| The Blackest Metal Tourney Winner
It's done. It's over. We have a victor. | 1 | | Svartidaudi Flesh Cathedral
Svartidaudi
Flesh Cathedral
(SCREAM!) Easily my favourite of the Icelandic trio (of which only Misthyrming really seems to have gained any attention on here). Flesh Cathedral features four intricate pieces that start where DsO left off and add their own sense of dark melody and absolutely hellish vocals. Stream here: https://daemonworship.bandcamp.com/album/flesh-cathedral | 2 | | Sabbat (JPN) The Dwelling
(Valkyrion) First wave style album that fuses everything from classic thrash to early black, doom and some acoustics in a hour-long single song that covers more ground than most black metal bands even dream to cover in their entire careers Stream : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5Nbf7_gx0U | 3 | | Csejthe Reminiscence
(Choccy) A fun and brief record that provides stimulating production, particularly with how the vocals are mixed, and concept that's not often found in BM. Stream: http://records.eisenton.de/album/r-miniscence | 4 | | Zuriaake Afterimage of Autumn
(hal1ax) Gorgeous and dreary atmospheric black metal from China. This band uniquely and seamlessly incorporates traditional oriental styles of music into this depressive surrealistic wonderland of an album. Stream: https://pestproductions.bandcamp.com/album/afterimage-of-autumn | 5 | | Threnos By Blood and By Earth
(Emester) Was pretty much the very starting point of the Cascadian Black Metal sound. Stream: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLawwo_EFSpyLBE8WvwxjXJpXh0ee1JvlK | 6 | | Drawn A New World?
(Hawks) Psychedelic/experimental bm from Norway. Similar to early In the Woods... and Solefald. Not a typical bm album, but has elements of pure bm along with a lot of clean sections. Includes clean and harsh vocals throughout. Stream: https://drawn-no.bandcamp.com/album/a-new-world | 7 | | Revenge (CAN) Victory.Intolerance.Mastery
(oltnabrick) Barbaric war/black metal from a band that knows no limits. Very loud and awesome. I like it a lot.
Stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJeb-26_1EU | 8 | | Utstott Hjorungavagr
(Gameofmetal) Epic black metal in the vein of the mighty Summoning and Caladan Brood. The execution doesn't really put much of a unique spin on the style by the aforementioned bands, but it's still filled with epic crescendos and ambitious lyrical themes. The nordic/viking theme has been done to death, but does it really ever get old anyway? There's plenty of hypnotic tremolos and epic melodies to please any fan of epic black metal. Stream: https://utstott.bandcamp.com/ | 9 | | Flames of Hell Fire And Steel
(OvDeath) Seminal first wave black metal from Iceland that sounds like Hellhammer if they continued their own sound before Celtic Frost. Unique and amazing vocals, some of the best riffs in the genre, and a wonderful lo-fi crackle permeates the recording. Stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGHSHUj3IsU | 10 | | Addaura ...And The Lamps Expire
(YakNips) cause it has a killer atmosphere with sick drumming where the ride is like like ch chchch chch and the vocals are like ahhhHhhhHHHHHH its fucking great. Stream : https://addaura.bandcamp.com/album/and-the-lamps-expire | 11 | | Black Cilice Summoning The Night
(MoosechriS) as its raw and noisy as fuck and as atmospheric as they come. Stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcxwrea0pp4 | 12 | | Dornenreich Her Von Welken Nächten
(porcupinetheater) Opener Eigenwach enters with sinister whispering and slowly adds strings and chimes, only to explode in pummeling riffs a few seconds later, balanced out once more by the reintroduction of orchestral strings. But symphonic black metal this is not. Dornenreich eventually dove head first into folk black metal (and pure folk), but this album melds myriad influences into something bleak and desperate. It is an album that straddles the line between black metal's main two points of departure - evil, and mournful, to the point that the two sensations seem to pull against one another - resulting in an album of refreshing uniqueness. Stream: https://dornenreich.bandcamp.com/album/her-von-welken-n-chten | 13 | | Irrwisch Irrwisch
(Hyperion1001) Mournful atmospheric black metal from the Netherlands with an organic production job and great vocals. Nothing groundbreaking but a perfect example of what it is. If you're looking for something to sate you while Drudkh keeps putting out terrible albums, this might help. In the words of Riffoclock, "nothing original but it gets the job done. somber but not gimmicky, and melodic without getting too cheesy". That's high praise. Stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDc2sZzJvWE | 14 | | Grimoire À La Lumière des Cendres
(yourgodisinferior) À La Lumière des Cendres is an album that will immerse you in it's atmospheric aesthetics. It displays aggression but only in the context of beauty and to contrast their dreamy soundscapes. I would hesitate to label it "blackgaze". It is an atmospheric black metal album with significant post metal overtones. Stream : https://grimoire.bandcamp.com/album/la-lumi-re-des-cendres | 15 | | Infernal War Terrorfront
(SpiritCrusher2) raw, brutal black/death album featuring intense blast beats, hateful, venomous vocals and whirlwind riffing. Stream:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7e9s7zHffrI | 16 | | Troll Drep de Kristne
(linguist2011) A brilliant, bouncy black metal album with subtle ambient/keyboard-led interludes and which also reminds me of early Finntroll. The transition from ambiance/symphonic parts to black metal-inspired sounds are in my opinion seamless, and the whole thing is just a fun experience. SCREAM!
05.28.15 | Finals ended 8-5
Way to disappear on the final round guys smh | MoosechriS
05.28.15 | Really enjoyed the whole thing, the final could have went either way for me. Some awesome albums discovered through the competition too | Gameofmetal
05.28.15 | Sick. I enjoyed pretty much everything in the tournament too so that's a plus
what genre next is the question we should be asking doe....... | SCREAM!
05.28.15 | You can do any genre you want
I'm taking a break haha | Gameofmetal
05.28.15 | Im sure we all need a break yeah
death or doom would be my vote for the next one whenever someone decides to do one | Balerion
05.28.15 | 2nd vote for death whoever decides to set it up. Maybe I can create a list tonight after work and accept pms from users suggesting albums. If i did decide to do it however, it would obviously exclude the classics and very well known albums | Valkyrion
05.28.15 | Well-deserved victory for svartivaudi. Many disappointments in this tourney for me but I enjoyed a couple of these greatly (sabbat, zuuriake, threnos, drawn, black cilice and revenge), some not as much (csejthe, addaura, dornenreich, irrwisch) and some not much at all (flames of hell, troll, utstott, grimoire). Regardless it was fun to participate.
I agree about waiting some time before starting another tournament or it'd just end like the VOTE lists of the past weeks.
EDIT: Don't do death metal, there's about 100 DM lists for non-beginners on the site. Doom or any non-metal genre would be much appreciated | beefshoes
05.28.15 | Can't wait to check these out. I haven't heard any of these albums before. | puntugruhm
05.28.15 | i second doom as long as black sabbath isn't on the list. | SharkTooth
05.28.15 | Maybe doom or another prog list would be nice | Valkyrion
05.28.15 | @puntugruhm
Black sabbath wouldn't be eligible for these tourneys since the suggested bands need to be somewhat underrated | SCREAM!
05.28.15 | Yeah you have to impose a rating limit on the nominees for these to really be worthwhile
| hal1ax
05.29.15 | a prog tourney would be fucking rad. I wouldn't have any bands to nominate, as my prog metal knowledge is pretty minuscule, but it would be fun getting to discover new prog bands. Doom would be interesting as well. This tourney was pretty damn awesome, all-in-all. It definitely expanded my BM horizons. | SCREAM!
05.29.15 | Prog tourneys have already been done twice Although they were pretty cool. Look up user Friday13th, he organized those ones | ChoccyPhilly
05.30.15 | It's been a pleasure, folks | SharkTooth
