Lengthy Discographies Worth Exploring

Some artists have a really steep entry curve to discuss them just because of how many albums you need to get through. Here's some of the discographies I've gone through and am glad I took the time for
1Ozric Tentacles
Arborescence

Any of you remember that 'Ozric Tentacles Ranked' list that got posted a couple of years ago? The following 3 months were probably the most psychedelic of my life, I just jammed their entire catalogue on a loop, they're obscenely consistent with quality but every album has a little something unique to it that lets it stand out.
2Ozric Tentacles
Become The Other

That Wob Glass FUNK holy shit, probably their catchiest album and the easiest entry point (alongside Curious Corn).
3Ozric Tentacles
Jurassic Shift

Their most psychedelic outing. Feng Shui and the title track are two of the best songs they've put to record.
4Ozric Tentacles
Sliding Gliding Worlds

And even their earliest music is golden. Much more chill prog than their future albums, but it's a refreshing change of pace when you're listening to all of their albums on a loop, they definitely stand out.
5Ozric Tentacles
Waterfall Cities

Even though they've gone downhill since Waterfall Cities, I still wouldn't give a single album below a 3. There's some appeal in everything they've released.
6Buckethead
Colma

Probably the hardest artist to get into. 43 albums and counting this year alone, but boy can he write. Admittedly I haven't grinded through everything, but there's some real gold hiding amongst his discography. This is a sombre affair he recorded for his mother to listen to while recovering from cancer, lots of feels up in here.
7Buckethead
Look Up There

One of his more impressive soloing pieces. 30 minutes of shredding with a purpose, lots of prog influences and enough diversity to keep the listener enthralled from start to finish.
8Buckethead
Crime Slunk Scene

Soothsayer is just incredible. There's a few good songs on here but Soothsayer just blows them all out of the water, one of the best songs he's ever recorded.
9Buckethead
Electric Sea

Same goes for Swomee Swan on here. Great, laid back guitar on this album but he just nails the tone with that song.
10Buckethead
Decoding the Tomb of Bansheebot

And some nice riffing diversity on display here, mixing it up from the normal soloing and just showcasing his metal chops (for the most part, until that gorgeous closer). This year has seen some incredible releases from him (Hold Me Forever, Pitch Dark, Claymation Courtyard to name a few) though he's been getting attacked with wild 2 ratings lately. Don't let that dissuade you, the highly rated albums are truly worth checking out.
11Tom Waits
Rain Dogs

I wanted to limit myself to one 'classic' artist that people can roll their eyes over, and while almost going for Bowie or Judas Priest, I settled on Tom Waits. Rain Dogs is pretty widely regarded as a classic album, but there's so much more gold to be found.
12Tom Waits
Mule Variations

My favorite Waits release, this was my first Tom experience and I was hooked from the start. Come On Up To The House is an achievement he hasn't matched since. House Where Nobody Lives is also up there with his most emotionally moving pieces.
13Tom Waits
Nighthawks At The Diner

Skipped over often because of the 'live album' title, but an essential experience for Waits fans. Eggs and Sausage in particular is phenomenal and not found elsewhere in his discography.
14Tom Waits
Orphans

A crazy, ambitious release split into 3 long discs, each containing a different side of Tom's personality. Bastards, Bawlers and Brawlers.
15Tom Waits
Closing Time

Humble beginnings, while not containing the grandeur and experimentation of future releases, is a quaint and easily enjoyable listen that breezes by before you know it. An extensive series of releases, but well worth the time and effort. Even the oft-derided Black Rider is simply average, with all his other releases on the better side of good.
16Sleeping At Last
Ghosts

A simple alt-rock band that has slowly expanded their influences and changed into something completely different. Their major-label debut was a stock-standard alt-rock affair, but stands out thanks to Ryan O'Neal's vocals (which only got better with time).
17Sleeping At Last
Keep No Score

With their second release, significant orchestral influences appeared and began to shape the songs. An affable, endearing album that's easy to love, with a big step-up in the vocal department.
18Sleeping At Last
Storyboards

Definitely their crowning achievement. Big step up in diversity (ukelele's, frolicking classical sections, stripped-back ballads) but they don't go over the top like they occasionally did on the previous album.
19Sleeping At Last
Yearbook - October

Most recently, the lead singer has made the band a solo effort, shutting out band members contributions until they left, but is still releasing fantastic music. The Yearbook Project consisted of an EP per month to reflect the emotions the changing seasons invoked, and he did a stellar job of it.
20Sleeping At Last
Atlas - Land

And then he embarked on another 6 EP project, this time creating "a collection of musical projections of the inner workings of life". Maybe a little pretentious in concept, but musically he took another step up from the yearbook project and released some of his most diverse and appealing EPs.
