| Top 10 Symphonic/gothic/power Metal Bands
Do you like the fast, fantastical and anthemic rrnature of power metal? The remotionalism of rGothic metal? The orchestral rtake with rsymphonic metal? A blend of rthe three? Then rthis one is for you. Power rmetal started with rthe band Halloween in rthe 80's and Gothic and rsymphonic in the 90's rwith their own rmovements. | 1 | Nightwish
Formed in Kitee Finland in 1996, Symphonic and Power metal band Nightwish
has been dominating
European charts and is the third most prolific band to come out of Finland.
The band has since
undergone a total of three lead vocalist changes. | 2 | Evanescence
Evanescence was formed in Little Rock Arkansas in 1995 and is likely the
best gothic metal band to
date. Sadly, they have been on hiatus since 2012. | 3 | Epica
The symphonic metal band Epica, formed in 2002 dominates their genre. They
have high emphasis
on their symphonic sound as well as make use of death growls. Their songs
largely deal with
philosophical topics, including science, religion, and world events. | 4 | Halloween
Halloween, formed in 1984 in Hamburg Germany, practically started power
metal. This makes them a
strong candidate for the best in the genre. | 5 | HammerFall
Formed in Gothenburg Sweden in 1993, HammerFall is one of the best examples
of power
metal and one of the best in the genre. Check them out for yourself. | 6 | Kamelot
Kamelot formed in Tampa Florida in 1991. They have a blend of power and
symphonic
metal, and have had three vocalists over their lifespan. | 7 | Within Temptation
Formed in 1996 in Waddinxveen in The Netherlands, Within Temptation is a
prime example of symphonic
metal, though they were more gothic in their early days. Their most recent
studio album, Hydra, had a
number of guest artists, including former Nightwish vocalist Tarja Turunen. | 8 | Lacuna Coil
Italian goth metal band Lacuna Coil formed in Milan in 1994. They have dual
vocalists, and a balance
between male and female vocals, along with a mid tempo, providing a melodic,
detached sound. Much
of the band's recent material, however, sees a heavier and more down-tuned
style, with more bass
and guitar. | 9 | Symphony X
Symphony X was formed in 1994 in Middletown New Jersey. Take your pick;
progressive metal, power
metal or symphonic metal, and they are masterful at all three. | 10 | Dragonforce
Dragonforce. Yeah. Formed in 1999 in London, you have a power/speed style as
well a tendency to use
electronic sounds to have a retro videogame inspired sound. This gave them a
number of nicknames;
my favorite being Nintendo Metal. | |

09.15.14 | 1, 3, 6, 9 are good picks. Needs Blind Guardian and Gamma Ray though. I'd throw Dragonland and
Avantasia in there too. | Rik VII
09.15.14 | 3, 4, 6, 9 are awesome. 2 and 8 are kinda out of place.
list needs Angra, Blind Guardian, and Sonata Arctica. | Evatallica
11.26.14 | Evanescence is far too high lol | Snowdog808
02.09.15 | Plenty of good ones, though I would add Blind Guardian [2], Manowar, Jag Panzer, and Rhapsody (of Fire). Fates Warning in their John Arch days was a nice blend of power and prog too. |
