My impression of Djokovic is still the 2008 version who tanked matches, complained when the crowd cheered for the other player, insulted the US Open audience in his post-match interview, and, oh yeah, beat my tennis idol in three straight major finals. He's certainly matured and he's the best player in the world, but man he pisses me off. |

09.11.15 | I don't even think he gets to the final... As a general rule, if Stan is still there in the second week and in good shape, shit gets real difficult for anyone that is playing against him. Obviously, Fed will have to try and disrupt Stan so that he can't get his momentum going... |

09.11.15 | "no way he loses to stan imo"
Problem for Fed going against Stan (or for that matter Djokovic) is that he can't maintain his game for the whole duration of three sets... When he's on point he's still pretty much the best player out there and it's usually as if his opponents can't even catch their breaths, but the problem is he usually let's them get back into the game in the second set. If you look the Stan vs Fed matches for the past two years, you'll notice that Stan looses in Maters tournaments, but will win the Majors as Stan has more time to get back in the game and overpower Fed with his amazingly powerful shots (arguably the best one handed backhand in the game and if not, definitely the strongest).
tl;dr idk opinions I guess... |

09.14.15 | he's won one slam in the last 3 years and was well past his best back then too. forehand, ground game, movement, consistency are a shadow of what they used to be, nowhere near as clutch etc. its a testament to the guy that his current level is still good enough to school most of the tour and he's a model example of a player aging well and readjusting his game but yeah he's undeniably way past his prime. saying "he still Owns!!" and being belligerent doesn't make you any less of a clueless nooblord so go away |
RadicalEd
09.14.15 | hate to break it to you futures, but that dude is 100% correct. Federer IS past his prime. Being past your individual prime just does not have the meaning you seem to think it has.
Federer was stronger a few years agon than he is now, he was basically untouchable for a few years (except when he played on sand against nadal). Now he's still easily in the top 4 of the world and can still beat anyone on a good day but he's nowhere near as dominant as he once was.
He's still way closer to his peak-form right now than any 34 year old player has the right to be, so i understand the urge to defend him from being ridiculed just because he lost against djokovic who is about as dominant right as Federer was in his absolute prime. |
TheCrocodile

09.14.15 | You reached your peak skillwise, and then you fail to consolidate that peak and instead drop off.
Now granted (and I never debated this) Federer past his peak-condition is still above 99,999% of other professional players. But it's still not his prime anymore.

bakkermaarten007
09.14.15 | I personally don't beleive he can't take on Djokovic anymore. He was victorious in the Cincinnatti final after all, in an impressive manner too.
I think Federer has a bad case of self-fulfilling prophecy every GS final. It seems to me- but ofcourse I'm speculating here- that he so badly wants to prove he can still play like in his glory years, that he just freezes up in the moments of truth.
The breakpoints in yesterday's final hint that direction as well. He almost played a flawles tournament, yet in the last match he fails to capitalize on the many break chances he had (only 3 out of 15)
Federer didn't ever have the iron mentality that Djokovic has. Back when he was so dominant, it was because he technically was superior, way above anyone else except on gravel. If he had Novak's mental strength I believe he would still be head and shoulders above all the rest.
Novak isn't a technically gifted player like Federer is, however with his willpower and just the right amount of professional tennis playing capabilities he can make every opponent feel desperate. |
OmairSh
09.14.15 | Federer is past his prime for sure, but he's still showing (in patches) displays that are on par with when he was in his prime. His form in the US open was great until the final.
@bakker: Lots of valid points there. When he was dominant he was not only technically superior, but he induced fear into his opponent. And for opponents overcoming that mental battle was part of the whole match. Now players like Nadal, Wawrinka, Djokovic, etc. don't fear him because he doesn't have that aura of invincibility anymore.
Djokovic is a ridiculous player. I was getting so frustrated when Federer was hitting the ball long or the net, while Djokovic was hitting impossible angles. I mean running around the court and reaching the ball is one thing, but to not only return the ball, but to hit winners is just ridiculous.
Federer did freeze up in crucial points, especially the break points, where he messed up some easy shots at times. Whats extra frustrating is how well Federer played throughout the tournament, only to make mistakes in the final. It's still a testament to his incredible tennis ability and physical fitness that he's able to go toe to toe with younger players in their prime, at 34 |
