Friday13th
12.22.14 | Fripper made the bold claim that SWTWC is the third best prog album of the 1980s, and TWIG forgot his wasn't from the '70s! Voting ends Thursday at noon. |
menawati
12.22.14 | "third best prog album of the 1980s"
well, there's not much competition is there |
Friday13th
12.22.14 | Rush tho. Am I the only nerd who still likes them? :D |
menawati
12.22.14 | not proper prog |
Friday13th
12.22.14 | gotta stay leet right |
menawati
12.22.14 | ha only kidding |
Friday13th
12.22.14 | hehe I know. I heard 2 this morning and loved it. The Enid is gonna have to be as good as Fripper says. |
manosg
12.22.14 | Nice. I was really looking forward to checking some Enid so this comes at the right time. |
SharkTooth
12.22.14 | listening to 1 right now, sounds awesome so far |
Friday13th
12.22.14 | yeah just finished it and it's great. 2 edges it right now, but I'm gonna jam both again before I decide. |
Jethro42
12.22.14 | Asia Minor is so original. Masterpiece. A Camel kind of thing here and there cos of the flutes probably. I want this with me. |
Friday13th
12.22.14 | I know right. It's that infinitely jammable length between 30-40 minutes too |
SharkTooth
12.22.14 | Then There Were None has a really cool drum beat in it |
Friday13th
12.22.14 | yeah it's got a nice thick sound. Usually that's an insult to 80s bands, but it works well for The Enid. |
SharkTooth
12.22.14 | honestly this is the first time I've heard 80's synths used to an effect that hasn't aged badly, and I've heard a lot of 80's synth music |
Friday13th
12.22.14 | TWIG!!! Loving it, dude. That ending track on Between Flesh and Divine is like an epic Lucifer Sam jam. You need to bump it though like wow, 3.5? |
Jethro42
12.22.14 | Love your Asia Minor's Sound Off, Friday! |
SharkTooth
12.22.14 | I love both albums, but I'll give this to 1 since it's much more ambitious, and has a lot more interesting stuff going on, that being said both are really good albums |
Friday13th
12.22.14 | Glad you got a kick out of it Jethro :] It was hard to compete with Meat's lol |
SharkTooth
12.22.14 | lol I should've nominated Asia just to piss people off :D |
Jethro42
12.22.14 | @Friday, you got my vote 3 times lol
@Shark, however the first Asia was great |
menawati
12.22.14 | asia minor is one i already really like, enid was good but going to vote for asia minor |
Frippertronics
12.22.14 | having listened to 1 god knows how many times, 2 is gonna take some time to even stand a chance. |
Jethro42
12.22.14 | The Enid is a unique and dynamic, classical inspired prog rock. It's hard to make a final decision. I like both albums for different reasons. The Enid reminds me pretty much of After Crying who created complex and moody music. |
Frippertronics
12.22.14 | After Crying? Never heard of them, but if they're similar to my boys, what's the best album to start with? |
Jethro42
12.22.14 | Start with this track; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYO_p5nUX0g
Go chronologically. First is ''Overground Music'' |
Frippertronics
12.22.14 | thanks, will check once Something Wicked is finished. |
Friday13th
12.22.14 | Both will be long-lasting future jams no doubt, but I'm going with Between Flesh and Divine. Everything is just so well executed on that thing...between flesh and divine is right. |
Frippertronics
12.22.14 | fuk.. |
Jethro42
12.22.14 | 2 is an instant win to me. It contains all the ingredients that makes me love prog rock so much. Symphonic prog mostly instrumental with mellotron and vintage keys, flute, inventive guitar, adventurous arrangements, odd time signature, melodic...
Enid is an acquired taste to me. They're definitely getting better with each listens. Their qualities are more subtle. They offer a symphonic orchestration too, but more in a classical way. Brillant as well but I'm less accustomed to that genre of prog. I guess I'll end up tossing a coin. |
Jethro42
12.22.14 | I also love some cello and violin into my prog, but you can't always get what you want (but if you try sometimes...) |
Frippertronics
12.22.14 | true
odd observation, i noticed the middle of the Enid cover is similar to a swastika. interesting to say the least, probably a coincidence. |
SCREAM!
12.23.14 | Asia Minor is definitely more immediately gratifying than The Enid. Wouldnt feel right voting yet after only one listen though |
Jethro42
12.23.14 | Disturbing in effect, Fripp.
@SCREAM, listen to The Enid at least twice in a row and you will see the light. |
Frippertronics
12.23.14 | According to last.fm, I've heard 1 around 60-70 times. Asia Minor is gonna need to blow me away if it even stands a chance. |
Jethro42
12.23.14 | This round is a very hard one. Really. |
VinVal
12.23.14 | que es? |
Onirium
12.23.14 | Both albums sound like growers. The Enid seems like the most interesting pick after the first jam, but I think Asia Minor could reveal some intricacies after some time as well. It was more immediate, but after the first spin I feel like it lacks a bit of personality, and doesn't really bring anything new to the table. I'll jam them at least 2-3 times before voting though |
zakalwe
12.23.14 | Enid for me, Jessica is a class tune.
The lyrics on Asia Minor are lol. |
menawati
12.23.14 | most prog lyrics are lol though |
Friday13th
12.23.14 | so far 2-2 |
Frippertronics
12.23.14 | gonna go with the Enid this round |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.23.14 | both are equally shitte~ :D |
Friday13th
12.23.14 | ouch haha equally have none you mean |
TwigTW
12.23.14 | I like the Asia Minor because it's mellow, but at the same time there is still plenty going on. Like someone already mentioned, it doesn't break any new ground--but that's OK with me . . . Still need to listen to the Enid. |
TwigTW
12.23.14 | @Friday:
That Asia Minor rating is still growing, and the Gnidrolog is too. |
TwigTW
12.23.14 | "most prog lyrics are lol though"
Lol, Please don't say I have to judge the lyrics. I love Jon Anderson but what the heck is he even singing about in those Yes songs?! |
Friday13th
12.23.14 | lol yeah they're not distracting at least |
Jethro42
12.23.14 | Given that a choice has to be made, I'll go with Asia Minor. Good till the last drop, and I would ask for more. Needless to say the album runs too fast omg. I'm digging The Enid too, but my ear takes more time to digest that kind of orchestral music. BUT I love the album so much more now that I've listened to it like 5 times. |
Frippertronics
12.23.14 | tied 3-3 now |
Friday13th
12.23.14 | thank you fripp :] |
Frippertronics
12.23.14 | no prob
will this one go down to the wire, or will one of the albums get BTFO |
Jethro42
12.23.14 | @Fripp, the swastika on the cover art is probably not a coincidence since a reviewer from Progarchives said this about SWTWC;
''This was another concept album written during and about the world of nuclear weapon and the potential effects and the destruction of the world.'' |
Frippertronics
12.23.14 | Ah, interesting. I knew about the concept, and talked about it in my review, but that is something new. Maybe this is a question I should ask Max Read when I get the chance. |
Jethro42
12.23.14 | Max Read? Is it a kind of Wikipedia? Also have you listened to that After Crying song? |
Frippertronics
12.23.14 | no, he's been a member of The Enid since 1994.
Not yet, I'll get to it.
Have you checked The Spell? |
Frippertronics
12.23.14 | also took a big dive and subscribed to The Enidi, the band's fan club. Will it be worth it? Who knows, but I'm supporting the band the best way I can. |
Jethro42
12.23.14 | The Spell? Never heard of it.. And yes you're truly an Enid ambassador ;) |
Frippertronics
12.23.14 | lol Jethro come on, I reviewed it.
http://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/64425/The-Enid-The-Spell/
and as with any review before Salome, it comes with a stream/download. |
Jethro42
12.23.14 | ah I see...Désolé mon ami, no, I'll get to it now that Enid is really enticing to me. |
Frippertronics
12.23.14 | no rush man
that 4.5 tho |
Jethro42
12.23.14 | Well according to my comments on that thread, I've started to listen to The Spell for the least. But I have no souvenirs. And what is ''that 4.5 though'' ? |
Frippertronics
12.23.14 | I was talking about your rating for 1 |
Jethro42
12.23.14 | Well I was going to give it a 4, thinking that it could be transformed to a 4.5 ''eventually''. Currently it's more like a 4.2 or something. So I said to myself, go ahead, it's worth a 4.5. On the other hand, Asia Minor was an instant 4.5 and is a contender for a 5. |
Calc
12.24.14 | my vote be for Asia minor |
OwMySnauze
12.24.14 | Gonna go with Asia Minor on this one. |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.24.14 | Jethro, Catapilla is a contender for a 5 |
Friday13th
12.24.14 | If you're not actually contributing to the contest, Gentleman, I'm gonna ask you to leave with your agenda
;] |
Friday13th
12.24.14 | vote stands 3-5 |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.24.14 | Hey, I can still comment :B |
Friday13th
12.24.14 | jk I'll probably check Catapilla soon |
TwigTW
12.24.14 | The Enid isn't what I expected. "Then There Were None" reminds me of Eno. The vocals obviously, but the humor also. Hearing some Strawbs influence on the title track too, very nice. |
TwigTW
12.24.14 | Found this Enid trivia online: "In 1981, the band played most of the music for Kim Wilde's self-titled debut album." (but no one knows who Kim Wilde is, right?)
Here it is if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTOx89iBI5I |
Frippertronics
12.24.14 | heard some of that album once, have no interest in returning to it, even if I'm an Enid fanatic. |
Jethro42
12.24.14 | @Gentleman, You make me think, I have to verify if my 4.5 for Catapilla is the right rating or if I went too quickly with it. Gotta revisit asap (I really think 4.5 is legit)..Album left me on a good impression. |
Jethro42
12.24.14 | @fripp, I gave a spin to The Spell, but I was not too attentive half of the time. I'll have to revisit that one too when not disturbed. I can see you digging After Crying so get to it :).. Thank me later. |
Frippertronics
12.24.14 | Yeah, I'll definitely get to it soon. Cheers! |
menawati
12.24.14 | "the band played most of the music for Kim Wilde's self-titled debut album"
that's bizarre |
Friday13th
12.24.14 | Voting ends Christmas Day! Waiting for 8 more. |
TwigTW
12.24.14 | Enjoyed The Enid, look forward to checking out more of their catalogue, but Asia Minor gets my vote. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.24.14 | not sure if im going to make voting cut off on this one sorry, visiting family in 'Murica and I'm not sure I'm going to have the time today to listen to them, I'll try tho |
Friday13th
12.24.14 | fine but only for Jesus' birthday |
SCREAM!
12.24.14 | Gonna have to go with Asia Minor. I'm still kind of torn though. Asia Minor is very well done but doesn't really try anything new that wasn't already done in the 70's. The Enid is a lot more ambitious and has some really interesting ideas but something about it just hasn't clicked with me. Maybe in time it will but we shall have to wait and see. |
Friday13th
12.24.14 | Cool 3-7 |
Mad.
12.25.14 | Hard to choose, Asia Minor is more accessible but I can tell The Enid has some interesting stuff going on... |
Onirium
12.25.14 | I have to go with with The Enid, it's just much richer and more interesting. Asia Minor is excellent and greatly executed, but, musically, it doesn't bring anything new to the table. |
Friday13th
12.25.14 | okay 4-7
I'll take votes for the rest of the day but I'll put the next one up. |
manosg
12.25.14 | Count me in for 2 even though I won't rate any of the two for now. Both albums need repeated listens and especially The Enid. |
Friday13th
12.25.14 | 4-8 |
SCREAM!
12.25.14 | I feel like in the long run The Enid might have won this but it seems like a lot of people just didn't have time to properly digest the album |
Frippertronics
12.25.14 | those 8 people were Fools tbh
please don't miss the terribly done pun. |
Friday13th
12.26.14 | ? sorry I'm slow |
Frippertronics
12.26.14 | first album tracklisting check it u r slow |
Friday13th
12.26.14 | Oh Summer Stars...cut me some slack, Fripp, it's named Tower of Babel on the re-release |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.26.14 | frip is pissd |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.26.14 | Fripper is The Devil
HOHOHOHOHO |
Frippertronics
12.26.14 | scuse u boi, Fool and The Falling Tower are seperate tracks
4-8 and an angry frippah who didn't get his Shaking the Habitual for Chrimbus is nothing to fukc with man
got tons of eno records so that's cool too |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.26.14 | haha |
Frippertronics
12.26.14 | probably gonna just order it later anyways, already ordered an autographed copy of 1 off discogs (legit or not, who cares, it was 3 dollars).
all those 4.5s and it still lost. fuckin how lol |
Friday13th
12.26.14 | yeah it's a world of inconsistencies |
Frippertronics
12.26.14 | will be wishing the worst fate for Asia Minor tbh |
Friday13th
12.26.14 | may it be blotted out of obscure prog forums forever LOL |
Frippertronics
12.26.14 | yes |
Friday13th
12.26.14 | the pitty is TWIG barely cares and you're over here getting ulcers |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.26.14 | As Coverdale and Hughes would say:
BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURN
(always wanted to say that tbh) |
Frippertronics
12.26.14 | b-but taking t-the piss... |
gagnonov
12.26.14 | late, because of stuff, anyway vote goes to asia minor by a small margin |
SCREAM!
12.26.14 | Way to salt frips wound man hahA |
Friday13th
12.26.14 | lol we're done here. Asia Minor wins 8-4 and everyone who didn't vote is off the hook but JUST THIS ONCE! |
Frippertronics
12.27.14 | bollocks |
TwigTW
12.28.14 | Yay |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.29.14 | i know i missed voting but just wanted to say this one was super fucking close. they are both phenomenal. i think i would have voted for Enid just because I find that album more innovative. Between Flesh is incredibly well crafted but it isn't anything that hadn't been done. |
Friday13th
12.29.14 | yeah this one was the hardest so far |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.29.14 | glad it wasnt a close contest tho, would suck if this was close enough that my vote would have broken a tie or tied this off |
MeatSalad
12.29.14 | Was thinking the same thing, was busy during this one. Already heard asia minor long before but i know the enid is a fantastic band from hearing their debut |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.29.14 | haha yeah well with both of us voting for enid it would still be 6-8 so we coo |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.29.14 | sorry fripp
|
Frippertronics
12.29.14 | lol no prob
next time... |
MeatSalad
12.29.14 | Im glad these lists actually get people to listen to the albums though, I'd put asia minor on a list and maybe 1 or 2 people would rate it |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.29.14 | yeah this is cool i feel like we should do more of these with other genres |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.29.14 | Yeah, more effective, funnier and interesting than recs lists |
MeatSalad
12.29.14 | Friday i think did a psych version of this once, that was pretty dope |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.29.14 | Ye, but mah submit lost in 1st round, so dat contest sucked |
MeatSalad
12.29.14 | Mine won though so Im biased u no |
Frippertronics
12.29.14 | I think I got one, since I'm good at ripping off lists
maybe a drone or 2014 album competition? |
Friday13th
12.29.14 | Yeah I did the psych and we were tossing around the idea of jazz or jazz fusion. Classic heavy metal maybe. As long as its a genre that gets talked about frequently on sputnik I'm sure it would be a success. I won't do something I'm not into though, so if you guys wanted to jam some post rock or black metal you'll have to do it yourselves :] |
Friday13th
12.29.14 | @Gentleman and Meat lol my uppity winners are at it again |
Frippertronics
12.29.14 | I think I got it
2014 albums that have less than 35 votes
who'd do it? |
MeatSalad
12.29.14 | I'd be down for a fusion contest although im not anywhere near well versed in the genre |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.29.14 | As long as it is 70's m8 |
Friday13th
12.29.14 | @fripp oh boy, not me. I probably listened to like 5 albums released this year. |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.29.14 | "2014 albums that have less than 35 votes "
You mean 99% of the albums of this year? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.29.14 | @frip drone would be cool, id also like to do an electronic one and a 90's hip-hop one
jazz and jazz fusion ones would be cool too as well as a like etheo/afro jazz kind of one.
i wouldnt really be into a classic heavy metal one tho a lot of that shit is not my scene
id do a black metal one hard
@frip id do a 2014 with less than 35 hard, wish it was a little earlier tho it could have been really cool to have some users get some lesser knowns potentially on their 2014 lists |
Friday13th
12.29.14 | Hold on...death metal...nevermind, just seeing if BigPleb shows up lol |
Frippertronics
12.29.14 | well i could do drone/electronic/obscure recent lists
whatever the majority is and I'm up for hosting. I think doing a minimal one with 8/12 would work best. |
Frippertronics
12.29.14 | I'm leaning toward doing the 2014 one anyways
sure if it was earlier, it'd get on lists, but it'd be better to make them feel stupid for ignoring them in the first place, no? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
12.29.14 | lets do er |
Frippertronics
12.29.14 | tmrw |
