07.10.08 | I realize that narrowing the category down to twenty is ridiculous. You would need the Top Two Hundred to be fair to the genre. So, I just gave a sampling of some great, progressive albums which also happen to have garnered a high level of respect. Plenty of other titles from the same artists belong on this list, along with titles from several other artists which are not represented.

07.10.08 | fails for having no Camel. 10, 15 doesnt belong here. | The Flabbit Rides High
07.10.08 | If you like Renaissance, well good on you! | Shrapnel94
07.10.08 | 3, 6, 7, 13, 14 ftw | moltenlava
07.10.08 | Yeah, there should be a Camel, a Mirage or a Snow Goose. 10 is Sabbath's nod to the genre. Listen to the tracks and tell me it's unworthy of mention. Most of what's on 15 is highly progressive. Renaissance is great. Especially the album listed, 'Turn of the Cards' too. Curved Air is another great example of female-led Prog.

07.10.08 | When I think Prog Rock, I definitely think of Metallica. | jrowa001
07.10.08 | i only said they dont belong here because you made a "prog rock" list. Metallica are far from being a prog rock band. but props though for 1,3,5,6,8,9,11,13,14,16,19,19. check out Paatos for good female prog rock.
but for Camel its all about Moonmadness. Mirage is close second though. | Masochist
07.10.08 | I'm going to take a wild guess and say that P&P was being sarcastic...
I'm going to go out and say that King Crimson should be number one. And I'm sad to see no Dream Theater...I daresay they're a bit more progressive than Metallica or Black Sabbath. Also, do Emerson, Lake & Palmer get no love?
Still...this is a nice list. | moltenlava

See, but that's the thing. The bad, bad thing. We should be examining each effort for what that specific thing is - a specific snapshot in time of one band. And, during the "...And Justice For All" recording sessions, Metallica was a Progressive Rock band. No doubt about it. Just listen to the changes the pieces go through. And, it makes no difference what overall picture we have of these bands. One doesn't have to be regarded as a Prog-Rock band to make a progressive-leaning album. 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' and 'Blues For Allah' are two albums where Sabbath and The Grateful Dead acted as Prog-Rock bands. They saw something going on and wanted to indulge it for a little bit. Does it mean that they, overall, should be regarded as such? Not at all, mate.

07.10.08 | Needs moar Opeth
Also Metallica ≠ prog rock. Changes in a band's sound do not make them prog | moltenlava
07.11.08 | I just explained it above. Metallica was a Progressive band in 1988. That one specific year, all year, they were a Prog band. I also gave three more examples of this on the list. Quadrophenia, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Blues For Allah. Progressive albums from bands that aren't from the genre. And, when I say progressive, the term is relative. When the Grateful Dead does material like what's on the first side of 'BFA' or the second side of 'Terrapin', that's really progressive stuff 'relative' to the music they usually make, which is usually more like CSN&Y. So, it's progressive - for them. But, say, compared to a Yes recording from the 70's, then not so progressive. Relative to a 'Mahavishnu Orchestra' recording? Then not really progressive at all.

07.11.08 | lol Blues For Allah is definitely not Progressive, Fusion maybe, but not Progressive. | SHOOTME
07.11.08 | 15 had prog influences, but itself wasn't prog. Maybe Prog Thrash, but not pure prog rock. Other than that, swell list. | ilikemusicthatsucks
