My Top 10 Frank Zappa Albums

Personal preference, obviously, but these are the Zappa albums that I think are the best!
10Frank Zappa
Bongo Fury

Am I cheating by putting a live album in the list? Maybe. I don't care, because I love the craziness of this album from the very beginning of Debra Kadabra. Captain Beefheart at his finest as well. Plus this album features what may be my personal favourite Zappa song.

Favourite Track: Muffin Man
9The Mothers of Invention
We're Only in It for the Money

Some of you might think this is a little low on the list, and I can definitely understand why you would think that, since this might be the best satire album ever. However, I didn't get to listen to this until very recently, and so it doesn't hold the same place in my heart as the others. Who knows, this could rocket to number 1 for me one day.

Favourite Track: Let's Make The Water Turn Black
8The Mothers of Invention
Freak Out!

The start of it all, Freak Out!'s title is really deceptive in any way. This album is a total musical freak out, and I wouldn't want it any other way. Plus, Trouble Every Day is still relevant today, and the song is nearly 50 years old.

Favourite Track: Hungry Freaks, Daddy
7Frank Zappa
Sheik Yerbouti

This album might be a little bit more pop-friendly in some ways, but this is pure Zappa, and also probably Zappa at his funniest. I can still barely contain my laughter for I Have Been In You and Bobby Brown Goes Down.

Favourite Track: Dancin' Fool
6Frank Zappa
Joe's Garage

This list would be incomplete with Zappa's famous rock opera. When I was a kid, my dad got me to read the liner notes and lyrics so I understood the story and why it was funny. My dad was awesome, and I have him to thank for my appreciation of this album, and Zappa's music in general!

Favourite Track: Watermelon In Easter Hay
5The Mothers of Invention
Over-nite Sensation

To be honest, even if the rest of the album sucked, this would be in the list solely because of how great Montana is. Luckily, the rest of the album delivers as well. Also, I'm The Slime might be the coolest damn song ever. Starting a song with a solo like that is insane.

Favourite Track: Montana
4The Mothers of Invention
One Size Fits All

From the first moments of Inca Roads, you know you're in for a treat with this album. If it weren't for number 1 on my list, I'd find it very hard to argue that this isn't Zappa's best work from the 1970s, because every song on here is immensely enjoyable.

Favourite Track: San Ber'dino
3The Mothers of Invention
Absolutely Free

This album is nuts right from the very start, but there's just something so endearing about it. The first half tells an interesting story about vegetables, whilst the second half takes us to a strange new place with a lot of great, strange songs, not least of which one of Zappa's early classics, Brown Shoes Don't Make It.

Favourite Track: Call Any Vegetable
2Frank Zappa
Hot Rats

Zappa's first post-Mothers album delivered in a big way, with a mostly instrumental jazz-fusion album that has some of the most interesting instrumentation in all of Zappa's discography.

Favourite Track: Peaches En Regalia
1Frank Zappa
Apostrophe

I simply can not fault this album, everything Zappa does here, he does well. The lyrics are zany and hilarious, the instrumentals are crisp, and the songs are just fun to listen to. From the story of Nanook in the first 4 tracks, all the way to Stink-Foot, this album delivers an incredibly rewarding listen.

Favourite Track: Cosmik Debris
