05.11.15 | Yep! I know Coltrane identified as a Christian, but he certainly was interested in other cultures and religions, India's likely being one that influenced his lifestyle in that way. |
Torontonian
05.11.15 | Ya. not the biggest fan of organized religion either but if it helped create a lot of Coltrane's work it certainly isn't all bad! |
Snowdog808
05.11.15 | Yeah, certainly Coltrane's experience with religion was positive, for once, on him because of how it convinced him to abandon heroin and dedicate himself to music. |
SharkTooth
05.11.15 | Hinduism is not a very organized religion to begin with tho |

05.11.15 | Vegetarians m/
Been jamming Coltrane hella lot lately, didn't know he was vege. Props for that, and making some of the best music ever
Yeah and organized religions suck almost always |
Torontonian
05.11.15 | @shark was talking more about Christianity. Im not aware of any monstrosities caused by Hinduism tbh |
Friday13th
05.11.15 | Not aware of any hospitals built by Hindus either.
The caste system is pretty atrocious. |

05.11.15 | Radical Islam is pretty whack as of late. I just want to challenge you guys if you haven't thought of all the undisputed good done not just in correlation but because of religion. I know hospitals, orphanages, and colleges were all started by Christians not coincidentally but because they followed the teachings of Jesus to heal the sick, care for orphans and widows, serve each other etc. I hear the atheist rhetoric that religions have only done harm at college all the time and it just amazes me that no one questions who built Harvard and Yale and all these places where these ideas are coming from.
Oh and Mahavishnu rules [2] |
Snowdog808
05.11.15 | Well of course Friday. A lot of Christians are inspired by their beliefs to help those in need. There are/were pretty much Christians ranging from neurosurgeons up to corrupt monarchs. Even the worst among those accepting the term Christian in even the Dark Ages are nowhere near as dangerous as the leaders and militants of the Middle East. I clearly can't deny the massive positive feeling it can provide either, as I was there before 16, and it helped me through mental issues. Obviously Coltrane needed an experience like that much more considering how hooked he was to hard substances. I'd hate to think of what the jazz world would look like without Coltrane's work after his rededication. |
Friday13th
05.11.15 | Cool, just wanted to bring it up. Yeah Coltrane was such a boss and drugs definitely weren't helping. Well let's see how jazz would look like...there would definitely be no Kamasi Washington :] |
Torontonian
05.11.15 | @friday you're definetly not wrong, and sorry if it sounded like i was trying to bash religion, as it certainly has its perks. If its used as an inspiration for benevolence and not a method to spread hate/dissimilarity then its all good in my book. :]
"Yeah, but Abrahamic monotheisms, particularly the youngest one, do the most notable ones these days." can't argue with that either |
Friday13th
05.11.15 | No insult taken, Torontonian. Same here! |
