06.01.15 | So I agree that labeling something as Christian Rock or whatev is kind of pointless at times because it doesn't say anything about the music's genre, just the subject. But that's the thing, some people only want to listen to the Jebuz Jamz so I guess that's why they do it... |

06.01.15 | Christian rock is a genre so that christian people never have to hear anything deviating from The One And Only Truth. For convenience's sake. |

06.01.15 | Yeah, I agree with Flag. There's a difference between Christian inspired music and music about Christianity |

06.01.15 | it's as dumb as the term viking metal, plus it pushes people away. i didn't think mewithoutyou were gonna be as good as they were just because of that |

06.01.15 | Yeah... I regularly listen to worship music but more often than not its full of cliches and a lack of creativity. John Mark McMillan is decent though.
the bands i listed have pretty exceptional lyrics with Christian themes. like most music, you just have to dig a little to find the good stuff. |
Gameofmetal
06.01.15 | I guess there's a market for it which validates its existence but this argument is a bit of an old and done one if you ask me. People used to argue about it a lot back in the day. |

06.01.15 | I guess as long as there are people, who actually think believing in that nonsensical stuff isn't pretty damn stupid, then there will be people, who want their music with some religion in it. Hence the labelling. |
JWT155
06.01.15 | Pretty sure it's a thing because many Christian conservatives don't believe in consuming secular music/entertainment, so they insist on labeling everything that's Christian proofed for them and their families. |
Watchman97
06.01.15 | I agree the tag is to appeal to those who are searching. Seems like a gimmicky marketing ploy, and really annoys me.

06.01.15 | While there are certain secular things i avoid, i think its stupid to disregard artists who have different beliefs. I dont want to be sheltered and ignorant; it only makes me learn more and challenges me when i come across something i disagree with |

06.01.15 | Christians - just like followers of any other faith - try to find ways to express their gratitude and love for what they believe. The concept of worship through music is not an uncommon one : why is this even a question? I don't even like worship music because I prefer something subtler and/or with more elaborate depth, but I totally get the concept of Christian music's existence. Some use it as a gimmick, but most are just expressing their faith. |

06.01.15 | Christian labeling is done more by the Christian consumer than it is by the artist. |
Watchman97
06.01.15 | Yes Sowing, i totally understand worship music. Did you read that interview that i linked to? |
KrazyKris
06.01.15 | Well, how is any other labelling not for marketing reasons though?
If a guy presents himself as the though, new gangsta rapper or a band tries to fit into the garage rock label or some other shit, there's no real difference. It's all for the image and ultimately for the sales. |
JWT155
06.01.15 | @sowing - I agree to a certain extent. Gospel music and such have been around for a very long time. On the other hand, there's plenty of modern music that can be considered secular if not for the artists confession of faith and being tossed in as a Christian band. Most Christian metal bands would fit that category in my opinion. I think by labeling certain bands "Christian" dilutes their message to a preset mindset. |
JWT155
06.01.15 | @KrazyKris - I think you're on to something. Bands label themselves to set expectations to their fans on what content and music their music contains. A gansta rapper is going to drop cuss bombs and insults while trying to have some tight production. I think the problem some bands have with being labeled as Christians is that it dilutes their potential expression as a band when people belittle them as nothing more then Jesus worshipers with acoustic/electric guitars.
This isn't just for Christian music, artists in general hate being pigeonholed to genre because it almost disallows innovation and creativity and sets false expectations for the future. |

06.01.15 | All of those bands fit into various scenes and styles and are identified foremost and post hxc or hip-hop etc. No one is calling them Christian bands as a style or genre. The only artists that get labelled primarily as Christian are ones who produce such musically empty work that the only way to classify it is by the lyrics. |

Supercoolguy64
06.01.15 | And when I say, “exposed for what it is,” I basically mean a industry based off of personal and financial gain, [which] exploits God and religious beliefs, and capitalizes off of it, while trying to convince itself that’s it’s alright to do that when the Bible seems to pretty strongly suggest the opposite.

Personal vendetta, much? I mean, it's one thing to despise the idea of any religion (i.e. being an atheist) but to spread hatred of one specific group is no better than saying something like "anyone who loves football is retarded." Also, if we're being politically correct, retarded isn't a term to throw around either. |

06.01.15 | My only input here is that the Tim Lambesis trial was a pretty big deal to me since he was kind of my idol for a few years. I talked to some people who knew him and took vocal lessons from him at a Christian festival I went to a few years back and everyone loved him, it's crazy how much of a lying sociopath he was.
Anyway, I used to be Christian so it was a big deal to me that the music I listened to was Christian.... but now I think it's a pretty useless signifier, especially for the lot of bands that are ambiguously Christian.
In my old band we had a few talks about whether we'd ever want to play that Christian music festival since a few of us were Christian and we most likely could. Even though a few of us were Christian and we all grew up with that festival and loved it, I would have felt like the biggest hack in the world playing that shit. Especially because since then I've fallen in love with dropping f bombs sporadically in my lyrics. |
wwf
06.01.15 | Oh just to be clear, it was the people I knew who took vocal lessons from him, not me. The English language is so dumb |
altertide0
06.01.15 | @Supercoolguy64 The Bible also advises to stone people who work "on a holy day" to death. So I'm actually glad people don't take it seriously.

06.01.15 | "Especially because since then I've fallen in love with dropping f bombs sporadically in my lyrics."
Even if Jesus really was that guy that walked on water and rose from the death, I still think he wouldn't have lived his life without cussing. Probably not the f-bomb, since English wasn't exactly en vogue back then, but still. |

and then I remembered I've actually seen them before.... so yeah, that's what I think of Red. |
