| dank 2015 post-metal
No particular order. Streams and purchase options are provided if available, as are legal name-your-price downloads. | 1 | | Hive Destruction Hive Destruction
STREAM/BUY: hivedestruction.bandcamp.com/album/hive-destruction
Mostly instrumental stuff that riffs like there's no fucking tomorrow.
Key track: "Through the Dark, Brown Deserts" (riffs to the infinity) | 2 | | Rosetta Quintessential Ephemera
STREAM/NAME-YOUR-PRICE: theanaesthete.bandcamp.com/album/quintessential-ephemera
This is the logical follow-up to ADoM that The Anaesthete should have been. It's good to have them back.
Key track: "Untitled VII" | 3 | | Izah Sistere
STREAM/BUY: izahband.bandcamp.com/album/sistere
Nothing particularly innovative, but this album is (very) long-form post-metal done very well. The title track is spectacular.
Key track: "Sistere" | 4 | | CROWN Natron
PARTIAL STREAM/BUY: candlelightrecordsuk.bandcamp.com/album/natron
An odd, awesome mix of pummeling, super duper drop-tuned sludge metal, industrial, ambient, and (occasionally) black metal. It also drum machines pretty hard.
Key track: "Serpents," "Wings Beating over Heaven" | 5 | | The Nepalese Temple Ball Arbor
NAME-YOUR-PRICE DOWNLOAD: thenepalesetempleball.bandcamp.com/
One of the most unexpectedly spectacular albums I've heard all year, and one of the few on this list to which I've given a 4.5. Blends sludge metal, progressive metal, psychedelic, and stoner doom (with a bit of mathy stuff). Their bassist is fantastic. Highly recommended.
Key track: idk, they're all really good. it's a free download, so there's no reason not to try it out, I guess. | 6 | | Earthmass Collapse
[sputnik is being dumb about this one's artwork] STREAM/BUY: earthmassband.co.uk/album/collapse-download
Hypnotic (seriously, though, I can zone out to this band's music for hours), atmospheric sludge with some definite stoner influences.
Key track: "Loom (i.Drowse ii.Barren)" | 7 | | Spook the Horses Rainmaker
STREAM/BUY: spookthehorses.bandcamp.com/
Post-metal with some pretty diverse influences (ambient, indie, post-rock,shoegaze, etc.). Love me some Kiwi jams.
Key track: "Below Our Time" | 8 | | Three Steps to the Ocean Migration Light
NAME-YOUR-PRICE DOWNLOAD: threestepstotheocean.bandcamp.com/
Largely instrumental, dark, atmospheric post-metal. Its dark, grandiose atmosphere brings to mind Year of No Light at times, albeit with more post-rock and less doom metal. | 9 | | Tangled Thoughts of Leaving Yield to Despair
STREAM/BUY: music.tangledthoughtsofleaving.com/album/yield-to-despair
PSA: This is unequivocally one of the best albums of the year (if it weren't for Sufjan Stevens it'd be my AotY right now). I cannot understate this. If I were to describe it, I'd call it a mix of post-metal, post-rock, noise rock, math rock, and jazz. Just trust me when I say that you need this in your life.
Key track: all of them (the title track is really good, I guess) | 10 | | Toundra IV
STREAM: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADI-joZusQI
Heavy instrumental post-rock. Fast, energetic, and technically proficient.
Key track: "Viesca" | 11 | | Kalpa (GR) Sequences*
NAME-YOUR-PRICE DOWNLOAD: kalpaband.bandcamp.com/
Pretty standard instrumental Cult of Luna/Isis worship, but it's done extremely well. It maintains a really compelling, dark, oppressive energy throughout its entire length, and it's got good production, a great drummer, and some fantastic, crushing riffs. It also doesn't overstay its welcome, which is always nice.
Key track: "Waves Will Rise over Babylon" | 12 | | Phantom Winter CVLT
STREAM/BUY: goldenantennarecords.bandcamp.com/album/cvlt
It's basically Omega Massif 2.0 plus vocals, and since Omega Massif are (were...) objectively fantastic, it follows that Phantom Winter must also rule face. Extremely dark, heavy, apocalyptic sludge. Think a really heavy Pelican with some seriously pummeling Amenra-esque atmospheres and a better drummer.
Key track: "Avalanche Cities" | 13 | | Tempel The Moon Lit Our Path
STREAM/BUY: tempelofficial.bandcamp.com/album/the-moon-lit-our-path
I haven't spent a ton of time with this yet, but it's shaping up to be something really memorable. A super-compelling, instrumental amalgam of sludge metal, black metal, death metal, and progressive metal.
Key tracks: not sure yet | 14 | | A Swarm of the Sun The Rifts
STREAM/BUY: aswarmofthesun.bandcamp.com/
Spacey, foreboding post-metal/post-rock with really effective use of clean vocals, some pretty tasteful synthesizer and piano flourishes, and constant, driving percussion. Really memorable atmospheres here.
Ket track: "These Depths Were Always Meant for Both of Us" | 15 | | Yanos Omega
STREAM: momentofcollapserecords.bandcamp.com/album/omega
Cult of Luna/Amenra worship (you might notice a pattern here), but very well-executed. Heavy and dynamic, and it switches really effectively between a darker, Time to Burn-esque vibe and a more epic, cathartic atmosphere.
Key track: "I. Anger" | 16 | | Callisto Secret Youth
STREAM/BUY: callistochaos.bandcamp.com/album/secret-youth
This is the album that Providence should have been (yeah, I stole that from someone else's soundoff). A very effective blend of post-metal, alternative, and progressive rock. Neat lyrics.
Key track: "Dam's Lair Road" | 17 | | Irreversible Irreversible
NAME-YOUR-PRICE DOWNLOAD: irreversible.bandcamp.com/
Irreversible have been getting better with each album for the past few years, and their self-titled does not break this trend. An eclectic mix of post, stoner, sludge, and hardcore that really succeeds at seamlessly integrating these influences where some of their earlier stuff felt a lot more cluttered. Too bad it's supposedly their final album.
Key track: "Fade" | 18 | | Minsk The Crash and the Draw
STREAM/BUY: minskband.bandcamp.com/album/the-crash-and-the-draw
It's not on the same level as The Ritual Fires..., but it's still a fantastic comeback for some genre veterans with a pretty unique sound.
Key track: "The Way Is Through" | 19 | | Red Apollo Altruist
STREAM/BUY: redapollo.bandcamp.com/album/altruist
A well-executed blend of post-metal, sludge, and post-hardcore with pretty heavy Time to Burn vibes. Since Time to Burn are awesome, this is a good thing.
Key track: "Remnants of a Blazing Sun" | 20 | | Tesa G H O S T
STREAM/BUY: tesa.bandcamp.com/album/g-h-o-s-t
Kinda like if This Will Destroy You (self-titled era) went post-metal.
Keybtrack: "T" | |

06.24.15 | If y'all were to get on any of these, my favorite are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 9 (although everything on here is at least a high 3.5/5 and is worth checking out). 5 and 9 are 4.5s for me, and 2 might become one with time.
For the sake of convenience, here are the readily-accessible name-your-price downloads that y'all have no excuse not to check out because free music:
17: irreversible.bandcamp.com/
11: kalpaband.bandcamp.com/
8: threestepstotheocean.bandcamp.com/
5: thenepalesetempleball.bandcamp.com/
2: theanaesthete.bandcamp.com/album/quintessential-ephemera | Ignimbrite
06.24.15 | Seriously though, I can't overstate how fucking awesome 5 and 9 are. I mean, I really liked everything here, but those are both top 10 material for the year, and 9 is fighting with Sufjan Stevens for #1. | Artuma
06.24.15 | nah relinquished is the undoubted post-metal authority here but this list is fantastic, i'll give a listen to some of the albums here i haven't heard | Ignimbrite
06.24.15 | idk whether PE refers to physical education, power electronic, premature ejaculation, or Pineapple Express
I'm assuming it's Pineapple Express | Ignimbrite
06.24.15 | "nah relinquished is the undoubted post-metal authority here but this list is fantastic, i'll give a listen to some of the albums here i haven't heard"
Thanks! Hope you enjoy something here.
And don't worry, I would never claim to hold Wolfe's throne. I learned how to post-metal in thrall of the 'quished. | Ignimbrite
06.24.15 | "You serious???"
idk man, it's late here and I've been staring into an SEM all day so things that should be obvious to me may or may not be obscured at the moment | Ignimbrite
06.24.15 | Haha, it certainly does. | Jasdevi087
06.24.15 | admittedly, 3 gets a little less spectacular in between shots of Isis and Cult of Luna, but I still dig it | Ignimbrite
06.24.15 | Yeah, I'll give you that. It could've probably had 20 minutes trimmed to no ill effect. | emester
06.24.15 | Personally havent really been impressed at all by 13. 5 looks cool af tho | Archelirion
06.24.15 | This list is now permanently in my tabs for the next 3 weeks then. So interested in 5. | Relinquished
06.24.15 | a lot of the bands here that I didn't think much of before got better now, but not all got me really excited. 1, 4, 5, 16, 17, 18 are real good. the rest didn't grab me or need more time with. | Thibs
06.24.15 | will check 5 and 9. Abstracter from this year was pre good too | wacknizzle
06.24.15 | Sweet list, I've heard most of these. Gotta check 5 doe | RogueNine
06.24.15 | YES I was waiting for this list. Definitely will be coming back. | Relinquished

06.24.15 | Some of the inclusions on that list make no sense, but damn son, props for the Supercontinent inclusion. | Relinquished
06.24.15 | exactly what I thought | Psynuts
06.24.15 | 7,10,16,17 are really good, I haven't listened to the others enough but at first glance they seemed unexciting, to almost plain boring. Dont get me wrong though, they all sound good, but not a lot of them stick. | Ignimbrite
06.24.15 | A few of them are pretty "standard" post-metal that probably won't really stick if you aren't about that kind of thing (which I am), so it'd make sense that not everything would be your jam. However, I'd definitely give stuff like 1, 4, 5, 9, and 14 a shot: they're still firmly under the post-metal umbrella, but they're very well-executed and they all have sufficiently distinct sounds to separate them from the more typical genre fare. | Psynuts
06.24.15 | Pots metal is a genre that I need to be in the mood for to really enjoy it and it seems that I contracted some kind of post metal fatigue, which is kinda sad cause it's a genre that can truly engross me. But I will definately check those out. | Ignimbrite
06.25.15 | I feel you on that fatigue thing
Also, I forgot: the new Vattnet Viskar is fucking fantastic. It's a perfect mix of black metal and post-metal. | h0rsie
06.27.15 | Sweet list! Totally forgot about earthmass, loved Lunar Dawn (Keep, Relic & Ritual) |
