Favorite Atmospheric Black Metal Records
10Mare Cognitum
Phobos Monolith

Mare Cognitum is another one man band like Spectral Lore. Phobos Monolith is a dark and ambient black metal record that at times even delves into death metal. There are low growls and high screams all over and the track "Noumenon" is a very gorgeous and heavy track that brings on a very satisfying climax.
9Falls of Rauros
The Light That Dwells in Rotten Wood

Falls of Rauros employ a more folk metal sound to their music and rawer production. They have great acoustic interludes and the listener can really feel that these guys enjoy playing their instruments quite a bit.
8Spectral Lore
III

Spectral Lore's newest release III is completely intriguing from the unique album artwork to the trance-inducing black metal mixed with ambiance. It starts off with a very punishing track but later on shows more acoustic and ambient moments that are really unlike black metal at all. This album is dark and terrifying but also beautiful.
7Lantlos
.neon

Lantlos's .neon may fall into the same shoegaze-metal category that Deafheaven's Sunbather has but their are several key differences. Niege has been doing this style for years but with Lantlos, there is a jazz feel to .neon and more use of clean vocals. I think I am most drawn to this album since a lot of black metal albums do not feature very audible bass guitar and Lantlos really delivers on the low end instead of just the high end.
6Deafheaven
Sunbather

No matter where I look, when I see a review of Deafheaven I see the word "Polarizing." While black metal has always been mixed with other genres, Deafheaven really mastered their way of blending it with Sunbather. I greatly enjoyed this record and could not care less about whether it's been defined as hipster metal or what have you. It is a wonderful album that shows Deafheaven's distinct sound and ability to merge genres seamlessly.
5Winterfylleth
The Threnody of Triumph

Winterfylleth never fail to deliver a relentless, heavy album but The Threnody of Triumph definitely shows them at their best.
4Fen
Carrion Skies

Fen really hit the nail with Carrion Skies. It is heavier than their previous material and uses more post-rock elements instead of folk. Fans of the genre will really enjoy this LP.
3Abigail Williams
Becoming

Abigail Williams started out as a symphonic black metal band but has since changed their sound to a more raw and atmospheric work. These songs are much longer and have ditched the symphonic roots they became known for. The last track is well worth listening to especially.
2Wolves in the Throne Room
Two Hunters

While I love all of Wolves in the Throne Room's material, Two Hunters stands out as their best effort. At just four tracks, ranging from ambient sounding post-rock to intense metal with blood curdling shrieks, everything is timed just right and leaves the listener in a trance-like state throughout the entire album.
1Agalloch
Marrow of the Spirit

Agalloch have literally made the perfect atmospheric metal record. Each track is a piece of a greater machine that leaves the listener feeling very satisfied.
