Vader
10.21.14 | Once I get four good recommendations I'll fill in those spots. What are some of your favourites? |
KrazyKris
10.21.14 | Would say Ju-On: The Grudge & Blair Witch Project, though I'm really no horror movie guy |
Graveyard
10.21.14 | think i've seen all of these |
ArsMoriendi
10.21.14 | Your list needs Misery. |
AtomicShane
10.21.14 | needs The Thing. I think I would make it evil dead 2 (or even the remake), and have either day or dawn instead of night of the living
dead (even though its a classic). Actually return of the living dead rules hella too. I would get rid of cabin in the woods and drag me
to hell too, but thats just me. ;) |
Let
10.21.14 | Return of the Living Dead. Linnea Quigley man... |
Vader
10.21.14 | Blair Witch Project is pretty decent, not one of my favourites though. Not a fan of The Grudge tbh.
Atomic: I need to see the sequel and remake. And Cabin and Drag Me to Hell aren't really horror movies in the sense that the others on the list are, but they're fun and ridiculous and I love them. |
lyzakthellama
10.22.14 | Watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNwT0ZedrLo |
Hyperion1001
10.22.14 | nice lots of good flicks on here |
Trebor.
10.22.14 | Re-Animator is amazing and on netflix
The House of The Devil is good
Return of The Living Dead is wag as fuck |
Vader
10.22.14 | lyzalthellama: I've seen that before and didn't think much of it I'm afraid
Trebor.: Reanimator looks pretty enjoyable, gonna add it to the list! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | fuck yeah suspiria
watch cannibal holocaust, its not strictly a horror film but its one of the most disturbing films ever made
also i actually really liked the evil dead remake to be honest, shit was brutal as fuck
|
Hyperion1001
10.22.14 | beware cannibal holocaust has actual animal killings in it so if you dont want to see that shit (i certainly didnt) beware
i dont think its even all that good, cannibal ferox and mountain of the cannibal god are better films in that subgenre. |
Trebor.
10.22.14 | my friend think the Evil Dead remake is supposed to be funny like Evil Dead 2 and I'm like what the fuck that shit is brutal as fuck and I couldn't get the imagery out of my head for like a week |
Hyperion1001
10.22.14 | the final scene with the bloodrain was fucking awesome
shame the rest of the movie wasnt all that good |
tempest--
10.22.14 | it's obvious but Texas Chain Saw Massacre
god damn love that film |
Kman418
10.22.14 | you're next is super fun
i been hypin the fuck out of it everywhere but resolution is a really really interesting movie too |
Trebor.
10.22.14 | saw You're Next in theaters yeah it was fun, main dude looks like Xeno too lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | "beware cannibal holocaust has actual animal killings in it so if you dont want to see that shit (i certainly didnt) beware
i dont think its even all that good, cannibal ferox and mountain of the cannibal god are better films in that subgenre."
then you missed the point entirely. the only reason those animal killings were in any way disturbing was because it had horrifying music going on. those animals were killed in a completely hunter + gatherer style, that shit is about 100 x more humane than the way the majority of the animals most any one here has ever eaten were killed. so if that really disturbs you all that much and you keep eating slaughterhouse beef, pork, and chicken, then you are a huge hypocrite. and thats just one of the many reasons that movie was brilliant. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | "my friend think the Evil Dead remake is supposed to be funny like Evil Dead 2 and I'm like what the fuck that shit is brutal as fuck and I couldn't get the imagery out of my head for like a week"
haha yeah what the fuck, the remake was far from funny. that is literally the only modern horror film i can think of off the top of my head that scared the shit out of me. |
Trebor.
10.22.14 | I feel like such a snob when people ask me if I like horror films and it comes out that I think most modern ones are shit, but it's pretty much true
I thought the Conjuring was fun, it didn't really scare me but it was good
|
Hyperion1001
10.22.14 | i guarantee you that movie had no political agenda and was just made because the producers/director didnt give a shit. the cast has come out many times and talked about what a terror it was to work on that film.
trust me ive seen just about every horror film under the sun and its not that good. if you have to kill actual animals to get in your shitty shock value then youre movie sucks. |
lyzakthellama
10.22.14 | Man, I love the evil dead remake actually |
Intothepit
10.22.14 | Go see Annabelle. It's inntentionally hilarious. |
Vader
10.22.14 | The conjuring bored me to tears to be honest. I'm not a fan of these dime-a-dozen haunted house movies. Seems like an infinite well for modern day horror flicks
Hyperion: thanks for the heads up, I may well check it out anyway. I've seen some pretty disturbing horrors (Martyrs comes to mind), and if the killings are in a purely hunter-gatherer sense like LordePots says, it might not be so offputting (plus I've seen some rather disturbing videos on the fur trade in asia and on american slaughter houses; that shit'll keep you up at night), depends on the context. I've written down the ones you recommend too though |
Hyperion1001
10.22.14 | the only good modern horror films (we're talking post 2000) i can think of off the top of my head are:
the descent (easily the best one)
28 days later
the house of the devil
maniac
the lords of salem
let the right one in
the hills have eyes
dog soldiers
[REC]
other than that, good luck |
Vader
10.22.14 | Hmmm, it's interesting that you and LordePots have completely diverging opinions on this. I'm probably not as huge a horror buff as either of you (I've seen maybe 70 horror films in total) but it's still one of my favourite genres, if not my favourite. |
Trebor.
10.22.14 | fuck i wanna see REC
|
Vader
10.22.14 | Ah dammit, I knew I was missing something from here: The Descent. I was shocked by how good The Descent when I saw it in theaters way back. I'm a guy who's typically pretty disappointed with the big-screen horror movies because they're usually so generic, but that one genuinely creeped me out. Let The Right One In is one of my top 10 favourite movies of all time but I see it as more of a beautiful drama-driven movie than a horror movie, if that makes any sense? At it's core it's a tale of love and there's a certain ambient undercurrent that makes the whole thing so visually stunning and heartwarming |
Hyperion1001
10.22.14 | ive only seen [REC] one time and it was halloween night in 10th grade alone with my friends in my house
to this day its the scariest shit ive ever seen and i want to preserve that memory so ive been reluctant to watch it again |
Vader
10.22.14 | [REC] kept me on the edge of my seat the first time I saw it. Then I saw that American adaptation which was basically a complete ripoff. Like, frame for frame |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | "i guarantee you that movie had no political agenda and was just made because the producers/director didnt give a shit. the cast has come out many times and talked about what a terror it was to work on that film.
trust me ive seen just about every horror film under the sun and its not that good. if you have to kill actual animals to get in your shitty shock value then youre movie sucks."
since when does the 'agenda' of any given artist in any way effect its impact? people write entire essays on why some author made the drapes blue in a room when they just happened to be fucking blue
"trust me" you're opinion isn't universal and there are tonnes of people that love that film, including myself, and whether the political agenda was intentional or not i see all kinds of brilliant social commentaries in it. And in that context its not for 'shock value' so don't even bring that up, especially when we are talking about horror films, thats a fucking laugh. |
lyzakthellama
10.22.14 | I dont know man, I thought the lords of salem went downhill in the second half |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | "the only good modern horror films (we're talking post 2000) i can think of off the top of my head are:

[REC]

ive seen 90% of these and they were all fucking terrible, some horror film guru u are |
Vader
10.22.14 | No need to argue about it, you're obviously not going to convince each other of anything. I'll check it out regardless |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | "I dont know man, I thought the lords of salem went downhill in the second half"
lords of salem was the worst thing zombie has ever done by a landslide |
Vader
10.22.14 | I must not be as well versed in horror as I thought, because I would consider a good chunk of those to be among the best modern horror movies I've seen. 28 Days Later, The Descent, and especially Let the Right One In in particular. |
lyzakthellama
10.22.14 | I would actually agree except for halloween 2. I liked the beginning but it just wasted shit ton of potential |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | I wouldn't consider myself to be a horror film buff by any means to be honest... i've just seen a lot because i like subjecting myself to terrible movies for some reason and horror is the one genre that is absolutely full of them. on that note however, Let the Right One In is probably the only one on there that i thought wasn't bad |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | i haven't seen maniac or dog soldiers tho |
Kman418
10.22.14 | "the descent (easily the best one)"
i luv u |
Hyperion1001
10.22.14 | potsy when are you gonna stop doing this weird ironic trollbait bullshit and go back to being cool |
Kman418
10.22.14 | session 9 is also tight as hell tbh
theres only like 3 things in total that unnerved me more than the final 20 minutes of that movie |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | i dunno whenever you stop pretending you are Allah Muhammad of all media forms probably |
Hyperion1001
10.22.14 | yeah i always forget about session 9 it was pretty decent iirc. only saw it once though. |
Kman418
10.22.14 | lol when has hype done that |
Kman418
10.22.14 | honestly i still enjoy really shitty horror films a lot which is probably why i can stand to actively watch the genre but yeah the ones that are actually like quality movies and actually scary are p limited
also cause slashers and other equally dum subgenres like that are fun as hell |
betray
10.22.14 | I remember watching a movie on Netflix called 'The Shrine' which was pretty spooky. Maybe check that out |
Vader
10.22.14 | Some of the shittier ones are just the best though! The really campy, unintentionally hilarious ones. I got my hands on an arcade version of House of the Dead 2 and it is an absolute masterpiece of awfulness, from the voice-acting to animations. |
Hyperion1001
10.22.14 | lets not derail this thread into some sputnik drama bullshit, this has been a relatively good thread so far
its my fault for even bringing it up so lets just drop it |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | "also cause slashers and other equally dum subgenres like that are fun as hell"
sometimes all you want is to watch a really really shitty horror film.... which is about the only time netflix comes in handy |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | @hype aight |
Hyperion1001
10.22.14 | i agree shitty horror films are fun but i fucking hate this new trend of making them bad on purpose
bad films are only good when you know the people making them were clueless. |
Vader
10.22.14 | I don't think either of them are wrong; seems purely subjective to me. At any rate, it is a good thread, let's keep it going! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | "bad films are only good when you know the people making them were clueless."
this is why i couldn't watch more than the first 15 minutes of Sharknado yet i watched the entirety of Mother of Tears |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | Why did Dario even bother finishing that trilogy at that point goddamn |
Vader
10.22.14 | " bad films are only good when you know the people making them were clueless."
Agreed like 90% of the time. I saw a film years ago I think was called Black Sheep and I'm pretty sure the director was conscious of the fact that he was making an awful movie but it was still enjoyable. Kind of in the same way Sharknado is. Conversely, I despise a lot of movies that try to be bad in the way Sharknado tries, it has to be really funny to be worth it |
Veldin
10.22.14 | Amazing list and incredibly albums too! This should be featured for the sake of October and all that is unholy. |
Hyperion1001
10.22.14 | most slashers are dumb fun but there are some that are really fucking awesome
i just watched one the other night that was called curtains and it was beyond awesome. its was like this weird arthouse/trash cinema slasher that kicked ass
like imagine the italian giallo stuff but done in a very american slasher formula. |
betray
10.22.14 | but ye check shrine |
Vader
10.22.14 | Veldin: Thanks! How does it get featured? |
ShadowRemains
10.22.14 | as someone who has been interested in tornadoes since i was 4 years old
sharknado was the worst piece of dogshit |
Hyperion1001
10.22.14 | yeah mother of tears sucks bigtime but dario lost his touch in the early 90's so i wasnt expecting anything different
tbh as much as i love suspiria and inferno, opera is becoming my favorite of his stuff. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | @Vader dude Black Sheep was fucking awesome as fuck. But yeah, Sharknado, can't do it
also have u watched the other two films of the suspiria trilogy ? |
ShadowRemains
10.22.14 | and plus what happened to tara reid with age is just depressing |
Vader
10.22.14 | Aw come on, didn't any of you enjoy it even just a little? I saw a trend in movies being intentionally bad AFTER seeing Sharknado, maybe that's why I enjoy it |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | @hype suspiria was dope and even though i had mixed feelings about inferno it was still beautifully filmed so i'll back it but ive never seen opera so i might get on that |
Vader
10.22.14 | LordePots: I'm going to henceforth address you simply as 'Pots". Sound good? Anyway, I feel embarrassed saying this, but I didn't know there was a trilogy :S |
Trebor.
10.22.14 | intentionally funny bad movies are worse than hitler
you guys should check out the show Best of The Worst if you're interested in unintentionally funny bad movies |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | @betray if you are referring to this movie:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1341710/
I watched that about a year ago lol. so bad. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | @vader most people do anyways. and yeah it is, watch the second one "inferno" but whatever you do don't watch Mother of Tears it will ruin everything |
betray
10.22.14 | im no horror buff, haven't watched enough to determine good from bad tbh |
Vader
10.22.14 | Sweet, going to see if I can find Inferno right now |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | i thought the scene in all the fog and the statue was kind of cool but thats about it |
betray
10.22.14 | but anyways vader if you haven't seen it i'd say its probably at least worth a watch |
betray
10.22.14 | "i thought the scene in all the fog and the statue was kind of cool but thats about it"
dont really even remember much besides that, just know that i didnt absolutely hate it which i rare for horror
the most recent evil dead movie was cool too but i havent seen any of the others |
Hyperion1001
10.22.14 | inferno rules a lot, you have to watch argento films like bloody stage productions but once you get over the fact that everything is purposefully made to look like a set they're like the coolest shit ever |
Vader
10.22.14 | Betray: Will do! I've already added quite a bit to my list of movies to download. I'm going to have to double my efforts to try to see them all before the month's out |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | everyone loved the conjuring but i didnt think it was that great |
TychoBrahe
10.22.14 | A lot of the really good serious ones I would have named have been listed already. Don't think I saw anyone mention Fulci's work (Zombi, City of the Living Dead,etc.). High Tension. Black Christmas. John Carpenter's The Thing. If you like asian horror Audition is good, 3 extremes was pretty cool too (3 shorts from different directors).
Seems like you like some of the funny and campy stuff so you may wanna check out:
Slaughter High
Chopping Mall
Cabin Fever
Basketcase
Bloodsucking Freaks
Murder Party (this one is really underrated imo)
Trick r' Treat
Dale and Tucker vs. Evil
|
Vader
10.22.14 | Pots: I'm with you on The Conjuring. Pretty by-the-numbers if you ask me. Same thing with Insidious
What do you guys think of Deep Red? |
Vader
10.22.14 | Muchas gracias, Tycho. I've seen The Thing and love it. Forgot to mention that one too. You're the first person I've seen to mention 3 Extremes, which I loved, and Cabin Fever I saw a long time and enjoyed, right up until the end but I can't for the life of me remember why now |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | i liked the first insidious better than the conjuring and better than most 2010's horror movies i've seen but thats not saying much. and the sequel was retarded haha. havent seen deep red |
Hyperion1001
10.22.14 | pretty much anything argento did until about 1987 is worth watching. his giallo stuff is honestly just as good as his later more horror/supernatural films
tenebre and deep red are both top 5 giallos |
Vader
10.22.14 | When it comes to horror, I usually talk circles around my friends. Seems like I'm a bit out of my element here haha.
Pots: The second Insidious? Didn't even know there was one =/
|
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.22.14 | @vader there sure is! now u can go see what happens after that crippling cliffhanger in insidious 1!!! |
TychoBrahe
10.22.14 | Shit, almost forgot. Cemetery Man is pretty good and funny and seriously has one of the most beautiful chicks ever getting naked in it. |
EyesWideShut
10.22.14 | was watching Last House on the Left 72' last night.. loved it.. |
TychoBrahe
10.22.14 | ^yeah, Craven's version is good. Still haven't seen the remake.
I think Santa Sangre may qualify as horror. Or at least it's a good excuse to watch one of Alejandro Jodorowsky's films. I always think of that film when I hear Mastodon's Bedazzled Fingernails for some reason. |
Kman418
10.22.14 | have any of u seen eden lake tho
holy shit |
Davil667
10.22.14 | Good stuff on here. Besides the obligatory classics I enjoyed Drag Me To Hell quite a lot. |
TalonsOfFire
10.22.14 | House of the Devil is a great throwback 80's horror film from a few years ago |
Vader
10.22.14 | Drag Me to Hell is just silly fun. Could watch it over and over again.
Tycho: I love Santa Sangre!
Talons: I'll make sure to check that out |
TychoBrahe
10.22.14 | Hell yeah, man. Santa Sangre >>>>'s
Also co-sign checking out House of the Devil. |
