Tool Rankings Day 4: Lateralus

Day 4 of my Tool Rankings, today is "Lateralus" Tool's magnum opus and my rpersonal all-time favorite album. Once I finish Tool's discography I will start day 1 of rmy Mastodon Rankings.

Lateralus

Disposition- The tracks I chose for 9 and 8 serve basically as the bread for "Reflection"'s meat.
These three tracks really do belong together, but at atleast 4 minutes each, and with a
combined runtime of around 27 minutes, I felt that they should just be kept separate.
Disposition is the opener to Reflection, it is haunting, beautiful, and a great way to prepare
you for the beast that comes after it.

Lateralus

Triad- an instrumental piece by Tool that serves as the epilogue to Tool's strongest album, and
one of the greatest albums of the 21st century. This song is a fun and interesting adventure
and a worthwhile way to end a great album.

Lateralus

Ticks and Leeches- All I have to say about this track to let you know how brutal it is, is that
Maynard was not able to sing for several weeks upon the completion of recording of this song.
Tool has also only ever played this track live once, because of how hard it is on Maynard to
sing. 9 minutes of the most blood curtlingly vicious screams you'll ever hear. Oh right, and
Danny Carey just has a field day in this one. If you like drums, listen to this song.

Lateralus

The Patient- This is the second track on the album, The Grudge left you sweating right off the
bat, and this song serves to lure you into a false sense of security. The beginning is rather
soft, and makes you think you're going to get a momentary break, but boy are you wrong.
Halfway in this song breaks into another viciously heavy adventure, I just hope the 2 minutes
of softness in the beginning were enough of a rest, because you'll need all the energy you can
get to finish this album.

Lateralus

The Grudge- Oh boy this song, it kills me to have to place it this low, but on an album as
downright beastly as this, some great songs are bound to end up low in the rankings. This is
the album opener, and boy is it ever a dousey. One of Tool's heaviest and fastest songs, this
one is about letting go of grudges and moving past former transgressions, which is a common
theme in the album (see Lateralus). Just a gorgeous display of what a mix of ferocity, anger,
musical talent, and enthusiasm can do. And of course, I have to mention the nearly 30 second
scream by Maynard near the end. Chills.... just chills.....

Lateralus

Reflection- This is just a beautiful song. If you needed an example of how well Maynard's voice
functions as an instrument, here it is. In a world where we couldn't differentiate vocals from
music due to lyrics being present you wouldn't be able to tell that Maynard's voice wasn't
some form of exotic instrument. Just a beautiful, beautiful epic song that will leave you with
chills after each and every listen.
3Tool
Lateralus

Parabol/Parabola- I'm putting these two tracks together because I feel that it is necessary to
listen to both in order to get the full effect of the song. "Parabol" is a slow gradual introduction
to this song, Maynard lends his beautiful soft vocals in order to set the stage for the beast that
is "parabola" and when the guitar opens up for "Parabola" you had better hope you didn't turn
up your volume while Parabol was on, because you're in for a suprise. Oh man when that
guitar hits it hits hard. Anyway, this song is magnificent, the gradual progression over the 10
or so minutes it takes place are second to none, starts out as a slow soft haunting journey and
ends in one of Tool's heaviest tracks guitar-wise.
2Tool
Lateralus

Schism- Of course this had to be top 3. One of Tool's most famous songs, it is a beautiful and
haunting track full of immense creativity and constant time signature variations. The time
signatures in the verses switches from a 5/8 to a 7/8 and comes together to form a 12/8 in
the chorus, hence the name "schism". The complexity in a song like this is hard to ignore,
easily one of Tool's best songs.
1Tool
Lateralus

Lateralus- While "Schism" was easily Tool's most famous track from this album, "Lateralus" is
the clear winner here for me. This is a perfect song in every way, 9 minutes of pure adrenaline
rush. Each band member takes complete control of the song at one point or another, and the
progression from the start of the song to the final moments is epic. Not to mention the lyrics
were written in the fibonacci sequence. This is truly Tool's best song on their best album.
Spiral out.
