10.21.15 Best Ulver Songs!

Best Ulver Songs!

This is a list of the top 5 Ulver songs. Please bear in mind this is, of course, entirely subjective. Additionally, I've not yet heard The Marriage, nor Kveld-whatever it's called - that weird folksy album. Anyway, without further ado!

Shadows of the Sun

Eos - What a song! Perhaps the most poignant of Ulver's songs, this one deals with the cyclical nature of life and death. A perfect mourner's song, the synths and strings are especially evocative in this one - it has an interesting excerpt at the end that I haven't been able to decipher, but it's gorgeous.

Messe I.X-VI.X

Glamour Box (Ostinati) - Here's a song that harks back to Ulver's Perdition City days, at first glance appearing to sound like some futuristic soundscape, but it quickly evolves into one of their most emotional pieces to date. The moment at around 3:30 in particularly is spine-tinglingly good. If only there were a visual aid as a companion piece to this, as it sounds befitting of a grandiose soundtrack.
3Ulver
Perdition City

Nowhere/Catastrophe - Probably the most straightforward track on this entire list, Nowhere/Catastrophe features a verse/chorus/verse/chorus structure akin to most mainstream songwriting formulas, but it's anything but. This is a love-letter to the '80s. Soaring keys and a beautiful cascading synth punches through the chorus to elevate it to great heights. It nails the dichotomy of electronic and organic in such a way that both elements seem integral to the song's dna.

Blood Inside

Blinded By Blood - A song whose likeness is closest to Eos on this list, Blinded By Blood sounds positively massive. Like Eos, this song features a gorgeous excerpt, but in this case it leads into the track with propulsive force, gradually building on synths and vocal manipulation, surrounded by this eerie atmosphere. Very powerful, often overlooked gem of a song.

Bergtatt - Et eeventyr i 5 capitler

Soelen gaaer bag Aase need - And here we arrive at the last song, which stands in STARK contrast to the rest, back in what many a listener would easily consider their heyday (re: not me). I'm told this album is a good amalgam of the two that proceed it, blending folk with metal. Who am I to argue; it certainly seems that way to me. This exact song most captures this, with one of the most gorgeously sung outros in their career
