Mister Twister 11.22.14	Without bringing in anime that I've watched exclusively based on how awful they are? It's a close call, but Chaos;Head is just slightly worse than Claymore. They both had terribly handled plots, a nearly completely unlikeable roster of characters, and were just all-around absurdly boring, but Claymore had a better aesthetic about it. There's really nothing redeeming about Chaos;Head. Seriously, when your show has two characters that are tolerable (Yua and Mamoru) and you kill one off halfway through the damn show, you've really fucked up. It's just amazing to me that the same people made Steins;Gate, which is easily top 5 in my book. Another good way to sum up a major flaw with Chaos;Head is the TVTropes statement regarding it having an Idiot Plot: "Most of the plot consists of Takumi trying to get away from everyone who could help him due to his paranoia."

Mister Twister 11.22.14	To be fair, I've not really seen many overwhelmingly awful anime, but again I'm purposely not including shit like Garzey's Wing that already has too much of an infamy for being awful for me to watch and take in as a serious viewing. The fact that half of Chaos;Head focused on the New Gen murders, whichas you've mentioned went nowhere, was a huge problem. I think the fact that the big twist of who the murderer was is amongst the most careless things about the show, to be honest. Who the fuck had any idea who that character was in the first place? It would have honestly been better if they had just introduced a new character entirely, because as it was it's like they thought out making it a shocking twist without thinking out if it makes sense and is something that the audience is gonna care about. And once again, it's very badly hurt by the fact that there's only really two characters that aren't absurdly annoying. We have a generic shut-in that's flat and is a total douchebag, we have his annoying as fuck little sister, Rei copycat, um, that one bitch with the black hair I guess (if she actually counted as a character), moeblob that's mute, Evil McShady-Villain, two of his henchmen whom we didn't know nearly enough about for us to care about the villainous reveal... Seriously though, Yua and Mamoru are the closest things the show has to likeable characters. When the generic grizzled detective cardboard cutout is one of the best parts of your show, you've sincerely fucked up. Regarding Claymore, it's more or less because of that disastrous ending. That entire arc is just what the fuck. I get it, the manga's not over so you can't follow it beyond that. I would still rather see an original ending that actually makes an effort to tie up the loose ends from the lazy cliffhanger we were given. Fullmetal Alchemist did that, and whether it's better than the manga's route is debatable, but hey, it's still okay, and there was a clear effort. Really, if Claymore's conclusion made any sense without me going to read the manga and find out what happened, it would have been merely mediocre, not really worthy of me having mentioned it at all.

Mister Twister 11.22.14	I agree that Takumi could have been an okay character, I just feel like he really wasn't handled well, and any character development he underwent was because the plot needed him to, rather than from things that are actually related to what he's experienced. Also, his reaction to Yua trying to help him with his mental health problems, something I vaguely recall him acknowledging in his head that yes he is becoming unhinged, is to sucker punch her and run away. Not cool. And yeah, the whole swords bullshit is bullshit. I would have absolutely preferred them going the route of making the audience guess who's right and have it to do with the New Gen the whole way through, but I guess they had wound up writing themselves into a hole halfway through and needed to switch it up. Steins;Gate is better in every way. Basically every single character is sympathetic and you can understand the situation, aside from those that are explicitly intended to be despised of course, and the story is actually really well put together. There's something people say that it's easy to use time travel in your story as a means to advance it while basing the story entirely around time travel is difficult, but it actually succeeded. What I mean by that, I'll use Doctor Who as an example. It uses time travel, but as a means to enable the story line, not as the story line itself. An actual plot specifically written about time travel as a concept is incredibly hard to create. I could be controversial and point out that I could only get through six episodes of Darker than Black before giving up because it was boring as shit, but I don't think it's fair to say "X is bad" when I didn't watch the whole say through. Given what I've heard about Season 2 though, it probably was for the best that I didn't watch it.

I don't know if it gets better from there, but given that I had already known how terrible people think the second season is, and that a fifth of the way into the first season there was nothing to really care about from my point of view, I couldn't really find the motivation to go on.

Angelboros 11.22.14	Sword Art Online wasn't too bad until its second arc. Introducing a different VRMMO whilst not even bothering to change the series' title is one thing, though bringing in a terribly-written character as the antagonist and having Kirito's "sister" suddenly play a part in the story where she ends up not being relevant enough is going a bit too far. Kawahara also must've had his head up his ass for turning Asuna into a goddamn damsel in distress for pretty much the entirety of the time, because I thought she had potential beforehand... and then all of that came to pass. What sank the first season of said anime's ship might as well be the cast: how your central protagonist goes from a slightly unbelievable lone wolf to a cringeworthy Marty Stu is beyond anyone's guess, and the recurring characters who had little impact on the simple, yet somehow head-bangingly stupid plot really should've been handled better. Thankfully the second season is nowhere near as atrocious so far, though it still has some of SAO's first season's worst traits - a wee bit downplayed, but still present nonetheless. I myself haven't seen any other anime I'd officially consider terrible aside from maybe World War Blue, which is a reimagining of the whole console wars argument which got beaten like a dead horse.

If some keeps killing innocent people thus ruining families, he/she must be stopped. The whole Diclonius instinct excuse is stupid, by this logic terrorists aren't bad people, after all they're raised to kill as much innocent american people as they can, so you can't blame them if they blow your best friend into pieces because it's not just natural but good for them.

The concept is still there, so something good is present. Anyway, a really bad show I recall watching would be B Gata H Kei which I dropped at half of the first episode. Other than that... I don't know, I usually stay away from things I know I won't like.

EasyModeDX 11.22.14	Mekaku City Actors makes all of the shows on this list look like an Ufotable production and I'm not even blowing things out of proportion here. It has the most incoherent art I've ever seen, they tried to be really artsy fartsy with the colors they used for the lineart in particular (my favorite was vomit green) but they fucked up since the lineart is so thick there is no definition to the characters, also the colors themselves don't translate well into the final product. You'll usually see a blob of gray with some red elements here and there. Those are the colors. When they don't use red they use some other color but always accompanied with shades of grey. The end result is often murky with some brief scenes where they get it right (where they top using shades and actually put some real color into it). Generic, copy paste and low res backgrounds, awfully drawn characters with rare glimpses of good representation here and there, ugly, sometimes non present animation, Doesn't do justice to the original material in any way, original plot replaced by some edgy bullshit that doesn't even obey the rules this show provides in the first place. Also it looks like they spent all the budget in a particular flashback scene which is represented as a hand drawn picture book, which has some A+ grade artwork. it's eye candy in its purest of forms, but it's the only beautiful thing about it. You'll be yearning to gouge your eyeballs out the rest of the time, with those infamous Neon Genesis Evangelion moments where characters are having a conversation but the camera is so far from what's being discussed so they didn't even have to bother with lip syncing. They also pick the worst approach to everything. Some scenes in the end where the characters are running through a corridor while talking about plot stuff for ten minutes. Characters sitting still in the same place for long periods of time without any movement whatsoever. Also awful anatomy, incorrect proportions and stuff. Seriously, there are some "deviantart weaboo drawn" tier scenes. And it's a recent show too, started airing mid April this year and technically it looks dated as fuck. I could be watching a 14 year old anime, and overall it will be a lot more concise and just better animation wise, since it would actually have ANIMATION, which is something this one lacks at times.

But besides, I've always felt that people approach Elfen Lied the wrong way. I feel that its good way (overblown yes) of showing how destructive the cycle of bullying and discrimination can be. Lucy goes overboard and starts mercilessly killing humans regardless of whether or not they've done anything untoward because she was always abused and laughed at because she had horns and later (after she meets Kouta the second time) gradually comes to regret the monster that she's become. Admittedly there are lots of aspects to Elfen Lied that make it hard to appreciate and we all know what those are, but don't completely write it off (or completely miss the point).

Given how intense the atmosphere was and the umbrella scene, it was hugely disappointing to see it basically turn into "who's gonna die this episode" every time. Not to mention, that ending was a disaster.

Mister Twister 11.23.14	One thing I will say about Another though, I've never hated a background character more in my life. Remember Kenzou Kawahori? Probably not, because he's never actually referred to by name in the show. Anyways, the only two things he does are: call Kouichi an asshole for trying to stop the witch hunt on Mei, and escape from the chandelier and leave the other three trapped. I was happy when that pillar fell, and that the other three lived. That was honestly the best part of the entire final few episodes.

VaxXi 11.23.14	Thats a pretty good list Jas, finding good anime is sorta hard because of how unreliable that MAL is (Blue Exorcist has a 8/10 and Sao has an 8.4/10) and how most fans will try to tell you its good when it really isn't. Also theres so much anime out there its hard to find anything worthwhile. That is usually why I just stick with your standard american cartoons.

They are somewhat difficult compared to Adventure and Tamers, but especially Savers has actually a pretty good story, it's just drawn awfully. Xros Wars is strange, only watched the first 15 or so episodes and I wouldn't exactly call it worthwhile. Adventure 3 with the same director and writer as the first 3 seasons? That could work, anything else is almost bound to suck.

ResidentNihilist 11.24.14	the dialogue is probably the best example, it's very stilted and artficial in places, specifically in many scenes between Gendo and Fuyutsuki, about how man has sinned etc. The point gets across but the dialogue feels unnatural. I could apply the same thing to Rei's last monologue in End which was good but could've been done better. The show's at it's best when it's at a complete mindfuck with the imagery, best examples Asuka's mind rape and the Instrumentality sequence, as they're very powerful and it doesn't need to say a lot to say everything. Also when it's parodying conventions of anime etc. and give them a disturbing spin (the setup, the characters etc.). Yet when it tries to say a lot it ends up sounding like the sort of speech used in a really bad sci-fi novel where the author has no fucking understanding of what a human being is. It's also a trait found in a lot of anime and it's representative of my main problem with the anime, sure it takes anime conventions etc. and twists them but it feels so deliberate that it seems as if it was created with no real heart more as if it's scientific analysis. I know that it's supposed to be a psychological exploration of the creator's depression etc. but it becomes so obsessed with details and showing this to the viewer about how self-aware it is, it feels too self-important and too clinical in many ways. It's like seeing the magician doing the trick and then him going over every single detail for two hours on end, the mystique's lost in translation and it becomes stale, same here in many places. What it does do well, the stuff like the surrealist sequences and the relationships between the children, Misato etc., it does very well but I feel it only really gets good with End because it just basically goes nuts, throws you in at the deep end and doesn't give two flying fucks about it. Overrall the message is a good one but the execution is patchy. Well expecting this to be torn apart lol

TheBarber 03.10.16	It feels rushed at first and then it just keeps getting worse and worse before enfing kinda randomly, the relation between the two heroes is some really great stuff but the animation is good awful especially compared to the manga and the character interactions just feel clunky and dated (not to mention lame fighting), the only moment with actual atmosphere is the first episode. Can't remember the soundtrack though sorry I know you love this show (saw your list on another website) but it's too much of a bore to me to see a camera pan on sketchy drawings of unanimated battles :/

The studio went bankrupt so season 1 ends on ep 12 in the middle of a story arc so that's kind of irredeemable imo. Story was cool and I liked that one of the protagonists was a deaf samurai, but that ending ;_; Now I have to go read the manga to find out what happens even though I don't really love comics/manga.
