| In Memoriam: Edge Of Sanity
A solid death-metal outfit that started in 1989, and ended in 2003. Their debut release rrNothing But Death Remains didn't exactly move mountains, but their second release rrUnorthodox, with tracks like "Enigma" and "When All Is Said," possessed more originality. The rrSpectral Sorrows and Purgatory Afterglow continued the trend, so that by the release of rr1996's Crimson they were recording full-on progressive metal. Crimson was a 40-minute rrconcept album consisting entirely of one track, concerning a post-apocalyptic future in which rrmankind had lost the ability to breed. After one more album, 1997's Infernal, rrguitarist/vocalist/songwriter Dan Swano left the band, and his departure is generally rrassociated with a decline in quality in the band's material. Swano was replaced by Robert rrKarlsson of Pan-thy-monium (a side-project in which Swano was also involved), but after one rrmore album, the same year's Cryptic, the band split up. In 2003, Swano reconvened the routfit ras a one-man band and recorded a sequel to Crimson, naturally entitled Crimson II, rwhich is ralso a tribute album for the fallen death metal icon, Chuck Schuldiner. Immediately rafter, he rthrew in the towel, and decided to concentrate on other projects. | | 1 | | Edge of Sanity Crimson
Do I really need to say anything about it that's already been said?? It's one of the best albums ever made!! | | 2 | | Edge of Sanity Crimson II
Read above. | | 3 | | Edge of Sanity Purgatory Afterglow
Purgatory Afterglow finds the Swedish underdogs coming into their own five years after their formation. These guys are a well-
oiled machine, and this album has bite. "Black Tears", "Elegy" and "Twilight" are the top tracks here. | | 4 | | Edge of Sanity The Spectral Sorrows
Dan Swano and pals continue to evolve musically with "The Spectral Sorrows", an ugly beast of an album with plenty to offer for
those who are getting tired of the cliched American style. | | 5 | | Edge of Sanity Unorthodox
The band begins to stretch out of their clothes and experiment in many ways; "When All is Said" is one of the most memorable
songs in the EOS catalogue, and the best song on the album. Period. | | 6 | | Edge of Sanity Nothing But Death Remains
The first EOS album, and one of the weakest. Pure death metal, but what else? | | 7 | | Edge of Sanity Infernal
Following the critical success of "Crimson", one would expect Edge of Sanity to make another progressive behemoth. Sadly, it
was not to be. This is the album where nobody got along, and the music clearly reflects that. A true disappointment. | | 8 | | Edge of Sanity Cryptic
Edge of Sanity hits rock bottom with this trite, poorly-made clunker that borrows too much from "Jester Race" era In Flames,
and never taps into their past works. Why is it awful? Because Swano got kicked out before recording. Plain and smiple. | |
