| iamamanfromspace's Best of 2014
My favourite albums of 2014, as of the end of the year itself. | | 1 | | This Will Destroy You Another Language
Likely the best combination of modern post-rock and ambient music you're going to find for a good while, and my personal favourite album of the year (though perhaps tying with 2).
Favourite tracks: Serpent Mound, Memory Loss, God's Teeth | | 2 | | Cymbals Eat Guitars LOSE
An ambitious, sprawling rock and roll epic that is already a fantastic listen without really knowing the context of the lyrics, but is all the more incredible if you do.
Favourite tracks: Jackson, Place Names, Laramie | | 3 | | Run the Jewels Run the Jewels 2
Yes Killer Mike and El-P go hard on this release, and the beats are insane, but what's really the icing on the cake here is the subtle social awareness, which probably shines through best on the a little more obvious Love Again (Akinyele Back).
Favourite tracks: Oh My Darling Don't Cry, All Due Respect (Feat. Travis Barker), Love Again (Akinyele Back) (Feat. Gangsta Boo) | | 4 | | Yoko Kanno Zankyou no Terror Original Soundtrack
For all the amazing music that graced Cowboy Bebop, this would have to be my favourite overall soundtrack album by Yoko Kanno. Almost all the best and most emotionally stirring tracks from ZnT are here on soundtrack #1, and the standout tracks really do bring you back to particular moments from the show and what they made you feel at the time. Even for a soundtrack by Kanno, this album is a shockingly good release.
Favourite tracks: walt, birden (feat. Arnor Dan), seele | | 5 | | Epik High Shoebox
Still being on the same label that helped them to produce the abysmal '99', just about no one could have expected popular Korean hip hop group Epik High to come back so strong with this album. Though more input from Mithra Jin and DJ Tukutz might have been welcome, the music and the lyrics here are both incredibly on point. Even if the sins of 99 can't be wiped away completely, Shoebox is certainly a good enough repentance for me.
Favourite Tracks: Burj Khalifa (Feat. Yankie & Gaeko), Born Hater (Feat. Beenzino, Verbal Jint, B.I, Mino & Bobby), Lesson 5 (Timeline) | | 6 | | Jakob Sines
The new Jakob album was always going to be good, but talk of strings rightfully made some a little wary. How would that work with Jakob being one of the heaviest successful post-rock bands out there? Fortunately strings are used sparingly and tastefully on this album, more adding to the aesthetic of certain tracks than taking away from the classic 'Jakob' sound. Sines is a brilliant record and absolutely worthy of Jakob's already outstanding discography.
Favourite tracks: Blind Them with Science, Resolve, Sines | | 7 | | Freddie Gibbs and Madlib Pinata
On Pinata, Freddie Gibbs' particular style of gangsta rap and Madlib's meticulous production go together more perfectly than you could have ever possibly expected, even if you were expecting brilliance. Whatever you think you're going to get going into this project, it's even better.
Favourite tracks: High (Feat. Danny Brown), Thuggin', Robes (Feat. Earl Sweatshirt & Vince Staples) | | 8 | | Cloud Nothings Here and Nowhere Else
Sounding less poppy but as catchy as ever before, Cloud Nothings return with their best album so far - even if Wasted Days is still their best song.
Favourite tracks: Psychic Trauma, Giving into Seeing, I'm Not Part of Me | | 9 | | Spoon They Want My Soul
I still haven't heard anything else from Spoon yet, but They Want My Soul was one of those albums that definitely clicked with me on the very first listen, and hasn't unclicked even slightly since. Outstandingly solid indie rock music.
Favourite tracks: Inside Out, Do You, Let Me Be Mine | | 10 | | The Antlers Familiars
Everything this band does has at least a slightly different feel to what they did before, but it's always some of the best indie rock out there, and Familiars is definitely no exception.
Favourite tracks: Palace, Doppelganger, Refuge | |
