Darkocean's Best Of '14 (so Far)

I haven't heard near the amount of stuff I would have liked to by this point in the year, but that's dat adult lyfe for ya. :)

Chino Moreno does electro-rock, what can I say?
2 Mastodon
Once More Round the Sun

A true mix of Crack the Skye and The Hunter, IMO
In Humor and Sadness

Having never heard any of Josh Scogin's projects before this, this album melted my
4Kishi Bashi

Hey I just met you. And this is crazy. But this is a good album. By K. Ishibashi.
5White Sea
In Cold Blood

Morgan Kibby = dat voice.
6Mekong Delta
In a Mirror Darkly

Complex riffage with great vox, just how I like my prog thrash. Also, the
instrumental is amazeballs.
7Say Anything

Best SA album since In Defense and the best moments of the self-titled
8St. Vincent
St. Vincent

I'm pretty sure "Digital Witness" describes half of my Facebook friends.
9The Horrors

Yes, they ape other bands' sounds, but execution is everything and this album has it.
10Bo Ningen

Absolutely insane vox (dem shrieks), heavy, droney, punky, Japanese, yeah :)
11Tomas Barfod
Love Me

One of the more enjoyable electronic records I've heard this year. Nice textures.
12The Fresh & Onlys
House of Spirits

Slightly shoegazey with great production.
13The Menzingers
Rented World

They don't want to be assholes anymore. I can identify with that.
Reality Testing

Having not heard Galaxy Garden, I am loving the mix of house and hip-hop.
Glorious 7th chords all over this thing.
15School of Language
Old Fears

"In order to preserve sonic fidelity, this album has been mixed and mastered using
significantly less compression and limiting than most contemporary records. For
maximum listening pleasure, please turn your stereo system UP!" OMG YES
16Every Time I Die
From Parts Unknown

Deserves all the hype it gets. That instrumental jam at the end of El Dorado hell yea
17Syd Arthur
Sound Mirror

An homage to the early Canterbury prog/psych scene.

Best hip-hop album I've heard in a while, much better than you-know-who's recent
album (although it does kinda suck they broke up).
19Animals as Leaders
The Joy of Motion

Much more consistent than Weightless, one of my top prog records of the year
My Krazy Life

Hilarious concept album. Never thought I'd enjoy something like this, but YG's
commitment to making this an album and not just a collection of songs makes this
a winner in my book.
21Killer Be Killed
Killer Be Killed

How to Do a Modern Supergroup 101
22The Front Bottoms

The lyrics on this one make me laugh out loud in the most "that is so true" sense

Broken Pieces

R.I.P. Shane Gibson, you went out on a high note
25Jack White

Greatest analog production I've heard in quite some time. IMO this tops
Blunderbuss in every way. "Sounds like the Black Keys" my ass, Jack deserves his
place at the top of the garage/psych throne.
The Quantum Enigma

Band name is basically what it says on the tin. power metalzzzzzz m/
27Trap Them

A Kurt Ballou production, what could go wrong? Thought this sounded more like
Converge than ETID anyway
28 Shinobi Ninja
Escape from New York

Highly talented rap-rock group. And speaking of rap rock....
29Linkin Park
The Hunting Party

The return of my lifelong favorite band does not disappoint
30Son of Aurelius
Under a Western Sun

These guys are crazy talented, instrumentally and vocally. Prog death with an edge
Kill the Power

Laugh all you want, these guys are truly their own genre. Increasing the electronic
elements actually helps this band's sound.

Probably the best djent-centric album I've heard this year (besides Intervals' A
Voice Within)
