John Frusciante Ranked (with Descriptions)

I've been obsessed with his work for a while so I thought I should rank these albums. I would've ranked all of his stuff (like RHCP, Ataxia, the album he did with Klinghoffer, etc.) but there is stuff that he was part of that I haven't listened to yet or that I need to listen a bit more before doing that kind of list. Maybe someday. At the end of each description I put my favorite lyric and two of my favorite songs from that album (my favorite songs right now because they change constantly). So, here it is:
1John Frusciante
The Empyrean

The Spiritual One - One of my favorite albums ever (not just from him). I remember this was kinda hard to listen to at first. It was different than the stuff I usually listened to. For the first 2 or 3 times I would get to the 3rd song and then I would just stop. I don't want to sound cheesy but I think it was too powerful. Although it's my favorite it's not really the one that I listen to the most. I listen to songs from the album every now and then but listening to the whole album has become like a special thing to me - like a religious experience or something like that. Every time there's something that remains in my head after I listen to it. Sometimes a lick from 'Before the Beginning' or the solo from 'Unreachable' or (most recently) the scream at the end of the guitar solo on 'Central'. ("When I was five I saw some plants ungrowing")

2John Frusciante
Curtains

The Acoustic One - This was the first Frusciante album that I listened to. It's pretty much my go-to album as it is a very easy listen, it's short and being acoustic it's very calming (although it does have its heavy moments). I don't know if describing this as a simple acoustic album would do justice to it because it has a lot of the elements that make his songs sound like HIS SONGS, it's not just a guy strumming his guitar while sitting on a pillow on the living room floor with his back leaning against the couch... wait. ("Emptiness replace my soul")

3John Frusciante
Shadows Collide with People

The 'Everything' One - The first album he released in 2004 (a year which proved to be...pretty good for him). This is the most recommended starting point if you want to get into his music being considered his magnum-opus, I tend to disagree with the last part. The album is very up-beat, pop(-ish) and it has everything (hence the name I gave it): fast hard songs, slow sad songs(although not that many), acoustic numbers, a lot of synth stuff and some weird instrumentals. Even the more sad songs have an up-beat instrumental, which may sound a bit creepy now that I mentioned it but it's actually uplifting. ("Be anyone you want to be")

4John Frusciante
To Record Only Water For Ten Days

The Electronic One - His first more conventional(?) album - very accessible. It still feels a bit lo-fi (which is not a bad thing) but it's not as weird as his previous albums. Actually his first 'electronic' album but this one is incredibly different than the ones he released later in his career. An acoustic guitar played over some electronic-beats (or vice-versa), a little touch here, a bit of synth there and they jell together perfectly. ("Fly a ladder around")

5John Frusciante
Inside of Emptiness

The Heavy One - An abundance of falsetto singing (there is some screaming too) over chord strumming with distortion. It sounds way better than how I described it. If I think about it, Frusciante's music isn't really known for being that complex or complicated but it's complex enough so that every song is unique and you won't think that you're listening to the same song over the course of an entire album. ("And I'm useless, yes I'm useless")

6John Frusciante
The Will to Death

The Philosophical One - His lyrics are always cryptic and not that easy to understand but I've always seen this album as 'The Philosphical One' because I think the lyrics on it are very thought-provoking. Usually the lyrics are not vague just for the sake of being vague but they're not straightforward either. They make you come with your own interpretation or just enjoy them as they are and not necessarily find some illumination behind them. Some songs are very simple and it helps the lyrics get 'in your face' - I could give you examples but you can take any line from any song and it could make you scratch your head, whether it's out of context or not. ("Laughter's an ugly friend of mine")

7John Frusciante
Smile From The Streets You Hold

The Drugged One - I actually think I like this more than Niandra. Yes, I know the story of how Frusciante needed money and he gathered a few songs that he had and released them as an album but that doesn't make the songs less beautiful. If you want to convince someone how Frusciante is a genius and this amazing singer-songwriter then this is not the best starting point as this is a very hard album to get into. It's dark, it's weird, it's scary at times, this album is not for everyone (the same can be said for the rest of the albums on this list), however there's a certain beauty that this album has. I'm not trying to put the album on a pedestal because I don't think it's his best but I actually enjoy it. ("Life's a bath, sex is water")

Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt

The Stream of Consciousness One - His debut. Maybe some consider it his best album and, to be honest, I can see why people have positive opinions about this album as it is a very good one, I just prefer the others over this one. It did grew on me since the first time I listened to it. I think the 'Niandra LaDes' part is great but the thing that kinda drags it down for me is 'Usually Just a T-Shirt', the 2nd part with all the Untitled songs. I only recall 'Untitled 3' and 'Untitled 11' (because he played it on that VPRO interview - and I like that version). The 2nd part is not really something that I listen to very often, kinda like 'The Empyrean' but for different reasons. ("Your pussy's glued to a building on fire" - this lyric always creates a funny image inside my head)

Enclosure

The Last One - In spite of the percussion that seems really off a lot of the time the album actually has some great melodies and in that amalgam of sounds that the songs have there are 'moments' - Sometimes when I listen to a song (any song) there is a thing or two that catches my attention, whether it's a drum fill, some weird guitar bending, I don't know, there can be anything - this album has those kinds of moments which makes it a more pleasant listen. I'm not the biggest fan of this phase of his music career and I think it's more of an acquired taste, however it's not really a bad album, as I said I think there are some great melodies in here and it's a shame that they're buried in all that electronic mumbo-jumbo. ("Spin to the rhythm of what's around you, love")

10John Frusciante
PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone

The PBX One - Very rarely I listen to this album as it's my least favorite from him. The fact that he released the acappella version of 'Ratiug', although it is a great track, it reads as more of a middle finger to the listener, like: 'Here, I can still write a great song but you'll have to dig through all these electronic sounds first , deal with it'. Everything I said about 'Enclosure' applies here as well, it's just that I like this less than that one, but I don't really hate it. ("You can have my face right now")
