07.14.14 | Just downed a 22oz Bomber of RuinTen and felt like making a beer list. Aside from that I recommend Boulevard if you can get it. I'm from KC so it grows on trees around here. |

07.15.14 | I'm still mad that Stone (seemingly) doesn't export here. Still too many brews to try, just recently packed on some Belgian stuff - probably gonna dabble in that in addition to some more local stuff on that one. (maybe some Kölsch, Berliner Weiße and variations of Bock beers) |

07.16.14 | Bock's are some of my favorites honestly. Most of them are seasonal (spring time) where I live so I stocked up before summer. They kind of give you a bit of the High IBU hop flavor with the drinkability and color of a good Pale Lager.
Witbier is very much so an acquired taste in my opinion. It took me a while to get into them and at first I abhorred the style even though on paper it sound pretty good. I've gotten pretty into them lately though. The local KC brewing company brews a good one. It has won a lot of international awards. They call it ZON.
If you get a chance try and find a decent Tripel or Quad. They're definitely special occasion sort of beers as they are closer to the caliber of wine than beer but I've been enjoying that style lately. The Sixth Glass (which I rec'd above) is a world class Quad. |

07.16.14 | I don't know how American companies do Bocks, but we have some pretty traditional Bocks here - Schneider Weisse and Weihenstephan and some more local stuff. I haven't tried the latter yet, but the former has some REALLY good stuff. Very intense and aromatic flavor. What you're referring to seems to be specifically the Maibock, though. That one is usually a seasonal with stronger hop flavor and less ABV - a good "summer brew".
I actually don't remember whether I've tried Witbier yet, I'm not entirely certain whether the Hoegaarden I had classifies. But from what I've gathered it's somewhat similar to our German Weizenbier which can be both good and bad.
Also, trust me - in Germany I have absolutely zero problems finding Belgian beers, they're actually some of the most bang for your back craft beers because they're almost as cheap as domestics. I actually have quite a bit of Belgian stuff lying around, which I'll take with me on a trip. A Westmalle dubble and triple, Hoegaarden's Grand Cru, Piraat (Triple), St. Bernardus Abt. 12 (Quadrupel), Kasteel Rouge (cherry lambic with 7 ABV), Chimay Triple, Chimay Rouge and a Unibroue La Fin Du Monde.
But yeah, during my next U.S. trip I'll definitely have to check out some more breweries. As I said I really liked Stone, Firestone Walker, Anchor, Great Divide and Left Hand. |

07.16.14 | I need to start picking up some german and Belgian exports. I went to a shop the other day that had probabably 60 lines of german/Belgian exports. |

07.16.14 | ^^I knew it was only a matter of time until I saw you here haha |

07.16.14 | Make sure you get the good stuff, though. I know we have the reputation of being a beer nation but we have just as much bland crap as everybody else. (especially in the Pilsner lager)
Admittedly, I'm generally not the biggest fan of Pils. As I said, Bocks are good - there also some really good Weissbier brewers out there. Apart from the traditional breweries we've also had an influx of "modern" craft breweries over the years. Hard to go wrong with Belgian stuff, there are so many good things.
Personal recs: Schneider Weisse (most of their stuff, especially their Bocks though), Weihenstephan (mostly Bocks), Augustiner and maybe Crew, Chimay Blue (so good), Hoegaarden Grand Cru, Rochefort 10 (strong and delicious, all Rocheforts are good though), Orval (extremely quaffable ale-like trappist), Gulden Draak/Piraat (Belgian strong ale), Westmalle Dubble/Triple (more trappist goodness), possibly also Leffe and Duvel.
Some of these might be relatively pricy, though. I pay almost half the price of what I saw a bottle of Chimay was in FL. |

07.16.14 | Awesome, thanks for the recs man! Do you have any recs for anything comparable to a Porter? I really love that style but I've only tried two brews. |

07.16.14 | find yerself a nice old rasputin, aka the best beer |

07.16.14 | I'll def. try that one. I love stouts. |
Wolfhorde
07.16.14 | Definitely agreed with the Old Rasputin, picked that one randomly a couple of weeks back in a Florida pub. As for porters/dark beers.. oh god, there's so much. Where do you even start? Fullers Black Cab, Fullers London Porter, BrewDog Brixton Porter, BrewDog Cocoa Psycho, Great Divide's probably got something, Anchor's supposedly got a good porter. You could also try some Scotch Ales, they're also on the less hoppy, darker side. (like Great Divide's Claymore) There's also some really good Scandinavian stuff, no idea to which degree that's available, though.
Otherwise, just go to your local liquor shop and see what they've got. You may just have to try through some stuff to find sth. you like. You could also look through sites like ratebeer.com or beeradvocate. |
Wolfhorde
07.16.14 | Also, if you live anywhere near a bigger city there's probably some pubs with a versatile selection where you can just sample some stuff or get one of those "boards" with like 4 different smaller glasses of beer. (I think they called them "flyers" or something like that down in FL) |

07.16.14 | Thank! I use Beer advocate a lot but sometimes people just go with the hype so I like to get opinions :) |

07.18.14 | Just picked up Old Rasputin. 10$ for a 4pk. I'll leave my opinions on it soon. |
joshuahuntkc
07.18.14 | Pretty enjoyable. It seems a little bit less bitter than a typical stout/porter which makes it much more drinkable. Although it has a relatively high alcohol content for beer it doesn't taste as such so that's nice. Definitely a solid beer not sure I dig the price tag though. |

find one. the mouthfeel is seriously amazing if it is done right. its like drinking silk |
