfinity
01.17.16 | Also Shiki's opening is from Buck Tick so approve. |
EvoHavok
01.17.16 | Main reason I wanna watch that, tbh. |
Tunaboy45
01.17.16 | Only anime I've ever really watched is the hayao miyazaki films. Unless Yo Gi Oh counts when I was little.
And yes Rowan, Dr Who rules again now Matt Smith is gone |
Rowan5215
01.17.16 | Yeah but Matt Smith was the best Doctor ever tho, I'll admit he had some weak ass writing and Capaldi has had far better seasons but Smith is still my main man |
ChoccyPhilly
01.17.16 | Dr Who turned to shit after matt Smith left, through no fault of capaldi but the writing is so darn cheesy and predictable. It's difficult to care when they're not really in any danger |
Rowan5215
01.17.16 | lol the writing last season has been the best it has been for about four years bro |
Tunaboy45
01.17.16 | Heaven Sent is one of the best episodes since the show relaunched, really well written and Capaldi just nailed it. |
Tunaboy45
01.17.16 | Tennant will always be my doctor |
UpwardSpiral
01.17.16 | I would recommend switching to reading Seinen manga. There are a lot of fucking awesome stories that will never get animated for various reasons or have horrible adaption (GANTZ). For anime:
Suspense/Psychological:
Death Note, Monster, Baccano!, Code Geass
Gambling:
Kaiji, One Outs
Classics:
Ghost in the shell: Stand alone complex, Trigun, Berserk
Funny:
Great Teacher Onizuka, Detroit Metal City
|
CalculatingInfinity
01.17.16 | I need to watch GTO. |
Rowan5215
01.17.16 | Heaven Sent is like objectively one of the greatest episodes ever. I had a feeling Tennant would be your doc lol - I respect the opinion but cannot fucking stand him at all |
Tunaboy45
01.17.16 | Haha what can I say, he just rubs me the right way. It's a shame Eccleston didn't get another series because he was pretty good. Heaven Sent was about as perfect as it gets, that sequence where he's repeating everything and breaking through the wall bit by bit was fantastic. |
dimsim3478
01.17.16 | every thing you said about Fullmetal Alchemist is wrong. it's hardly kiddie, everyone says Brotherhood is better, Brotherhood is longer than the original series, it's not bubblegum it's heartwrenching and soul-crushing, and it fucking RULES. |
Davil667
01.17.16 | If you're looking for something brutal, check Tokyo Ghoul. Totally digging it atm. |
Davil667
01.17.16 | Elfen Lied is also pretty awesome. |
Sabrutin
01.17.16 | Which When They Cry are you talking about? I'm guessing Higurashi. Read the visual novels if you can, there really is no comparison. |
Rik VII
01.17.16 | Monster |
Archelirion
01.17.16 | Which When They Cry are you talking about? I'm guessing Higurashi. Read the visual novels if you can, there really is no comparison. [2] Pretty much came here to say the same thing. Incredible stuff. |
CalculatingInfinity
01.17.16 | Elfen Lied gets worse on every watch, unfortunately a flawed diamond that could have been better. |
TheSpirit
01.17.16 | "How good is Fate/Zero on a scale of 1-10"
I would give it an 8/10. The animation, story, character development, action, pacing, is all fantastic. The only weakness is the ending, which isn't terrible, but just kind of eh. Still well worth it for the rest. It's amazing how invested you get in the characters for a show that's only two seasons long. I also recommend Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Bladeworks, which starts out a bit slower, but is ultimately just as good, and with (imo) a more satisfying ending. |
ChoccyPhilly
01.17.16 | lol sorry for not appreciating fullmetal as much as you did and brotherhood definitely isn't longer than the original.
There was nothing special about it, just some well done anime that didn't really bring too many surprises or emotional twists and turns. |
Sinternet
01.17.16 | watch teekyuu |
bloc
01.17.16 | Yeah I just discovered One Punch Man as well and it's pretty much changed my life |
RosaParks
01.17.16 | "but apparently the shortened re-make, Brotherhood, is terrible so yeah. "
dumbest thing i've read in awhile
brotherhood is good and it's not short by any means. it's fucking longer than the original. still overrated(it's #1 on myanimelist) but not bad by any means |
eaglefan1998
01.17.16 | Mawaru penguindrum and Shoujo Kakumei Utena are both great shows
Also, everything Satoshi Kon directed (4 movies and 1 13 eps serie, so not that much) |
Madbutcher3
01.17.16 | Texhnolyze is a good bet if you like Lain. Haibane Renmei is the most elite anime though.
Would otherwise recommend The Tatami Galaxy, The Eccentric Family, Shirobako, Kyousougiga, Kino's Journey, Berserk and probably a few other things. |
Oceandrowned
01.17.16 | Bakemonogotari 1st season is very hilarious stuff. Captain Harlock rules too. It's one of those epic space operas with mean pirates and giant spaceships. |
Mister Twister
01.17.16 | now and then, here and there is pretty grueling and upsetting
it's fantastic |
ApocalypticCows
01.17.16 | Now and Then, Here and There is my second favorite anime, Monster takes #1 though easy |
dimsim3478
01.17.16 | "lol sorry for not appreciating fullmetal as much as you did and brotherhood definitely isn't longer than the original."
Brotherhood is 64 episodes and original is 51. anyway i thought the series brought both surprises and emotional twists and turns; totally cool if you don't see it the same way, though.
i should probably watch Now and Then, Here and There again because i couldn't see it as anything more than a series of fucking horrific tragedies the first time around |
ApocalypticCows
01.18.16 | That's why I only made it through like 2 episodes of Gantz - it was way too dark to not seem to have a reason for it (at least not that early), but NaT, HaT at least makes a point about how awful forcing children to fight wars is |
ComeToDaddy
01.18.16 | Choccy still disputing a fact like length when several people have told him he's wrong and a cursory google search would clear it up lmao.
I'm halfway through Now and Then actually, and it kinda feels like they're just stuffing the tragedy down your throat before letting you get attached. Though maybe that's expecting too much from a 13 ep series, god damn it's overbearing though. |
tacos n stuff
01.18.16 | Boogiebop Phamtom was good but its basically a more confusing and less entertaining Paranoia Agent (in terms of episode structure) *shrugs* |
Madbutcher3
01.19.16 | Actually most of the Monogatari series is good. Tailed off with the more recent seasons but Bake - Nise - Second Season are real good. Katanagatari is a fun one too. |
Ending
01.29.16 | Madbutcher knows what's up. |
