| Sonisphere Ruled!
Yet again, Sonisphere proves itself to be the ultimate metal festival in the UK! Would highly recommend it to anyone in the country, amazing experience every time. | | 1 | | Highlights
| | 2 | | Iron Maiden Powerslave
Boy oh boy, did Iron Maiden make up for their dud of a show last year at Download. Bruce's voice was spot on, unlike in 2013 when he sounded like he was having a real tough time. The solos were impeccable and Steve Harris was being a cool motherfucker (as usual!) The ultimate experience live in heavy metal and one I would pay to see at every given opportunity.
Setlist:
Moonchild,
Can I Play with Madness,
The Prisoner,
2 Minutes to Midnight,
Revelations,
The Trooper,
The Number of the Beast,
Phantom of the Opera,
Run to the Hills,
Wasted Years,
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son,
Fear of the Dark,
Iron Maiden,
Encore:
Churchill's Speech,
Aces High,
The Evil That Men Do,
Sanctuary, | | 3 | | Metallica Ride the Lightning
While the 'by Request' gimmick seemed quite obsolete (due to every idiot picking the songs Metallica play at every show), Metallica have still got it when it comes to their live show. Fade to Black was impeccably played throughout and a definite highlight, James can hit them notes better than ever these days DAMN! Not much more to say, Metallica are always gonna be a highlight when it comes to their live show.
Setlist:
Battery,
Master of Puppets,
Welcome Home (Sanitarium),
Ride the Lightning,
The Unforgiven,
Fuel,
Lords of Summer,
Sad but True,
Fade to Black,
Creeping Death,
One,
For Whom the Bell Tolls,
Blackened,
Nothing Else Matters,
Enter Sandman,
Encore:
Whiskey in the Jar,
...And Justice for All,
Seek & Destroy, | | 4 | | Anthrax Among the Living
Holy god fucking damn, the first set these dudes played was one of the best I've seen. Among the Living in full was the closest I'm ever going to get to an 80's thrash gig, ugh it was perfect. The second set was awesome too, but damn that first one was fun as all hell!
Setlist:
I Am the Law,
Fight 'Em 'Til You Can't,
Got the Time,
Hymn 1,
In the End,
Deathrider,
Indians,
Antisocial, | | 5 | | Gojira The Way of All Flesh
Talk about a way to shake off the Saturday hangover. Being the first band to play the main stage on Sunday, Gojira had quite the task to wake up the dreary crowd. Well, they made it look damn easy. Brutal set and the pit for Flying Whales was intense as fuck. Go see them if you get the chance, well worth the cheap admission fee.
Setlist:
Explosia,
The Axe,
Backbone,
The Heaviest Matter of the Universe,
Flying Whales,
L'Enfant Sauvage,
Toxic Garbage Island,
Vacuity, | | 6 | | Deftones White Pony
I was very skeptical but also very excited going into Deftones' set. Chino's voice has not exactly been the best over the past year and their last 2 studio albums haven't exactly been stellar either. But as soon as they hit the stage, my doubts were vanquished. An emotional set from the band and one that will definitely leave a lasting impression on me for months to come.
Setlist:
Diamond Eyes,
Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away),
My Own Summer (Shove It),
Tempest,
Swerve City,
Feiticeira,
Digital Bath,
Poltergeist,
Rosemary,
Rocket Skates,
Change (In the House of Flies),
Headup,
Root,
7 Words, | | 7 | | Devin Townsend Ocean Machine: Biomech
Hilarious, emotional, flawless and gripping - it can only be a Devin Townsend show. I'll say no more, just seriously go and watch this dude if you get the chance!
Setlist:
Seventh Wave,
War,
Supercrush!,
Kingdom,
Juular,
Liberation,
Grace, | | 8 | | Disappointments
| | 9 | | Dream Theater Images and Words
A real crappy set from the once prog metal masters and one I will never likely see again. LaBrie varied from being tolerable to awful and god damn, the whole experience was so dull. Some of the songs were cool cos of them being old material, but even then they weren't pulled off well.
Setlist:
The Enemy Inside,
The Mirror,
Lie,
On the Backs of Angels,
The Looking Glass,
Along for the Ride,
Overture 1928,
Strange Deja Vu,
Pull Me Under, | | 10 | | The Prodigy The Fat of the Land
Yeah, the Prodigy proved yet again that they simply cannot hold a crowd for more than 5 minutes. The gig got old fast and people were leaving less than halfway through the set...yeah, it was void of any enjoyment whatsoever tbh.
Setlist:
Breathe,
Jetfighter,
Voodoo People,
Omen,
Poison,
Rockweiler,
Thunder,
(Dubstep Mix),
AWOL,
AWOL Beats,
Firestarter,
Run With the Wolves,
World's On Fire,
Spitfast,
Omen (Reprise),
Invaders Must Die,
Smack My Bitch Up,
Encore:
Take Me to the Hospital,
Hyperspeed (G-Force Part 2),
New Beats,
Their Law, | | 11 | | Ghost B.C. Opus Eponymous
Normally breathing with life and downright majestic, Ghost were anything but that during their set on Sunday. Repetitive vocals, terrible audio and an overall lack of stage presence made this gig experience a rather trite one. Although, the sing along to Monstrance Clock at the end was pretty cool.
Setlist:
Year Zero,
Con Clavi Con Dio,
Prime Mover,
Stand by Him,
If You Have Ghosts (Roky Erickson cover),
Ritual,
Monstrance Clock, | | 12 | | Surprises
| | 13 | | Karnivool Sound Awake
I wouldn't exactly call myself a 'fan' of Karnivool's music, but god damn they sure do know how to hold a crowd in a live setting. The vocals were spot on and the whole set was played with some confidence, with some cool little improv sections thrown in there.
Setlist:
Shutterspeed,
Goliath,
We Are,
The Refusal,
Set Fire to the Hive,
Themata,
New Day, | | 14 | | Slayer Reign in Blood
Ever since Jeff's death, Slayer have seemed rather tired and lackluster within their live shows. However, the set they played at Sonisphere on Saturday was as forceful as I have seen them for quite some time. Tom nailed the AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA in Angel of Death to a T and Gary Holt absolutely slayed Jeff's (rip) solos.
Setlist:
Hell Awaits,
The Antichrist,
Hate Worldwide,
Mandatory Suicide,
Captor of Sin,
War Ensemble,
Disciple,
Seasons in the Abyss,
Dead Skin Mask,
Raining Blood,
Black Magic,
Encore:
South of Heaven,
Angel of Death, | | 15 | | Mastodon Leviathan
Everyone knows the deal with Mastodon's live gigs; they suck. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see they absolutely kill it on the Sunday of the festival. Brann sounded fantastic doing vocals, Troy and Brent (yes, BRENT!) didn't sound too shabby either. I have a new found hope the band after seeing them, lets hope they have turned a corner!
Setlist:
Oblivion,
The Motherload,
Blasteroid,
Black Tongue,
Divinations,
Crystal Skull,
Megalodon,
Chimes at Midnight,
High Road,
Aqua Dementia, | | 16 | | Protest the Hero Volition
Okay, now this show was fucking mental. From the offset the crowd was so pumped, couple that with a fantastic display of musicianship and you've got yourself a party. Def the most surprising set of the weekend, enjoyed every minute of it and I must say, I have a respect for Protest that I did not have before the gig.
Setlist:
Clarity,
Bone Marrow,
Underbite,
Hair-Trigger,
Bloodmeat,
Sex Tapes, | | 17 | | Other Shit That Ruled!
| | 18 | | Alice in Chains Dirt
Setlist:
Them Bones,
Dam That River,
Again,
Check My Brain,
Hollow,
Man in the Box,
No Excuses,
It Ain't Like That,
We Die Young,
Stone,
Would?,
Rooster, | | 19 | | Gallows Grey Britain
Setlist:
Last June,
Outsider Art,
Misery,
Mondo Chaos,
Chains,
In the Belly of a Shark,
Cross of Lorraine,
Orchestra of Wolves, | | 20 | | Electric Wizard Dopethrone
Dopethrone...in full. | |

@Buttery They don't do it for me at a live show, all the songs start to blend together after like 10 minutes. | PitchforkArms
07.07.14 | yeah dude 16 puts on a hell of a show, and the vocalist is pretty hilarious. too bad they skipped everything from kezia. i guess gojira is supposed to be like the most clean sounding act in live metal. ehhh either way, wish i coulda been | BigPleb

07.08.14 | I was there for the Sunday, had a great day. Would have loved to have done the whole weekend but moneys.... Every band on the bill played very well actually, even the bands I don't like. Mastodon closing with Aqua Dementia was so fucking good. Karnivool were seriously good. | BigPleb

07.08.14 | How did I know this was a Pleb list just from the title haha

07.08.14 | The Prodigy are just a cheap dance/rave act. dunno why they always get picked for big metal festivssss | BigPleb

07.08.14 | m/
| Surtur
07.14.14 | Lol I'm like a week late but reading this has given me such post-Hellfest blues (wow, only took like a month...) because of Maiden, Carcass and Electric Wizard. | BigPleb
07.14.14 | Rocked hard, for sure. | Surtur
07.14.14 | Carcass were acting the similarly at Hellfest but it was more to do with how much they hated A7X, so they had a point! | BigPleb
07.14.14 | hahaha ye man, Jeff is getting grumpy. | anarchistfish

07.14.14 | What happened to Download Festival? They use to have some fucking killer lineups and I just saw the 2015 lineup and puked a bit. Hardly anything worth seeing. | BigPleb
07.14.14 | Ye man it was sucky this year, more a rock fest anyway tbh. |
