The Color Before The Sun
I want to be more excited for this than I actually am. None of the early singles have grabbed me, honestly, and the lure of this being their first non-concept album really loses some of its luster when you consider that, hey, that's actually what most bands do pretty much all the time. But still, with these guys, I'm a loyalist--sometimes against my better judgment--so I still hold out hope. If nothing else, the ridiculously overpriced deluxe edition seems pretty nifty. | | 9 |  | Cheatahs

Well, for their part, Death Cab ended up releasing their best album in the better part of a decade, all while Walla was already very much on the outs. If I Should Go Before You
I feel like I've grown off of Dallas Green, though I can't precisely pinpoint why, since even though the he gets decent airplay on the local college radio station, and even if I were one to decry sell-outs like the 'zine-publishing punk twentysomething I surely was in another life, I'd hardly think that qualifies as over-saturation. I also remember liking the Hurry and the Harm more than a lot of people seemed to, so that's not it, either. I'm tentatively chalking it up to his ill-conceived, Civil Wars-aping duets album with good ol' Pink, since that's enough to make anybody rethink some things. But oh well. Not to get too bogged down in labels, but an interesting blend of what I guess you could consider emo, along with some grunge influence worn on their flannel sleeve. Money Shot
Based off the early singles and an interview with Maynard I saw in that paragon of journalism, Rolling Stone, it seems like this will be very much in the same vein as Conditions of My Parole, which was essentially an APC album, with all the atmosphere and compelling tone-painting that entails, masquerading beneath goofy album art. All of which is absolutely fine by me, since it's gonna be another dozen years (and, using the current rate, 27 remix EPs) before Tool even remotely starts to give actual concrete details on its fabled follow-up to 10,000 Days. | | 16 |  | Ryan Adams

Although Father John Misty may have already come out on top of this surreal mashup of homage, satire, and masturbation, my flickering interest in Ryan Adams' oeuvre always seems at its brightest, ironically, when he's working with someone else's source material. But if that entails somehow finding a way to make "Wonderwall" interesting again, that's pretty dang impressive. | |
