07.21.15 | When this idea was first studied it was thought that their were only two planetary requirements. Water and atmosphere. The think was then, out of the estimated billions of planets, there must be another planet with life similar to ours. Over time the planetary requirements list grew and grew now with over 100 criteria. Many of them are obscure things that we don't even think about like Jupiter shielding the inner planets of our solar system from astroids because of its strong gravitational pull. Some scientists now approximate the chances of there being another planet with carbon based life as very low. |

06.19.19 | For the record I agree with chuck... 'it would be a miracle if we made contact, not a paradox that we haven't'
I believe 'they' probably do exist, some sort of life-form/entity anyway, not necessarily carbon-based, or anything the human mind could necessarily imagine. Whether we find these life-forms or not is another matter, and just because we haven't (or may not, ever) doesn't mean shit. |

DoofDoof
06.19.19 | Other life exists in the universe right now as we type no doubt, but by alien life I guess we're excluding the most simple forms of life?
I think aliens have or will exist but not necessarily at the same time as humans. Humans have been around a couple of hundred thousand years and realistically we might be around from anything between a hundred and another few thousand you'd think.
That's a really small amount of time in terms of the universe. Considering complex life would appear to be very rare from our understanding we may not overlap with anything you'd call an alien. |
Gyromania
06.19.19 | Door's got it. Plus, if it did exist far outside of our view of the universe, it would likely be impossible for us to ever come in contact. |
Gyromania
06.19.19 | Surprised to see someone mention Bootes Void in this discussion. Definitely one of the strangest things we've observed in the universe. Seems terrifying that there'd be do much empty space. |

rockandmetaljunkie
06.19.19 | I think alien life does exist somewhere in the universe, but not in the form that we imagine, but in the form of bacteria, etc
The chances of an anthropomorphic life form (Hollywood aliens) are very slim as there are thousands of criteria that need to be fulfilled, for such a planet to exist and house such a life form (even if it is just bacteria). And keep in mind we're not 100% sure that the laws of physics apply outside our solar system. So there is no way to be completely sure of anything.
Most scientists insist that it was a miracle how life came to be on our little blue planet.
And personally, I share that opinion. |
Gyromania
06.19.19 | Lol Hawks Astronomy isn't rocket science. That's a part of how we get places and obviously none of us can do the math to build a fucking rocket but that's irrelevant to the discussion. Based on what we know of the universe even the lowliest simpleton could make some inferences about the universe. Based on how far we can currently see, if life existed beyond it we could assert with near certainty that it'd be impossible to make contact |
DoofDoof
06.19.19 | dunno, the more they find out about the Earth and other solar systems the more this planet seems like a one in a few billion deal :/

not necessarily when you factor the lifespan of the universe into it too - and the fact that for intelligent life humans have been perhaps very fortunate not to have been destroyed or destroyed ourselves yet. We might be the lucky exception on that front too.
Less intelligent life (like our dinosaurs) is maybe more likely than stuff as intelligent as humans. |

Dimorphic
06.19.19 | I used to be certain that the Universe would be teeming with intelligent life, e.g. dozens of intelligent civilisations per galaxy. But considering how many ridiculously complex conditions have to be met for life to be sustainable on a planet, combined with the relative youth of the Universe (13.7 billion years, when it will still exist in trillions of years), I'm getting more and more convinced that we may be one of the first civilisations to have got to this point.
But yeah, I still lean towards the idea that we're absolutely not alone out there and there may even be some Godlike civilisations out there already. If random combinations of matter coincidentally organised themselves into single-celled organisms after 1 billion years on Earth, why should it be impossible for it to happen after 1 million years on another planet? It's basically just like solving a Rubik's cube in 2 minutes compared to solving it in 10 seconds, just by chance.
Fuckin' love space and shit. |
rockandmetaljunkie
06.19.19 | all the degrees in the whole world will never be enough to persuade me that there's one universal truth about anything
I never said that Darwin was wrong with his theories, I myself have read and believed some of them as well. But I would be a closed minded person if I chose to believe that's the only answer to this topic.
Remember, people used to believe that earth was the center of the universe some 500-700 years ago, only because some scholars and scientists told them to. |

06.19.19 | The only instance (that I'm aware of) of our understanding of physics not applying in the universe are in regards to black holes. The Bootes Void is another one that seems to stump scientists, as it seems physically impossible that there'd be such a massive space of nothing |
Gyromania
06.19.19 | Chuck did you say you have a master's degree in 'science'? That seems pretty vague lmao. Can't tell if you were joking. Science is pretty all-encompassing |
SitarHero
06.19.19 | "The only instance (that I'm aware of) of our understanding of physics not applying in the universe are in regards to black holes."
Also not true. As the recent image of the M87 indicated, we already had a pretty decent idea of how a black hole functions, even though we obviously don't have all the answers.
As for the Bootes Void, it's more like a gap in our knowledge of cosmic events and phenomena rather than a gap in our knowledge of physics. |

The real problem when it comes to the development of intelligent life is the series of ridiculous cosmic coincidences that have to be in place to allow any species to actually survive long enough to get to that point.
We have a great atmosphere, yes, but that's nothing without the fact that the moon is precisely where it is, the Sun is precisely within the certain range it needs to be for liquid water, Jupiter protects us from incoming comets etc. So many crazy conditions and we got lucky with them all. If even one of them wasn't met on another world, that particular species that was destined for intelligence could die out and there would only be fish in the oceans, if even that. |

Philosophy: "The rational investigation of questions about existence and knowledge and ethics". Keywords being rational investigation, i.e. human investigation using rational logic. Are you literally trying to say that the human investigation of why mathematical laws are the way they are actually trumps the reality of WHAT the mathematical laws which were determined almost instantly after the Big Bang are? Seriously, dude, come on. Sure, all science did start off as a branch of philosophy. Nobody is claiming otherwise. But that's completely irrelevant considering the SCIENCE CAME FIRST. |

06.20.19 | quasi-hate myself for reading all of these comments. um so science can sometimes be philosophical. there were many theoretical physics postulates built on aspects of einstein's theories that were later disproven. obviously axioms are axioms, but part of science is asking the right questions and you can sometimes ask the wrong question and net a fruitful result which is then apocryphally attributed as being causal. again, not saying science is on equal footing as philosophy but rather that sometimes philosophy makes it's way into science. um but yea i believe in aliens fasho |

Egarran, there is difference between anger and frustration. Trying to keep these guys focused on a single point is like watching a retard try to fuck a doornob. Also, I would argue against the fact that emotion undermines an emotionless subject such as mathematics.
SitarHero, you literally need to just address the actual point I was making which was that the mathematical / scientific laws of the universe are not DETERMINED BY philosophy. I know you can't do that, and so do you, so you argue with me about what science is even though that was not the topic of conversation. Just read back through the comments. There are only a handful, it will take you 30 seconds. Do that and you'll see how transparent your approach is. |
Dimorphic
06.20.19 | Keep in mind that the thing you're continually insulting me over is the fact that I am saying that the physical, mathematical laws that govern the Universe existed before human's rational investigation of those mathematical laws. That was my point, simple and plain. You are arguing against that. Come on, dude. You may not like me, and you may feel a need to side with your friends, but you need to act like the rational being you're championing. |
Egarran
06.20.19 | I think my peeve is that people will use any excuse to get angry at each other.
There is so much vanity and angry pride here. Even when speculating about aliens! "Ur theories tell me ur dumb af and don't get the basics of science lol"

06.20.19 | Dimorphic, literally no one has argued, at any point, that philosophy predates the physical and mathematical laws that govern the Universe. The argument was always that SCIENCE, which is the STUDY of said physical and mathematical laws, is a branch of philosophy. This all began when I called you out for your limited conception of philosophy as the "interpretation of human morality".
But I see where the confusion stems from. "Sure, all science did start off as a branch of philosophy. Nobody is claiming otherwise. But that's completely irrelevant considering the SCIENCE CAME FIRST."
Looks like you don't actually know what the word "science" means. Either that or your reading comprehension is at a 3rd grade level. Either way, that down's syndrome "joke" you dropped earlier is not ageing well buddy. |

06.20.19 | Intelligent life capable of communication through space most likely does not exist on other planets. Assuming a 5 billion year old universe, and we have the capability to reach out to space for only 100 years of that 5 billion years, that means we've been 'intelligent enough' to do so for only 10000/5000000000 = 0.000002% of the lifespan of the universe. That small time has to overlap with another intelligent society, which means it's extremely unlikely we exist simultaneously with another 'alien' species |

06.21.19 | modern science did not really take form until like the 13th century. science before this point is just basically straight up philosophy (in the sense that it lacked rigorous experimentation and operationalism). even if you somehow tried to classify someone like Hippocrates as a scientist, Socrates predated him. but i think Fish's argument has merit. i suppose you could call science the philosophy of determining something's representation based on its function / material composition / operation. and i think we are beginning to see in some of the more advanced forms of science, like quantum physics, a point where we are so thrown off by how these subatomic particles function, insofar as they seem to have a will of their own, that we are basically having to loop traditional 'philosophy' back into the landscape, given it's sheer immeasurability. i guess it's really just all semantics here though. |

06.21.19 | The scientific method is an empirical method of acquiring knowledge that has characterized the development of science since at least the 17th century. It involves careful observation, applying rigorous skepticism about what is observed, given that cognitive assumptions can distort how one interprets the observation. It involves formulating hypotheses, via induction, based on such observations; experimental and measurement-based testing of deductions drawn from the hypotheses; and refinement (or elimination) of the hypotheses based on the experimental findings. These are principles of the scientific method, as distinguished from a definitive series of steps applicable to all scientific enterprises.[1][2][3] |

Don't mistake me, bisphenols in plastics, along with other chemicals absorbed through the environment, and the inundation of hormones in meat against the body, which I regard as a silent war on humankind, especially men, has caused testosterone and by extension sperm count to fall among men while estrogen has risen. Chuck takes refuge in the gym and in his muscles to retain his connection to his manhood but if thinking objectively, will realize that society's chemical onslaught has infected him as it's affected everybody. |

You have no interest in getting married or having a child, which is the lifeblood of the future, indeed we have no future without little children to raise up after us, and you seem to prefer a freewheeling lifestyle which isn't characteristically any different from that of a 15 year old when his parents are not home. You fear a climate catastrophe, which no one has any power to prevent or delay yet seem to believe daddy government will be able to step in and intercede to the climate gods for us, but only by taking massive amounts of wealth and redistributing it to the very top. The latter shows you're in no condition for self-rule but are actually quite content with the government gradually taking over the reins of your life. In short, you have been made the victim of the estrogenization of society, the chemical onslaught through our air, water, and food supply which is a systematic decimation of mankind by blurring the genders, making men more alike to women and women more alike to men, which in concert with fluoridation makes you easy pickings for a tyrannical government to rule over like sheep or vassals.
You lack a number of the essential characteristics of manhood as understood for centuries and millennia, and you retreat into a world where safe masculinities can be constructed that are not at all resistant in affirming your manhood. Real life is not like that. Manhood isn't how much you benchpress or how long you can hold your breath under water or dunk a ball or any of the other silly diversions which society has supplied to us to justify this consumer culture which is a diversion. It's a waste of your energy and you as much as anybody, probably more than anybody at this entire forum have fallen prey to it. And the solution is easier for you to pick up than anything else yet you don't. |

>>> ex-muslim: As far as islam goes, science is cools unless anything you declare or decide contradicts the quran or the prophet's teachings. |

06.24.19 | Hey there, Delilah
What's it like in New York city?
I'm a thousand miles away
But, girl, tonight you look so pretty
Yes, you do
Times Square can't shine as bright as you
I swear, it's true
Hey there, Delilah
Don't you worry about the distance
I'm right there if you get lonely
Give this song another listen
Close your eyes
Listen to my voice, it's my disguise
I'm by your side
Oh, it's what you do to me
Oh, it's what you do to me
Oh, it's what you do to me
Oh, it's what you do to me
What you do to me
Hey there, Delilah
I know times are gettin' hard
But just believe me, girl
Someday I'll pay the bills with this guitar
We'll have it good
We'll have the life we knew we would
My word is good
Hey there, Delilah
I've got so much left to say
If every simple song I wrote to you
Would take your breath away
I'd write it all
Even more in love with me you'd fall
We'd have it all
Oh, it's what you do to me
Oh, it's what you do to me
Oh, it's what you do to me
Oh, it's what you do to me
A thousand miles seems pretty far
But they've got planes and trains and cars
I'd walk to you if I had no other way
Our friends would all make fun of us
And we'd just laugh along because we'd know
That none of them have felt this way
Delilah, I can promise you
That by the time that we get through
The world will never ever be the same
And you're to blame
Hey there, Delilah
You be good, and don't you miss me
Two more years and you'll be done with school
And I'll be makin' history like I do
You know it's all because of you
We can do whatever we want to
Hey there, Delilah, here's to you
This one's for you
Oh, it's what you do to me
Oh, it's what you do to me
Oh, it's what you do to me
Oh, it's what you do to me
What you do to me, oh oh, woah, woah
Oh woah, oh
Oh |

06.24.19 | Yeah nigga
I'm still fucking with ya
Still waters run deep
Still Snoop Dogg and D-R-E, '99 nigga
Guess who's back
Still doing that shit huh Dre?
(Oh for sho', check me out)
It's still Dre Day nigga, AK nigga
Though I've grown a lot, can't keep it home a lot
'Cause when I frequent the spots that I'm known to rock
You hear the bass from the truck when I'm on the block
Ladies they pay homage, but haters say Dre fell off
How nigga? my last album was The Chronic (Nigga)
They want to know if he still got it
They say rap's changed
They wanna know how I feel about it
(If you ain't up on thangs)
Dr. Dre is the name
I'm ahead of my game
Still puffing my leafs
Still fuck with the beats, still not loving police
Still rock my khakis with a cuff and a crease
Still got love for the streets, reppin' 213 (For life)
Still the beats bang, still doing my thang
Since I left ain't too much changed, still
I'm representing for them gangstas all across the world
Still hitting them corners in them lo-lo's, girl
(Still taking my time to perfect the beat
And I still got love for the streets, it's the D-R-E)
I'm representing for them gangstas all across the world
Still hitting them corners in them lo-lo's, girl
(Still taking my time to perfect the beat
And I still got love for the streets, it's the D-R-E)
Since the last time you heard from me I lost some friends
Well, hell, me and Snoop, we dippin' again
Kept my ear to the streets, signed Eminem
He's triple platinum, doing 50 a week
Still, I stay close to the heat
And even when I was close to defeat, I rose to my feet
My life's like a soundtrack I wrote to the beat
Treat rap like Cali weed, I smoke 'til I sleep
Wake up in the A.M., compose a beat
I bring the fire til you're soaking in your seat
It's not a fluke, it's been tried, I'm the truth
Since Turn Out the Lights from the World Class Wreckin Cru
I'm still at it, after-mathematics
In the home of drive-bys and ak-matics
Swap meets, sticky green, and bad traffic
I dip through then I get skin, D-R-E
I'm representing for them gangstas all across the world
Still hitting them corners in them lo-lo's, girl
(Still taking my time to perfect the beat
And I still got love for the streets, it's the D-R-E) |
