The Anomalies of Artificial Origin
It's crazy to me that I was so unimpressed with this when it came out, because now I adore it. It's gone from being one of the only slamming brutal death metal (oh god, the ridiculousness of that descriptor) albums I enjoy, to one of my favorite death metal albums. Fantastic musicianship resulting in monstrous grooves punctuated by Matti Way's rhythmic gurgle. As Daylight Dies
I've always loved this album, but it always played second fiddle to TEOH until recently. Now, it's my favorite Howard-era, and second favorite KSE release overall. Here, they really perfected the melodeath instrumentals and soaring choruses. | | 4 |  | Arizmenda
Stillbirth in the Temple of Venus
This band/album has been getting some more attention around these parts lately, and I couldn't be happier; they are a band that truly deserves all the praise they receive. I fall more in love with this the more I listen to, and though the unrefined chaos of WTVOI is still my favorite, this isn't far behind. Murdunband's growth as a songwriter has been an amazing thing to witness, with this album standing as a pinnacle in black metal that is raw, melodic, eccentric, but true to the genre's roots. | | 5 |  | Castevet
Obsian
A pretty amazing release. They guys take off-kilter post-hardcore rhythms and play them in a black metal context in ways that sound completely natural. They produce some of the best anxiety-ridden build-ups to melodic crescendos that I've ever heard within the genre, and they do it in a way that is unmistakably their own. Atavism
The New York black metal scene has kind of always fallen under the shadow of its west coast counterpart, but it has an amazing array of worthwhile artists; Ordrhein being one of them. Featuring members of Castle of Purity, Atavism is buzzing, angry black metal with a surprising level of melodic depth. It's a release that could aid newcomers to raw black metal into the underground while easily pleasing longtime fans at the same time. | | 7 |  | Unearth
Watchers of Rule
Unearth are just fucking insane. As a band that still releases what is essentially mid-2000's melodic metalcore, they still manage to sound fresh and revitalizing in 2016. They've always been one of the more aggressive purveyors of the genre, but goddamn, my body was not ready for the intensity and aggression of this album. "Guard of Contagion" makes me want to break my fist on a brick wall. | | 8 |  | Cara Neir
Stagnant Perceptions
Though still months away, I am already preparing for the excellence that will be Cara Neir's next full-length. Stagnant Perceptions was my first experience with the band and it remains to be my favorite release of theirs. The juxtaposition of screamo/black metal is done SO perfectly, and in a completely new and exciting way. | |
