09.26.15 | best tips
1)to read a variety of reviews and ask what you liked from each of them.
2)practice.
if you're really self-conscious, create an alt and just post some of your first reviews on it to get a feel for your weak areas |

09.26.15 | dude if you dont sound professional thats a good thing. when i was your age i wanted to sound really smart, but i realized that people who try to sound smart just sound retarded. to capture the essence of what you mean to convey about an album, its better to be more like lester bangs than robert christgau |

09.27.15 | Before you start writing, have a general outline of what you want to say. Listen to the album intensely, writing down notes about each track to keep your thoughts together. From there, look for common threads: do any of those notes reflect a general trend throughout the album? Once you have 2 or 3 general threads together, those will be your body paragraphs. Try and think of a, for lack of a better word, thesis statement to tie those general points together and think about how those 2 or 3 threads can run together so your writing is coherent. Also, a thesaurus is your best friend. Hope that helps! |

09.27.15 | I Think I have the same issue, and it is even harder when English is not your native language which is my case, but soon I'm gonna go for it and see what happens. |

09.27.15 | What helped me out a lot was reading other reviews, and also the feedback from other users. I'd say the best advice I can give you is to post something, whether as a review or in the feedback thread that Johnny mentioned (who by the way is great at giving feedback), and listen to the criticisms of others. It's the best thing. Only real way to improve is to keep writing and getting feedback imo. |

09.27.15 | Usually I write everything on paper first (then I can write notes and scratch dumb stuff out but still have it there for reference) because it feels like a much more interactive medium than electronic text. I just put down ideas for things I want to go over in a review, then try to write about those things. I'll say sentences over to myself in my head and try to figure out how I'd explain things out loud to someone, then put that down on paper. Then expand it and keep going. Sometimes it's better to just forget about all your expectations and just write what comes to you, even if it's all garbage. That way you still have material and ideas to sift through even if you thought they were all bad when you wrote them. Then just slowly organize stuff, make it sound more intelligent, add details, and before you know it that 400 word short write-up is over 1000 words and you're worried about having written too much ;_; |

09.27.15 | it could be the album you're trying to review. depends on how organized and clear your thoughts on the release is, i have trouble with some for the reason while others are easy as pie. or maybe the album is just very expansive and hard to describe |

09.27.15 | Idk why but people in general REALLY hate everything I write, i dunno why but both in english and in spanish everyone hates what I write, idk they say I give off the impression I'm talking out of my ass and I'd really like to get better, what do you guys recommend I do? I just write whatever comes to my mind and hope for the best lmao |

09.27.15 | I didn't write my first review until after a year and a couple months after joining here. I find it harder to write about music than other stuff imo, but I might eventually write another if I keep practicing writing about music. |

09.27.15 | Read a lot, and when you find a structure or something that you like, try to deconstruct it and ask yourself why you like it. With practice you might eventually be able to incorporate it fluently into your own writing.
I'm a shit writer too but i'm pretty sure it's because i don't follow my own advice |
DoofusWainwright
09.27.15 | Make it at least a little entertaining and try and put some outside perspective in there so people will get something from reading your review even if they may not particularly like the album itself/genre
Oh and some people on here think you have to write a genre description and band biog at the start of every single review...you don't, it can be excruciatingly dull. Put a slant on these sort of details and cherry pick what matches the direction of the actual album you're reviewing (eg. New album marks a return to their roots so acceptable to the describe their early sound, etc) |
