11.11.14 | "I've heard many say that the singer for Iron Maiden is AMAZING"
he's a bit of an acquired taste tbh but iron maiden is a pretty good place to start with |

11.11.14 | but Judas Priest [3]
for newer stuff, try Mastodon's discog in reverse. They're pretty accessible now but it's a steady descent into sludgy awesomeness as you go back. |
ThrashTillDeath94
11.11.14 | I started with Metallica. But also Black Sabbath would be a good introduction. Early Sabbath is like the beginnings of the genre if that's what your into. If you choose Metallica though, try Ride the Lightning. Easily one of their best records and is considered a classic of the genre. |
AmericanFlagAsh
11.11.14 | Coming from a guy who never really listened to metal before and is still getting into it, here is what I have loved:
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Mastodon - Crack The Skye
|
pedro70512
11.11.14 | or just listen to this from beginning (sort of metal) to end (definitely metal).

11.11.14 | I think it all depends on finding something that's catchy, something that immediately makes you go "whoa, that's awesome!" That alone can make a genre you didn't know much about soon become a genre that you can't get enough of. You can't dive straight into metal and expect to suddenly love it. Alice In Chains, Metallica, Tool, Sabbath, Megadeth, and Pantera are all great places to start. |
mandan
11.11.14 | but Judas Priest [4]
I guess these guys already got you set up, so there's little to add here. |
betray
11.11.14 | "lol fuck no"
Sempiternal or There Is a Hell by Bring Me The Horizon would be fine starting recommendations for someone just getting into metal.
Metallica - S/T
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction
Judas Priest - Sad Wings [2]
Sylosis - Conclusion of An Age
System of a Down - Toxicity
Deftones - S/T

11.11.14 | "Death- Symbolic"
Beginners should prob keep away from death metal tbh |
apokolypz
11.11.14 | Start out with some hard sound bands. Not really metal yet, but it works the heavy sound in. "Hard Rock" stuff like
AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Kyuss stuff like that just to get the ears working.
Then I'd start out with some of the pioneers of metal:
Black Sabbath (heavy, fun, easy to get into)
Iron Maiden (fast and fun)
Judas Priest (along the same lines of Iron Maiden)
After those guys I'd start working into some of the "harsher" sounding bands, not extreme metal or anything, but we're getting a little more fast, thrashy, just a tad more modern in terms of time:
Metallica (their first 4 albums, though you may find their 5th one, the self-titled, most accessible)
Slayer (not for faint of heart)
Pantera (groove driven)
Testament
If you dug those guys and want to keep going I'd suggest checking out a little bit of black metal and death metal. This is we're accessibility is being lost, but you never know, you could find something special and awesome
Death (the band)
Opeth
Deafheaven (not traditional black metal, but they spice things up, you might like them if you're looking for something with some variety)
Morbid Angel
You've basically got a good run down of metal with that. But then a couple misc. modern bands you should check out if interested, to see what the modern world has been doing with the genre and such
Deftones (one of the only good "nu-metal" bands if you even consider them that)
System of a Down
Killswitch Engage
Meshuggah
|
betray
11.11.14 | Slayer (not for faint of heart) |

11.11.14 | Apokolypz made a really fine post there, I suggest you take this guy's advice |

Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance, Stained Class, Painkiller, Sad Wings of Destiny, British Steel, Defenders of the Faith
Metallica - First 5 albums

Death Metal: Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness, Blessed Are The Sick, Covenant
Death - Symbolic, Human, Individual Thought Patterns, The Sound of Perseverance
Cannibal Corpse - Anything, but preferably either their past 4 albums or their first 4 albums
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Cynic - Focus
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence, Piece of Time
Opeth - Still Life, Blackwater Park
Suffocation - First 4 albums
Cryptopsy - None So Vile |

Gameofmetal
11.11.14 | NWOBHM and thrash is what he needs |
Totengott
11.11.14 | Black Sabbath should be the best start, then try Judas Priest, Megadeth, Coroner, Opeth, Dark Tranquillity,
Immolation, Darkthrone, Emperor, Agalloch and ( old ) Ulver. In that order. |
Tunaboy45
11.11.14 | The first metal band I ever got into was *deep breath* slipknot. |

11.11.14 | But I'd recommend Opeth, Pig Destroyer or Iron Maiden. |

I haven't listened to Emperor for like 1-2 months, the same for Dark Tranquillity. I hardly listened to the other bands the past month, so no, you're wrong. |
Aftertheascension
11.11.14 | Start with Heavy Metal
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Disturbed - Indestructible
Avenged Sevenfold - City Of Evil
Motorhead - Overkill
Then you probably want to move into thrash
Metallica - Master Of Puppets
Metallica - Ride The Lightening
Metallica - ...And Justice For All
Mortillery - Origin Of Extinction
Nervosa - Victim of Yourself
Then you can start fucking around with extreme metal. Try some metalcore (not really 'extreme metal' but it's a gateway) or Prog metal first.
Metalcore:
Between The Buried And Me - Colors
Trivium - Vengeance Falls
Bring Me The Horizon - Suicide Season
Bring Me The Horizon - Sempiternal
Prog. metal:
Opeth - Orchid,
Opeth - My Arms, Your Hearse
Opeth - Still Life
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Agalloch - The Mantle
Emperor - ITNSE
Emperor - Anthems...
and move from there. |
Dryden

Gameofmetal
11.11.14 | DO NOT TRY CONVERGE OR YOU WILL NEVER GET INTO METAL
try them once you get deep into the genre
Aftertheascension I just think that the early 2000s melodic metalcore wave is the best bet to start getting into metal with screaming and really brutal shit, it's how I went about it. |
Aftertheascension
11.11.14 | lol I just listened to disturbed and then went straight to fucking deathcore (good stuff not emmure or something)
I really think the early 2000's metalcore was bad. Just a basic riff with screaming, chorus with poppy vox and power chords, verse, chorus, breakdown, chorus.
I don't like it but whatevs. |
Aftertheascension
11.11.14 | and yeah converge is a bad idea for your first metal band.
Also, don't try black metal until you're deep into metal. I still am having trouble getting into it. |
Gameofmetal
11.11.14 | Man the early 2000s metalcore bands riff harder than many of the bands out around the late 2000s/2010s honestly.

I got into metal through a lot of nu-metal bands (which I still like) so you might want to start with bands like Korn, Slipknot, Disturbed and Mudvayne. These kinds of bands are generally not 'as' heavy and they fuse catchy/groovy elements and hip-hop influences that can make them more appealing to people who haven't really listened to metal before. There's something to kind of latch on to i guess, and you'll find it easier to like it. Then you can move on to more extreme stuff if that's what your interested in. |
