Funeral Obsession

Some of you might be aware of my obsession with doom, namely funeral doom metal and while I won't say no to certain genre hybrids these are the albums that have stuck with me as the pinnacle of what modern doom has to offer. I'll also mention this list won't cater to "Sabbath-doom" rather it's a focus on what the tag means for today's metal.
1Shape Of Despair
Angels of Distress

If you're going to play doom, have a band name that shouts mental agony right?
Jarno's vocals will feature on this list a number of times, points to who-ever knows
them all.
2Eye Of Solitude
Canto III

Between Sui Caedere and Canto III, there's very little wrong with how Eye Of
Solitude approach their death/doom. Daniel's deep growls blend theme and
aggression together seamlessly. With another EP yet to drop sometime this year it's
a wonder how these guys can bring such a level of consistency to the genre.
3Ataraxie
L Etre et La Nausee

L Etre et La Nausee is the best modern day doom can offer. A big statement
backed only by the album's pure ingenuity, bringing the best of torn atmospheres,
harsh tones and excellent compositions, Ataraxie's magnum opus sat as my Album
Of The Year and not by a small amount. These are not short tracks, rather sonic
agony stretched into a majestic statement.
4Until Death Overtakes Me
Prelude To Monolith
5Evoken
Atra Mors

Rather over-looked after its release. Evoken are one of those ever consistent acts
that should be a staple in any doom diet.
6The Fall of Every Season
Amends
7Doom:VS
Dead Words Speak

This year's Earthless sees improveent on the former Draconian master. If you like
anything mentioned above you should continue with this ethereal display of funeral
doom.
8Draconian
Turning Season Within

I mentioned this above, it deserves a proper place on this list.
9 Clouds
Doliu

My current Album Of The Year, with members from Shape Of Despair, Eye Of
Solitude, reading like a who's who in the doom genre.

10Dying Sun
Transcendence

More modern releases like this will make my world go 'round.
11Under The Sun
Under The Sun
12 Venowl
Patterns of Failure

Some of my favourite sounds come into play on this record. Depressive black metal,
raw and unyielding, intertwine perfectly with the funeral doom soundscape.
Aesthetically unpleasing.
13 Vin de Mia Trix
Once Hidden From Sight

From Hypnotic Dirge Records blending a more prog-laced psychedelia base to their
brand of funeral doom.
14 100 Years Of Solitude
A Blackened Earth

Solitude, solitary and by itself.
15Yhdarl
Ave Maria

16Thaw
Thaw

Blackened metal that only hints at my beloved doom. FFO: Dying Sun
17Talisman Stone
Lovecraftopolis

Female-led fuzz masterpiece with multiple bass-ness.
18Space Bong
The Death of Utopia

19 SOL
And the mouth of time is open

Drowning.cc
20 Profetus
All Seasons Die

Along the same vein as last year's Ataraxie
21 Luna
Ashes To Ashes

Has the same ideas as Monolithe, but lacks some of the execution. With a run-time
of 57 minutes it's but a casual listen.
22 Monolithe
III

Read above. IV may lack some of the grandeur found on this release but have you
ever thought of listening to these releases in order?
23Elysian Blaze
Blood Geometry

Got a spare two hours and ten minutes? Of course you do! FFO: The Fall Of Every
Season
24Catapult The Dead
All Is Sorrow

Really nice blokes. If you ever wanted something more accessible than other
releases in the genre, this is a good place to start.
25Black Wreath
A Pyre of Lost Dreams

More of that good 'ol marmalade.
