2013: Top 10 Songs from the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End Chart

Another year, another rundown. Let's go back and remember some of the best Hot 100 tracks from 2013. Lots of rubbish broke into the top 10, such as "Blurred Lines" and "Cruise", but there were some really excellent songs that cracked onto the list as well. Some honourable mentions include: "Counting Stars" by OneRepublic, "Clarity" by Zedd, "SAIL!" by AWOLNATION, "I Love It" by Icona Pop & Charli XCX, "Same Love" by Macklemore, Ryan Lewis & Mary Lambert, "Summertime Sadness" by Lana Del Rey & Cedric Gervais, "Gone, Gone, Gone" by Philip Philips, "The Fox" by Ylvis, "Next to Me" by Emeli Sande, "Runnin' Outta Moonlight" by Randy Houser and "Still Into You" by Paramore.
10Kendrick Lamar
good kid, m.A.A.d city

#79: "Swimming Pools (Drank)" - This is one of the best rap songs of the decade so far. Easily. A moody, almost otherworldly vibe is maintained throughout this superb dissection of the party life: "some people like the way it feels, some people wanna kill their sorrows / some people wanna fit in with the popular, that was my problem". What's outstanding about the track is how, initially, it seems like an ordinary party song about drinking too much, but the lyrics continuously get more in-depth; eventually having Kendrick breakdown and contemplate with his own conscience during the song's second verse. The production at hand, provided by Dr. Dre and T-Minus, is impeccable, getting better-and-better with each replay ("changin' by the minute / and the record on repeat").
9Eminem
The Marshall Mathers LP 2

#67: "Berzerk" - Berzerk is exactly what this song is. When I first heard this single, I thought it was an absolute mess and, while it most certainly is, it's the best kind of mess all-around. The beats and samples used here, from Beastie Boys and Bill Squier, are amazingly well-crafted, giving this song a scrambled-up radio-station feel throughout. While this is one of the weaker songs on the album, "Rap God" follows it and is quite easily the stand-out of the singles, Eminem is brimming with hysterical cockiness on "Berzerk". One of the many hilarious moments is when he mentions "the ugly Kardashian" and soon makes an apology: "Lamar, oh sorry, yo, we done both set the bar low". A mind-numbing, but thoroughly entertaining track from Eminem.
8Wale
The Gifted

#59: "Bad" (feat. Tiara Thomas) - Definitely a tough song to pin down and talk about. Simply put, it's a surprisingly soulful track based around a woman who can't stay loyal and a man who must come to terms with it. This is a fantastic rap song from 2013. The hook by Tiara Thomas is great, but Wale's first verse is absolutely stunning in the way he suddenly pops back into the picture: "let's get it / bad girls ain't no good, and the good girls ain't no fun / and the hood girls want a smart n!%#@ / college girls all want a thug, so it seems we fiend what we don't need". In a year burdened by mindless rap tracks (such as "Holy Grail", "Started from the Bottom", "Bugatti", "I'm Different", among many others), "Bad" stands out as a refreshingly thoughtful song.
7fun.
Some Nights

#58: "Some Nights" - I kind of hate this band, and I really didn't enjoy their album, to which this is the title track, but I'd be damned if I didn't say that this song made me appreciate them a bit more. While "We Are Young" immediately repulsed me with how it painted the lead singer as an abusive jerk-off ("my lover she is waiting for me just across the bar / my seat's been taken by some sunglasses asking about a scar and / I know I gave it to you months ago / I know you're trying to forget / but between the drinks and subtle things, the holes in my apologies / you know, I'm trying hard to take it back") backed up by an "empowering" chorus that drones on-and-on-and-on; to put it bluntly, "We Are Young" sucks. So hearing "Some Nights" on the radio genuinely surprised me, I loved the song, it was everything that I thought "We Are Young" should have been, but wasn't.
6J. Cole
Born Sinner

#48: "Power Trip" (feat. Miguel) - Much like "Swimming Pools", this is a rap song that immediately sets up a bleak atmosphere. It's genuinely chilling throughout, with the lines "got me up all night" repeated over-and-over again to express J. Cole's paranoia over both a woman and writing the next great love song respectively. This may not be a classic love song for the ages (by any means), but it sure was a hit, and for good reason too, as the track rides the line between obsession and romance in a bold, yet simplistic way. While J. Cole should definitely take more daring risks in the future (in order to spice up his music), he certainly proves on this track, and his Born Sinner album, that he's one of the better rappers out there today. "Power Trip" is a fascinating experience.
5ASAP Rocky
Long. Live. A$AP

#41: "F#@$!n' Problems" (feat. Drake, 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar) - Far from fascinating comes a song about loving "bad b!#@%&$ (that's my f#@$!n' problem)". And yeah, the song is very low-brow, and exactly what you expect it to be, but that's exactly what makes it so much fun in the long run. It's so hilariously blunt and up-front that it ends up being a truly entertaining rap track, especially thanks to the guest verses by Drake and Kendrick Lamar. While Lamar's "finale" makes for an excellent verse, Drake undeniably steals the show here. He radiates with confidence on this track; the part where he pauses mid-rapping and says "okay, I got it" is really fun, but his velocity on the rest of the verse is fantastic. This song truly is a "beast".
4Bruno Mars
Unorthodox Jukebox

#30: "Treasure" - Such a charming song. This was the song that sold me completely on Bruno Mars, my jaw literally dropped to the floor when I heard this song (especially after learning who it was by). Up till that point, Mars released "Grenade" and "The Lazy Song". Both of those songs are dreadful and uninspired. But "Treasure"... whoa. Of all the songs on the chart, besides the next one and "Swimming Pools (Drank)", this is the only song that captivates me enough to make me wanna go back and listen to it again-and-again. This is a marvellous track from Bruno Mars, but, if you want to listen to a song that sounds exactly like this (which came before it), check out "Baby I'm Yours" by Breakbot (feat. Irfane). Pretty much the exact same song, it's just as charming as this is.
3Daft Punk
Random Access Memories

#14: "Get Lucky" (feat. Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers) - With all of this talk of charming, how could I possibly forget what may be the best hit single of 2013? This song can easily be marked down as one of the finest comeback songs of all-time. While I kind of hated Pharrell Williams overly simplistic single "Happy" from the previous year, "Get Lucky" still more than makes up for it. He's simply amazing on this track, oozing with charisma throughout. Yet another consistently entertaining masterpiece from what is arguably the greatest electronic/pop group of all-time.
2Justin Timberlake
The 20/20 Experience

#6: "Mirrors" - Colour me surprised. I was never the biggest fan of JT, but this song immediately sold me on him as a vocalist. The chorus alone never fails to bring a smile to my face, this is just a wonderful song about that woman that you can't deny your undying love for. There literally isn't much left to say about this song that hasn't already been said. It is simply a phenomenal love song that always captives due to Justin's emotional vocal performance and Timbaland's mesmerizing production. "You are / you are / the love of my love".
1Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
The Heist

#5: "Can't Hold Us" (feat. Ray Dalton) - A true underdog story. One of the finest albums released back during late 2012, making humongous waves by the end of 2013. First of all, Ray Dalton is stunning on the hook here, but Macklemore... my God, he is absolutely awe-inspiring on this song. With explosive delivery and razor-sharp quickness utilized throughout, this is quite easily the most energizing track of 2013. A truly incredible song from an equally incredible duo and record respectively. "Thrift Shop" was great too, but, admittedly, the hook by Wanz was easily the best part; thankfully that song beat "Blurred Lines" to the #1 spot though, and that is f@#$!ng awesome.
