Oh definitely, I mean when it comes to a single genre that typifies the frustrations and unheard voice of a generation 'math core' deserves it's place among blues, soul, rock n roll and hip hop.

coalesce were prob the first to release an actual mathcore album and botch were easily the most influential. calculating infinity was a remarkable album in mathcore for sure but it was pretty much its own thing
anyway the whole mathcore thing has nothing to do with the "zep of our generation" |

07.30.14 | what do you guys define as 'current generation'? cause to me (being 19 years old) bands like QOTSA, Foo Fighters or Mastodon (with members in their 40s) are a lot closer to my parents' generation than mine |
ChoccyPhilly
07.30.14 | Good question bro, and considering how long those bands have been around, it's difficult to truly say it's within our generation. I think the band of our generation would probably be our age and maybe have one or two albums and are yet to properly prove themselves. Take Alt-J for exmple |
DrJohn
07.30.14 | This may be a bit out of context when it pertains to “popularity” but I ll give it a go here. With regard to rock bands now and then, keep in mind; in recent years the shortcuts technology provides in studio or even in our personal computers, can transform mediocre/incomplete musicians to sound pretty much "legit". I am not talking about creativity or talent, I am talking about control they possess over their instruments and the compositions. Exceptions as noted, during the 60s and 70s a band should know how to play the tunes start to finish immaculately before getting in studio. Nowadays accessible hardware and software can construct music start to finish in studio even for bands starting out; young bands can skip the process of countless hours spent in their garages before even thinking of hitting the consoles... That being said, musically and cohesion-wise (perceiving a band as a single entity) to say the least, I find comparisons of this type incommensurable. WOW sry for the length...

07.30.14 | @DrJohn I agree with what you said, but surely that only relates to a sort of technical view point of music? I mean yes, you can programme notes and stuff, but if anything, the compositional skills are brought out more. With more and more bands sounding more "legit" as you say, being able to basically fake their playing skills, surely it's safe to say that there's a larger focus of actual songwriting and compositional capabilities? particularly with something like electronic music, where composition is everything |

07.30.14 | @ ChoccyPhilly
My comments pertain to the rock genre.
Putting the technical aspect aside, which I agree is not the most important factor in rock, punk, pop etc
Quoting myself; “young bands can skip the process of countless hours spent in their garages before even thinking of hitting the consoles >> cohesion-wise (perceiving a band as a single entity)” it matters, plus I think it hinders their capability as songwriters or composers. They skip a big chunk of the “learning curve” earlier bands had to climb. Imho it shows when they perform live… the number of bands being unable to replicate their studio efforts live is rapidly increasing.
