| Truly Epic Songs I've Been Digging Lately
Does what it says on the tin... | 1 | | Pendulum The Tempest
First half - rock-meets-drum'n'bass, really catchy, nice changes between sections... Last part - fucking epic synth chords that make me feel like I'm stood on a hilltop at sunset in the rain with my hands thrown in the air like some kind of fucking nature-boy! | 2 | | Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Tupelo
Pretty much defines the word "atmospheric" - eerie rainstorm samples, that simple but oh-so-effective tribal bassline, Cave's spooky dead-man vocals, and those spine chilling harmonies. TUPELOOOOOOOOO-OOOH!!! | 3 | | Isis Firdous E Bareen / Garden of Light
To me, these two songs kinda go hand in hand, and despite many people telling me that "In the Absence of Truth" is Isis' weakest album, this one-two combo tells me these people are brick-eared fucks. One emotional crescendo after the next, and never less than totally gripping. | 4 | | Devin Townsend Life
Not an epic in the usual long-ass kinda way, but that lovely intro melody giving way into a lead melody so fucking sublime, the build up of beautiful vocal harmonies after each verse, and THAT chorus... This never fails to raise the hairs on the back of my neck... | 5 | | Iron Maiden Hallowed Be Thy Name
From the spooky and forboding intro, through the galloping rhythms, massive harmonies, and Brucey's maniacal wails, right to the crescendo of awesomeness that is Dave and Adrian's solos, this song is every inch the perfect metal epic, and this list would be seriously lacking without it! | 6 | | Against Me! Miami
This may sound like kind of a weird choice, but the song's always struck me as being very much like a West-End musical crammed into four minutes, with gritty up-front lyrics replacing the usual cheesiness. | 7 | | Baroness Rays on Pinion
If Thin Lizzy were brought up on a reservation in a rugged mountain range in the deep south of America, this is what they'd have sounded like. | 8 | | Between the Buried and Me Colors
Fuck it, I'll get some shit for this, but one huge epic song is what they set out to achieve, and despite the odd shaky transition, by and large they've achieved it. | 9 | | Black Sabbath War Pigs
Another obvious one, I know, but from the air-raid sirens that kick it off to the simple-yet-inspiring instrumental at the end ("Luke's Wall"), this manages to fit the bill of an epic, whilst also being obscenely catchy throughout! | 10 | | Botch Man the Ramparts
Combining elements of post-metal with the most brutal noisecore/metal/whateveryouwannacallit, and that absolutely chilling monk-chant part, this is like a huge bitter "FUCK OFF" written in fire across the sky. | 11 | | Jeff Buckley Grace
I really shouldn't need to explain this one. If that huge haunting wail doesn't slap you in the face and make you drop everything and stare at the speakers, then you should probably check your pulse, as there's a fair chance you're dead. | 12 | | Mr. Bungle California
Yeah, so I'm including a whole album rather than just a song, but seriously, everything about California is mind-boggling - the twists and turns, the emotions, the way every single piece of instrumentation and vocalization sounds like it was put there for a reason, and that airy production that seems to capture the feeling of heat haze and sea breezes within the music itself. | 13 | | Bon Jovi Dry County
Of all the bands who I'd expect to be able to pull off a 10minute stormer like this, Bon Jovi would be about the last - their forte is short, sweet, catchy pop-rock numbers. But this song is just HUGE. The melodies (especially the piano parts) are beautiful, that little descending riff leading into the wailing solo, and again, the sheer catchiness of it. Fact is, it doesn't seem like 10 minutes have passed when you've listened to it. A fucking beautiful song. | 14 | | Rocket from the Crypt Glazed (R.I.P. Live Performance)
Just watch the DVD, this is a truly amazing band giving it their ALL, and going out with a HUGE bang. | 15 | | Circle Takes the Square Interview at the Ruins
Possibly the darkest, most depressing, emotionally heavy, and crushing piece of music I've ever heard. Pretty heavy going, not an album I can listen to a lot, but when I do, this is the highlight. | |
Electric City
