Buckethead Pike Dispenser 1-100

The Chicken Man has finally done it. After less than 3 years Buckethead has released over 200 albums in his Pike series. Regardless of your opinion on his work, that in itself is quite an achievement, all things considered. Of course, with so many releases in such a small window of time (anywhere between 2-4 in a month) the quality of these pikes are often inconsistent. Thats why I've taken it upon myself to handpick the particular pikes from his catalogue that are worth your time (or even money) along with talking about the 5 best pikes in his library. For now, we will be doing 1-100 and eventually 101-200. So enjoy!

Pike 13

It's unlikely that anything like Pike 13 will happen ever again. The intimacy of this particular Pike is ever apparent in it's sound, presentation, and so forth.

It's calming introduction and delve into darkness through the next few tracks sees an emotional journey that feels genuine in it's sound. Unlike many of Buckethead's typical and signature styles primarily featured in his work. It's a mixture of innocence clashing with darkness and fear with the backing synths providing a narration of the arc that the album follows. Finally, the concluding fuzzy electric/acoustic guitar mixing of the climax and outro of the album provides a satisfying ending. It's a story that captivates and impresses through it's telling, and it's what makes Pike 13 the best and most interesting of Buckethead's entire catalogue.

Buckethead Pikes #78

It's argued wether or not this pike was written in response to the passing of Tom Carrol, Buckethead's father, due to how Pike releases work. But considering it's one of the few pikes that Buckethead has personally removed from his catalogue it's very likely that there was something more going on in the background.

It's even noticeable upon listening, the composition of Pike 78 differs vastly from other Pikes. With many of the smoother guitar work and atmosphere capturing a more intimate and original sound that differs from Buckethead's usual work. The album explores a more singular sound with it's composition. Making the album feel more like one flowing song than multiple tracks. The beauty of this album comes forth in latter half of the album that focuses on simplistic and interlacing melodies and very subdued drumming. It, just like Pike 13, both feature a rarely explored side of Buckethead that are more interesting than any other.

Empty Space

One of the first Pikes from Buckethead. The energy on this Pike in unmatched by the majority of his other work. Buckethead's signature riffing style combines with glitchy synths and schizophrenic percussion to create insane grooves and melodies that stick out like a fun, sore thumb. The experimental side of this album is just as intriguing too, providing a fresh and fun look into the Pike series.

Northern Lights

As Buckethead reached his 100th pike, he crafted a stretch of pikes that were insane in terms of quality and showcased some of his best work. Out of all of them, Northern Lights was arguably the best of them all. While only two tracks, both feature a progressive deconstruction and study of Buckethead's career up until this point in time. With an insane amount of his different sounds and styles blending into two explosive 10+ minute tracks. Crisp production and insane melodies. What more could you ask for?

Also, dat album cover.

The Mighty Microscope

The 100th Pike from Buckethead, and not the last either .._..

Much like Northern Lights, this album is an excellent showcase of everything Buckethead has built on in his pikes. Though this time around the composition takes a more straight-forward sound in it's presentation. Great solos abound on this album.
