Safest Albums Of 2014 So Far?

There's been plenty of best of lists and we all know what the worst albums have been pretty much. But what about the middle ground? By safe, I mean albums that really weren't surprising; albums that didn't do anything. Specifically albums that saw a band cruising on auto-pilot, ambition-less albums. Or maybe albums that just did what everybody else has already done. I'll try to explain in the album descriptions for each album. Also please comment your own, as I can only go on what I have listened to so far this year (which isn't very much).
1Anathema
Distant Satellites

Now, I don't think this is a particularly weak album, I really like it. However it's just too
Anathema, way too predictable. While I enjoyed it, I felt that the production was just trying to
trick me into thinking that this run of the mill modern prog album was spectacular, it felt
cheap. Anathema haven't really done anything impressive at all, it just sounds good and it's a
pretty weak Anathema album compared to everything else they've done. 3.6/5
2The Contortionist
Language

An enjoyable release to say the least but I find that it relies heavily on tried and tested ideas,
most of which are things that every body else is doing right now. While this album was pretty
good, you do get sick of this sort of thing after awhile. 3.4/5
3Death From Above 1979
The Physical World

I haven't listened to their other stuff, so I wasn't anticipating this. That being said, this album
doesn't stand well on its own. Nothing about this really made me want to check out Death
From Above 1979, nor did it make me want to give the album another listen. I just feel like
I've heard this sort of thing done better. 2.6/5
4Nightmare
To Be or Not to Be

I was prepared for the worst for this one, but it was a pleasant surprise. But holy shit the
band dick-ride Avex hard. While there is still some of the old Nightmare song writing
sensibility sprinkled in there, it still manages to sound like every single other Visual-Kei act
out today. While this is a step up from their previous two releases and it's a really enjoyable
listen, Nightmare seriously need to either (1. take a hiatus for a bit (2. drop their label or (3.
just step up and realise that they're backing themselves into a corner. 2.9/5
5Opeth
Pale Communion

There's not much unsaid about this. Opeth just did exactly what was wrong with Heritage a
second time; made a bland, unoriginal 70's prog rip-off. Why Opeth decided to abandon one of
the most unique sounds in the genre is beyond me. Overall it is a better release than
Heritage, but its still over-indulgent and uninteresting to listen to; the perfect combination to
isolate fans. 2.5/5
6The Pineapple Thief
Magnolia

I'm not really into the Pineapple Thief and this album made no attempt to change that. This
just comes across as a really shallow, melodramatic album and I'm sure, like Distant
Satellites, that this does not stack up well against the rest of their discography. 2.4/5
7TK From Ling Tosite Sigure
Fantastic Magic

A really good album on it own, but if you're a fan of Ling Tosite Sigure and you want to know
what the front-man would do with his own project... well, it sounds like Ling Tosite Sigure, but
there's a bit of keyboard and some of the songs are slower. Nothing much that really warrants
being a side-project and I don't really see that as a bad thing but it's just really obvious. 3.5/5
