1Hive Destruction
Hive Destruction

STREAM/BUY: hivedestruction.bandcamp.com/album/hive-destruction

Mostly instrumental stuff that riffs like there's no fucking tomorrow.

Key track: "Through the Dark, Brown Deserts" (riffs to the infinity)
2Rosetta
Quintessential Ephemera

STREAM/NAME-YOUR-PRICE: theanaesthete.bandcamp.com/album/quintessential-ephemera

This is the logical follow-up to ADoM that The Anaesthete should have been. It's good to have them back.

Key track: "Untitled VII"
3Izah
Sistere

STREAM/BUY: izahband.bandcamp.com/album/sistere

Nothing particularly innovative, but this album is (very) long-form post-metal done very well. The title track is spectacular.

Key track: "Sistere"
4CROWN
Natron

PARTIAL STREAM/BUY: candlelightrecordsuk.bandcamp.com/album/natron

An odd, awesome mix of pummeling, super duper drop-tuned sludge metal, industrial, ambient, and (occasionally) black metal. It also drum machines pretty hard.

Key track: "Serpents," "Wings Beating over Heaven"
5The Nepalese Temple Ball
Arbor

NAME-YOUR-PRICE DOWNLOAD: thenepalesetempleball.bandcamp.com/

One of the most unexpectedly spectacular albums I've heard all year, and one of the few on this list to which I've given a 4.5. Blends sludge metal, progressive metal, psychedelic, and stoner doom (with a bit of mathy stuff). Their bassist is fantastic. Highly recommended.

Key track: idk, they're all really good. it's a free download, so there's no reason not to try it out, I guess.
6Earthmass
Collapse

[sputnik is being dumb about this one's artwork] STREAM/BUY: earthmassband.co.uk/album/collapse-download

Hypnotic (seriously, though, I can zone out to this band's music for hours), atmospheric sludge with some definite stoner influences.

Key track: "Loom (i.Drowse ii.Barren)"
7Spook the Horses
Rainmaker

STREAM/BUY: spookthehorses.bandcamp.com/

Post-metal with some pretty diverse influences (ambient, indie, post-rock,shoegaze, etc.). Love me some Kiwi jams.

Key track: "Below Our Time"
8Three Steps to the Ocean
Migration Light

NAME-YOUR-PRICE DOWNLOAD: threestepstotheocean.bandcamp.com/

Largely instrumental, dark, atmospheric post-metal. Its dark, grandiose atmosphere brings to mind Year of No Light at times, albeit with more post-rock and less doom metal.
9Tangled Thoughts of Leaving
Yield to Despair

STREAM/BUY: music.tangledthoughtsofleaving.com/album/yield-to-despair

PSA: This is unequivocally one of the best albums of the year (if it weren't for Sufjan Stevens it'd be my AotY right now). I cannot understate this. If I were to describe it, I'd call it a mix of post-metal, post-rock, noise rock, math rock, and jazz. Just trust me when I say that you need this in your life.

Key track: all of them (the title track is really good, I guess)
10Toundra
IV

STREAM: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADI-joZusQI

Heavy instrumental post-rock. Fast, energetic, and technically proficient.

Key track: "Viesca"
11Kalpa (GR)
Sequences*

NAME-YOUR-PRICE DOWNLOAD: kalpaband.bandcamp.com/

Pretty standard instrumental Cult of Luna/Isis worship, but it's done extremely well. It maintains a really compelling, dark, oppressive energy throughout its entire length, and it's got good production, a great drummer, and some fantastic, crushing riffs. It also doesn't overstay its welcome, which is always nice.

Key track: "Waves Will Rise over Babylon"
12Phantom Winter
CVLT

STREAM/BUY: goldenantennarecords.bandcamp.com/album/cvlt

It's basically Omega Massif 2.0 plus vocals, and since Omega Massif are (were...) objectively fantastic, it follows that Phantom Winter must also rule face. Extremely dark, heavy, apocalyptic sludge. Think a really heavy Pelican with some seriously pummeling Amenra-esque atmospheres and a better drummer.

Key track: "Avalanche Cities"
13Tempel
The Moon Lit Our Path

STREAM/BUY: tempelofficial.bandcamp.com/album/the-moon-lit-our-path

I haven't spent a ton of time with this yet, but it's shaping up to be something really memorable. A super-compelling, instrumental amalgam of sludge metal, black metal, death metal, and progressive metal.

Key tracks: not sure yet
14A Swarm of the Sun
The Rifts

STREAM/BUY: aswarmofthesun.bandcamp.com/

Spacey, foreboding post-metal/post-rock with really effective use of clean vocals, some pretty tasteful synthesizer and piano flourishes, and constant, driving percussion. Really memorable atmospheres here.

Ket track: "These Depths Were Always Meant for Both of Us"
15Yanos
Omega

STREAM: momentofcollapserecords.bandcamp.com/album/omega

Cult of Luna/Amenra worship (you might notice a pattern here), but very well-executed. Heavy and dynamic, and it switches really effectively between a darker, Time to Burn-esque vibe and a more epic, cathartic atmosphere.

Key track: "I. Anger"
16Callisto
Secret Youth

STREAM/BUY: callistochaos.bandcamp.com/album/secret-youth

This is the album that Providence should have been (yeah, I stole that from someone else's soundoff). A very effective blend of post-metal, alternative, and progressive rock. Neat lyrics.

Key track: "Dam's Lair Road"
17Irreversible
Irreversible

NAME-YOUR-PRICE DOWNLOAD: irreversible.bandcamp.com/

Irreversible have been getting better with each album for the past few years, and their self-titled does not break this trend. An eclectic mix of post, stoner, sludge, and hardcore that really succeeds at seamlessly integrating these influences where some of their earlier stuff felt a lot more cluttered. Too bad it's supposedly their final album.

Key track: "Fade"
18Minsk
The Crash and the Draw

STREAM/BUY: minskband.bandcamp.com/album/the-crash-and-the-draw

It's not on the same level as The Ritual Fires..., but it's still a fantastic comeback for some genre veterans with a pretty unique sound.

Key track: "The Way Is Through"
19Red Apollo
Altruist

STREAM/BUY: redapollo.bandcamp.com/album/altruist

A well-executed blend of post-metal, sludge, and post-hardcore with pretty heavy Time to Burn vibes. Since Time to Burn are awesome, this is a good thing.

Key track: "Remnants of a Blazing Sun"
20Tesa
G H O S T

STREAM/BUY: tesa.bandcamp.com/album/g-h-o-s-t

Kinda like if This Will Destroy You (self-titled era) went post-metal.

Keybtrack: "T"
