| Favourite Movies (That Don't Feature Usher)
Being everything but a cineast my knowledge in that field is fairly limited to say the least. Still, I thought I just make a Top 10. Maybe someone wants to talk/complain about it or I even get a death threat (still haven't gotten any and I'm surprised by that). Here we go. | 10 | | Marco Beltrami I, Robot
Not a good start, I know. But it's actually my favourite Will Smith movie and I think it's quite underrated. Besides the stunning visuals the whole theme of what makes one human (even if it's just pseudo-philosophy in a very basic way) works really great, and of all the Smith movies with him as that witty, but stupid action hero this has his best performance. | 9 | | Brad Fiedel Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Not too much to say, since it's already hailed by almost everyone. The lighter tone of the movie with all the Furlong - Schwarzenegger scenes are perfectly balanced with the somewhat darker scenes and actually this is an improvement over the first one on pretty much every level. The acting of Arnold and Linda Hamilton has gotten better big time, Patrick is the perfect new Terminator and, of course, the action scenes profit from the budget. Overall the equation is quite simple: Terminator vs. Terminator > Terminator vs. human | 8 | | Hans Zimmer Gladiator (Soundtrack)
I seriously doubt Russell Crowe had a movie, where he played better than here. His character is a bit one-dimensional (basically revenge being his one and only goal), but portrayed in an impressive way, never being too kitschy or too much of a boring action hero. Apart from that it obviously is dependent on the great setting and the whole feeling it provides and on its perfect German dub (for one time it's actually better in that unmelodic language), which conveys all that a lot better than the original. It's just really good at painting that picture of the Roman empire (historically inaccurate of course) and remaining faithful to the classic epic films, while improving where possible with modern methods. | 7 | | Danny Elfman Good Will Hunting
Some people might find it boring, but I know hardly any movie that feels so honest. That's mostly Robin Williams merit, playing brilliantly in every single scene, delivering the best of his many tragicomical performances. So, even if there isn't too much happening throughout the movie, all those monologues and disputes are thought-provoking in some way and even more moving. Many Oscars are debatable, but Williams really deserved it for that role. | 6 | | Joe Hisaishi Castle In The Sky
Hayao Miyazaki is a freakin' genius. Only know four of his movies yet and the high standard of them is unbelievable (his work tops every other animation studio). Castle In The Sky is not his best, but it's probably his most focused, having a fast paced storyline and as always it creates a unique world that is so detailed, so beautiful, just so realistic. Especially the castle looks so damn good with those "robots" to guard it (most of them already "dead") and that garden in its center. Oh, yeah, the characters are great too, probably his most likeable (tied with Chihiro) and having that childlike innocence that gives the quite dark story a lighter tone. Well, it's Miyazaki, what more to say? | 5 | | John Williams Saving Private Ryan
Tom Hanks had quite a streak throughout the 90's and early 00's, where he could do almost anything and it worked great. So it isn't easy to choose, if you've got Forrest Gump, Philadelphia or Cast Away to choose from. But what makes this so brilliant, besides dialogues and visuals being almost completely free from pathos, is that there isn't one guy in that movie that isn't playing his part great. It's not like most of it is on Hanks' shoulders, but rather a perfect cast working in every way possible. Of course it helps that war is in no way glorified and moral and emotional questions aren't just thrown out with some patriotic crap. Plus, great soundtrack. Plus, the realistic look. Should be quite enough. | 4 | | John Powell & Harry Gregson-Williams Chicken Run
Out of place? Nah, just a little bit. Dreamworks is definitely the loser in the CGI duel with Pixar, but that's due to their inconsistency, not because they can't deliver. And this is, maybe together with Antz and Shrek 2, their most hilarious effort. While Wallace & Gromit's stop motion look is already great, these Chicken and especially their arch enemy are designed just so brilliantly, looking as silly as possible, that you almost have to laugh just because of that. Not enough? Than some of the pop culture references and those scenes, where you have to shake your head and laugh at the same time, will do the job. Silly animation movie literally in the best possible way. | 3 | | Anne Dudley American History X
I remember seeing that with 12 or so years and not really getting it, though I found it great anyway. Watching it again a few weeks ago, its quality was even more obvious, featuring an unbelievable performance by Edward Norton and so damn disturbing scenes that it just works. Difficult to describe actually, since it's not exactly tears, goosebumps and everything but laughs that come to mind, but this movie doesn't leave you cold in whatever way. The only thing I probably would've changed would be the ending, doesn't hurt by any means though, still perfect. | 2 | | Howard Shore The Two Towers
No explanation needed, pretty much the least imaginative thing, but it just is that good. Actually it stands for both Two Towers and Return Of The King (would've been 4, but I only wanted one in the list). Perfect on every base, some of the most memorable scenes and best visuals ever seen on screen and although I'm not really the fantasy guy even the story and the characters are just flawless (except for Sam, that idiot). | 1 | | Joe Hisaishi Princess Mononoke
As I said, 7 isn't his best. And I don't dare to describe that movie insufficiently. I'll just say: P E R F E C T ! ! ! | |

09.25.14 | So??? | DrJohn
09.25.14 | My fav Miyazaki are "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" and "Spirited Away". Also Terminator (1984) >>> Terminator II | KrazyKris
09.25.14 | Yeah, really like both of them, although I think they are slightly worse than 1 and 7. "Nausicaa" is a tad bit too much on the fantasy and environment trip for me and "Spirited Away" is the one with the most love for detail visually and it looks amazing, but it's a bit too adorable, so to say.
And I haven't watched Terminator for quite some time, but I remember that I can't stand Reese. That's pretty much its only flaw. | DikkoZinner
09.25.14 | Watch out for that curb. | AliW1993
09.25.14 | Except for Sam?!??!
American History X, Saving Private Ryan and T2 are some of my favourites too, along with The LOTR trilogy.
My #1 would have to be high fidelity, with In Bruges and Shawshank not far behind. | KrazyKris
09.25.14 | God, he's just so... I don't know, unbearable, especially in Two Towers, but his role in it is rather small thankfully. It gets better in the third, but he has hardly any line that isn't full of pathos and kitsch and unlike Mortensen or Bloom he just can't deliver it in a way that doesn't make him look like a douchebag | Froot
09.25.14 | Agree wholeheartedly with 10. | KrazyKris
09.25.14 | You're my hero, Froot! | zakalwe
09.25.14 | Along with The Goonies, 6 is my ultimate childhood nostalgia classic. | Gameofmetal
09.25.14 | Good list. Samwise Gamgee is a great hobbit tho! | KrazyKris
09.25.14 | zak, you making a positive comment doesn't feel right at all (just to respond, can't think of one in particular, but A Christmas Carol or any Spencer & Hill movie come to mind)
can't you just be the grumpy you and bitch around about how idiotic we all (and the Brits in particular) are | Glassjawx
09.26.14 | Change the ending to American History X?? it was such a powerful ending, I was in tears man | Rowan5215
09.26.14 | Good Will Hunting is crazy amazing | Wolfhorde
09.26.14 | Fuck the hobbits. (yeah, I went there)
Still think 1 is vastly overrated naturalist bullshit in the guise of anime. 3 and 8 are cool. The other stuff is pretty much standard and has lost most of its charm to me.
Some good shenanigans:
Super Troopers
No Country for Old Men
Valhalla Rising
Iron Man 1+2, Cap. America : Winter Soldier (much better than the first)
Smoking Aces
Snatch/Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Sin City 1+2
Hot Fuzz/The World's End
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Django Unchained/Inglourious Basterds
Big Lebowski
Boondock Saints
Gran Torino
Tombstone
Zombieland
Falling Down | Rowan5215
09.26.14 | "Hot Fuzz/The World's End
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Snatch/Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels"
I love you
"Fuck the hobbits."
I hate you | tempest--
09.26.14 | do the truffle shuffle zak | Wolfhorde
09.26.14 | If I want a chubby guy fawning over his better looking friend all the time while calling him "Mr" I might as well just watch gay porn. I mean, hey instead of giving the ring any of the people probably better suited to venture into enemy territory let's just give it to two hobbits that have no experience in scouting, fighting or anything of the like. Not to mention the inherent disadvantage of being a hobbit. | KrazyKris
09.26.14 | ~Still think 1 is vastly overrated naturalist bullshit~
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, you @€$#§$@!!!
~If I want a chubby guy fawning over his better looking friend all the time while calling him "Mr" I might as well just watch gay porn~
Much better | Rowan5215
09.26.14 | "If I want a chubby guy fawning over his better looking friend all the time while calling him "Mr" I might as well just watch gay porn."
You're right the two are basically inseparable concepts
and you seem to be ignoring the fact that there are two other hobbits aka Merry and Pippin who are fucking BRILLIANT CHARACTERS | KrazyKris
09.26.14 | That's right, both definitely in the Top 10 of LOTR characters, but Sam fits the description quite well. | Rowan5215
09.26.14 | Pippin = amazing
Merry = possibly more amazing
Sam = awesome dude who has one of the best scenes in the whole trilogy
Frodo = dipshit
so 3/4 positives to the Hobbits, just tipping the scale | KrazyKris
09.26.14 | Which Sam scene is one of the best???
And Frodo isn't as bad actually, never really liked him, but I can't say Wood didn't play him well. | Rowan5215
09.26.14 | The bit when him and Frodo are talking about stories and heroes in fairytales. Its just so fucking brilliant. And I thought Wood was pretty shite as Frodo to be honest which is a shame because he's great in every other film I've seen him in | KrazyKris
09.26.14 | Ok, that one isn't bad, I'd say best hobbit scenes for me are:
Pippin - singing for Denethor 5 / 5
Merry - "speech" at the Ent council 5 / 5
Sam - don't know really, maybe the scene where he yells at Faramir 4 / 5
Frodo - the "I don't remember anything" scene at Mt. Doom 5 / 5
and I wouldn't say it was Wood's fault, it's rather that the character comes off as pretty stupid in pt 2 & 3 | MO
09.26.14 | 8 is a fucking modern day masterpiece | KrazyKris
09.26.14 | Yep, although there's one scene that just looks atrociously bad (just from the modern day perspective). When he arrives at the Colosseum with the other Gladiators it's pretty much the worst use of CGI in a great movie I know | zakalwe
09.26.14 | My fave hobbit scene is the one where Samwise gets arseholed on brandywine ale and finger bangs Rosie in the Prancing Pony Car-Park. | KrazyKris
09.26.14 | That's good ol' zak, how was that with "perverted sense of humour" in your personality test? | zakalwe
09.26.14 | Off the chart. | Rowan5215
09.26.14 | " Pippin - singing for Denethor 5 / 5"
this fucking scene dude | KrazyKris
09.26.14 | bad or good? | Rowan5215
09.26.14 | one of the most perfect scenes in history | Rowan5215
09.26.14 | so, I guess you could say good | KrazyKris
09.26.14 | then I'm relieved | Rowan5215
09.26.14 | Boromir's death is my fave though | KrazyKris
09.26.14 | Best scene in the whole trilogy? So difficult to find just one, I'd say the "last march of the Ents" would be mine, though the beginning of the Helm's Deep battle is up there too. | Rowan5215
09.26.14 | Boromir's death is my favourite scene of all time :D but yeah Helm's Deep is some pretty next-level shit as well | Chrisjon89
09.26.14 | been a long time since I've seen T2. as a kid I remember preferring it to the original. saw that again recently and aside from a few very dated 80s synth/drum machine parts of the score which kinda take the edge off some chase scenes a bit, it holds up pretty well. it's a good concept and Arnold rules in that. |
