09.03.15 | cd's are a wonderful thing |
BeyondCosby
09.03.15 | I never buy mp3s or torrent if I can help it. There's something beautiful about the packaging of a CD, for me it really demonstrates how much effort an artist has put into their work. There's also a nostalgic factor in there somewhere. |

09.03.15 | Never understood the vinyl hype anway, at least for the price. CD's are a good compromise between cost, audio quality and collectability, but I usually take them only out once for a proper rip on my PC. After that they don't see the light very often anymore. For the rest Bandcamp, Qobuz, etc. are a great alternative. |

09.03.15 | I got myself a decent cd player for 5$ over the summer (gotta love garage sales) and I've got it hooked up to my receiver and speakers along with my TT so I actually prefer listening to cd's as opposed to mp3's off my computer/iPod. There difference may not be big but there is a difference in quality even though most of my mp3s are 320kbps |

Tbh it's not so much a sound quality thing as a collection/aesthetics thing. Having the giant sized artwork, access to all sorts of limited pressings (although some bands/labels are kind of ruining this aspect by overdoing it to shit for cash), the sentiment of being closer to the music (if that makes sense) since you have to take better care of vinyl/be around to flip the record/keep your needle in good condition and also I love hunting down vintage copies of my favourite classic prog and rock albums |
BeyondCosby
09.03.15 | At some point I'll spend the money on a decent Vinyl set up but for now I just gotta make do with my CD collection. My girlfriend thinks I'm nuts for spending a little extra on CDs but I love having them and keeping them in good condition. |
Cyberduck
09.03.15 | I sure understand the aesthetic aspect for vinyl. Just seems like a lot of money spent that could be used to buy more other music, although it's a different story for those who just have enough to spend obviously. Quality differences between mp3's and CD's are marginal at best btw. I used to "believe" that lossless formats (wav, flac) sound better too, until I started to do some blind listening tests which demonstrated I can't tell apart lossy encodings like e.g. 96 kb/s AAC from the original for the most part. |
SCREAM!
09.03.15 | If you buy nothing but new vinyl sure but when you get a lot of your stuff used it isn't so bad (you just have to be careful about the condition).
I might try that. Like I said, I feel there is a slight difference in overall clarity between my 320mp3s and my cds but maybe it's all imagined, what do I know. |
Thibs
09.03.15 | is 7 good? |
SCREAM!
09.03.15 | Well I bought it so I would say so haha
If you weren't a fan of their debut I doubt it'll convert you though |

09.03.15 | i do CDs only. want to make the switch to vinyl in the near future though. prob xmas |
Sinternet
09.03.15 | My main problem with vinyl is the cost, so unless it's an album I enjoy a lot I won't get it. However I can pick CD's up pretty cheap secondhand and on Amazon so it's just a lot easier.

Flugmorph
09.03.15 | just do this test and you will know mp3 is a pretty dandy invetion (unless you have high end quality headphones probably)

09.03.15 | Yeah, I pretty much concur with BeyondCosby. I don't know when I'm going to seriously make the transition into vinyl, but whenever it happens I'm going to be so broke... |
MeatSalad
09.03.15 | Who needs a test when i can compare my folder of ancient shit quality 93-128 kbps mp3s downloaded from limewire to my recent cd rips in flac |
Flugmorph
09.03.15 | how can you rip flac files |
MeatSalad
09.03.15 | Magic foobar shit |
SCREAM!
09.03.15 | @flugmorph that was interesting, guess the difference isn't as noticeable as I imagined. Did the test with headphones and I got 320 or uncompressed for all but 1. So I guess I can't really hear the difference like I thought I could |
Cyberduck
09.03.15 | You can also do your own tests with the ABX plugin in Foobar if you have the lossless files.

09.03.15 | i wish i could afford to start collecting vinyl, it seems so fun

09.03.15 | Found 1-3 used at a local record store so I'm definitely gonna start paying closer attention to their selection in the future. Never expected to find DsO without having to order it online |

09.04.15 | Nice buys dude, the packaging and art for the new leviathan is fucking awesome |
SCREAM!
09.04.15 | @Moose agreed. Some of those art cards would make sick posters. Also 4 is really interesting as its the first CD I've seen that has a black playing side rather than the usual mirror/silver
@tresm ehh both have their pros/cons |
Ocean of Noise
09.04.15 | cd's have always been better than vinyl tbh [2] |
Anthracks
09.04.15 | I buy a few CDs every week because I have no auxiliary port in my car and a thirty minute commute to work daily. |
SCREAM!
09.04.15 | @soccer Eh it doesn't bother me if the person listens to mostly top 40 kind of stuff as that stuff revolves around singles and the artists put most of their effort into those few songs that'll get them radio play.
When I meet someone who listens to bands like Tool and only downloads the singles I'll admit that kind of annoys me |
SCREAM!
09.04.15 | When my iPod broke a while back I was damn happy to have a solid CD collection I could use in the car and not have to rely on the *shudders* radio |
Sevengill
09.04.15 | Crossdressers are cool, yeah. Good choice. |
YetAnotherBrick
09.04.15 | I buy CDs all the time and vinyl when I can. They're both great, but I prefer listening to vinyl. Can't play vinyl in your car tho |
Sevengill
09.04.15 | Vinyl is cool too. Mostly because giant artwork. Gets you in the mood for the album. |
