limiters have come a long way since 2003 bros, with lookahead and intersample peak detection id say limiting up to dr4 wont introduce audible distortion. sorry but the waveforms in audacity/your dr meter wont tell you how much PERCEIVED headroom there is since you can increase peak to rms just by eqing differently yet it can SOUND lower in volume. use your ears |

07.21.14 | Barring the clipping and compressed dynamic range of modern recordings, there are a few that still sound pretty good.
- Pretty much anything Radiohead.
- Fortress is my go-to standard for EQ (barring some specific genres). It's almost perfectly linear down to about 100 Hz, and then has a tasteful sub-bass boost.
- Themata
- Final Conversation of Kings
- Lateralus
- Jane Doe, of course. It's the cleanest dirty-sounding album I've ever heard.
- The Crash of '47
- 13th Step
I could go on for awhile. There are quite a few albums which sound particularly terrible, though. New Mastodon has crap production, newest La Dispute is God-awful (though can be improved with some internal EQ). Production is all over the map. It's kind of ridiculous and really inexcusable in this day and age.

BlacKapes
07.21.14 | well whatever, i go on what.cd and theres always someone complaining about an album with dr6 as being overcompressed when there isnt any audible distortion or clipping and its fcking annoying. maybe if youre listening on a shit setup youll hear a compressor react to the low end and itll sound clipped if your setup isnt reproducing the lows. but i think people confuse generally shitty production with clipping. for example, linkin park - the hunting party sounds like shit, with a dr of 3-5, but it would sound like shit even if it had more dynamic range. |
Alondite
07.22.14 | Well...My HE-400s extend well down to the lowest limits of my hearing and have less than 1% THD up to about 200 Hz, so they have about as good a low-end reproduction as you can get. I also use a Schiit Magni/Modi Amp/DAC combo. I'm pretty certain that the issue isn't my setup.
The biggest, or at least most audible, issue with production isn't even
clipping/dynamic range, it's a lack of high frequency extension and poor EQ.
