Friday13th
12.31.14 | Voting ends Saturday. Both are on Spotify and segments are on youtube I think. |
SCREAM!
12.31.14 | Somehow I knew this round was next! Gave both of these a listen last night but I'll give them another go or two before I vote |
JJKeys
12.31.14 | OH BOY HERE WE GO
And I've been swamped recently so I haven't had time to vote in M4. I'll give White Arms of Athena a listen, but I'm pretty sure you can guess who my vote'll go to |
SCREAM!
12.31.14 | Anubis was great instrumentally but the vocalist was kind of a miss for me, we'll see if that changes with more listens.
White Arms of Athena was definitely less original but still had some solid songs for the most part and a lot more energy. |
Friday13th
12.31.14 | The length of Byzantium is a bit daunting...I think I'll jam the metalcore first ;] |
JJKeys
12.31.14 | Huh, funny - I find that the vocals from WAoA are grating from the sounds of the first track |
Mad.
12.31.14 | Lol i love that description
Anubis is on bandcamp: https://anubismusic.bandcamp.com/album/hitchhiking-to-byzantium
I've just gotta say this
PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT: ANUBIS GROWS it doesn't seem that good at first, it started off as a 3.3 for me but the more you listen, the more you understand it's subtleties like solos, lyrics, song structures etc and now it's a 5.0 |
JJKeys
12.31.14 | Ditto at that
And lel, the best part of WAoA so far is the instrumental part at the beginning of This Transition. I'm really not liking to vocalist |
Friday13th
12.31.14 | sounds like every hardcore "clean" singer ever |
JJKeys
12.31.14 | Do not want. If there's an instrumental version of WAoA, I'll happily take it; the instrumentation is neat, and I love the ambiance, but the vocalist in this is really poor IMO (he sounds flat half the time). I've finished my first listen of it, and it's only about a 3 for me at the moment. I'll give it a few more spins just to be a good sport. but it's never going to beat Hitchhiking.
My vote goes to Hitchhiking to Byzantium |
manosg
12.31.14 | Modern prog is not my thing but Mad. raving about 2 has made me a bit curious. Let's see how that goes... |
Friday13th
12.31.14 | Digging that "Welcome to the Machine" synth on track 2 of Byzantium |
SCREAM!
12.31.14 | Well see Mad. There were a few moments were I found the album kind of ploddy and like I said the vocals were mostly a miss but I'll try and give it another two listens before I vote (hopefully I can find the time with it being so long :p)
The vocals for WAoA weren't anything to write home about either but I prefer that style over what I heard in Anubis |
OwMySnauze
12.31.14 | Haven't heard Anubis yet so this will be interesting. I'll try not to be biased ha!
The vox for WAOA are something to get used to. They won't be for everyone but what makes this album is the instrumentation. |
Friday13th
12.31.14 | Not gonna lie, sometimes Byzantium does sound like alt rock for criminals lol |
MeatSalad
12.31.14 | Ugh |
Lord(e)Po)))ts

12.31.14 | I could have just copy and pasted Potsy's entire rant, but I still have some professionalism left in me lol |
TwigTW
12.31.14 | Glad you added Anubis Mad. I listened to it a couple of times when it was released and meant to get back to it, but you know how that goes . . . Sounds good coming back to it now. You're right; it's a grower. |
Mad.
12.31.14 | Glad some people are being open-minded |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.31.14 | Both albums are decent overall, but nothing special tbh |
menawati

"professionalism"

MrSirLordGentleman
12.31.14 | I think I'll go with Anubis, not really interested in any of the two albums, I don't think I'll listen to them more than the 2 times I've already did |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.31.14 | any of the two |

Screw it - I knew we should've put up A Tower of Silence instead of Hitchhiking. I'll go jam that now |
SharkTooth
01.01.15 | "Well if Anubis isn't real prog and 70's Yes isn't real prog, then I don't know what the fuck is"
all the answers will come when you jam Fuzzy Duck |
Friday13th
01.01.15 | lol Fuzzy Duck has the best album art in prog along with Love Beach |
MrSirLordGentleman
01.01.15 | Why jam Fuzzy Duck when there's Uriah Heep? |
SharkTooth
01.01.15 | Cuz Uriah Heep's not elite enough |
MrSirLordGentleman
01.01.15 | David Byron's the most elite singer ever |
Friday13th
01.01.15 | gotta be leeeeeet like White Arms of Athena |
SharkTooth
01.01.15 | exactly, there's a Uriah Heep album with 165 votes obv that band's too mainstream |
SharkTooth
01.01.15 | Smh MrSirLordGentleman, I expected better from you |
Friday13th
01.01.15 | For the record, I take full responsibility for making you guys jam WAoA. My fears were definitely realized. Makes it all interesting, right? :D Anubis is pretty good though and doesn't deserve the hate. |
SharkTooth
01.01.15 | All isn't lost if we manage to get OwMySnauze to jam real prog |
Friday13th
01.01.15 | Exactly...it's only 30 some minutes of your lives right. It's the price we pay to save a soul from faux prog hell XD |

01.01.15 | yes this band blaspheming Anubis's name is troubling indeed |
Friday13th
01.01.15 | Alright, let's try to finish this sucker formally. My vote goes to Anubis cause it's pretty good Floydish modern prog. 2-5 right now |
TwigTW

MrSirLordGentleman
01.02.15 | Friday, there has to be a Hard Rock contest |
MeatSalad
01.02.15 | Probably gonna skip out on this round, trying to catch up on time spent away from family and dont have time to listen to 2 albums i know i wont enjoy anyway, no offense |
Friday13th
01.02.15 | I would like to do a classic heavy metal/hard rock one at some point. |
Friday13th
01.02.15 | @MeatSalad try to catch up next week when you have time. |
MeatSalad
01.02.15 | Yeah no worries I'll be back, still looking forward to the next few discovery rounds here |
Onirium
01.02.15 | This kind of contest is probably adaptable for many genres. A hard rock one would be great; so would a folk
or jazz/fusion one for me.
As for my vote, it goes to Anubis without a doubt. I don't know if I could say I really digged it, but it
definitely has strong melodies, and some interesting atmospheres and ideas. Jamming 1 was very painful
anyway. |
Jethro42
01.02.15 | I cannot see how 2 could be a grower (as Mad said it to be), it's rather an instant delight to my ear. Really a great neo-prog album with lots of treasures hidden in the mix. I have yet to listen to 1. Haven't heard a single note out of it yet. Also, 100th comment. |
manosg
01.02.15 | "I would like to do a classic heavy metal/hard rock one at some point."
That would be awesome, if/when you have the time. |
JJKeys
01.02.15 | >I cannot see how 2 could be a grower
D:it's rather an instant delight to my ear
:DDDDDDDDDD |
Jethro42
01.02.15 | ;) |
Jethro42
01.02.15 | Anubis with no hesitation. WAoA is truly painful. |
SCREAM!
01.02.15 | I definitely don't find WAoA painful haha the instrumentation is solid even if the vocals are pretty lackluster
Overall I also have to give it to Anubis though. The vocals are growing on me and the music is generally better written even if it does drag a little in parts |
Friday13th
01.02.15 | 2-9 seals it basically |
Friday13th
01.02.15 | Hey Jethro, I just bought Double Dimple on vinyl for $3! |
Jethro42
01.02.15 | Enjoy! Might sound better than on youtube :D
And try to get Spartacus, it's a helluva great album too. |
Friday13th
01.02.15 | I'll check it out. I also found the original SEBTP CD so I'm feeling pretty good today :D |
Jethro42
01.02.15 | You know what you like :D |
Friday13th
01.02.15 | ...and I like what I know! hehe |
manosg
01.03.15 | My vote goes to 2 but I really forced myself listening to both albums. Not gonna rate them for the time being cause I'll be unfair. |
Mad.
01.03.15 | Gonna have to go for 2, I'd see why someone might like 1 though
White Arms is pretty good tbh |
Friday13th
01.03.15 | 2-11 and Anubis wins! Next one coming up. |
