Album Digging - June (2nd Half)

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
10Rush
Exit...Stage Left

I've been writing this list from 1-10 so as you read through this my writing slowly
becomes better. I can't be arsed much writing about this album because I'm just
tired - Rush are better live than in the studio, the end. Favourite Track: 'Xanadu'
9Blueneck
Scars of the Midwest

It's very interesting hearing that these guys played Glastonbury, I wouldn't expect an
ambient post rock band to play at such a big festival. Fantastic album, didn't listen to it
much during this half though so that's why it's so far down.
Dark/Ambient/Atmospheric/Post rock whatever, it's all very cool but depressing. Favourite
Track: 'Yesterday's Forgotten'
8Yes
Relayer

Yes have never been a favourite of mine, but the jazz influences in 'Relayer' are
fantastic. I'm really not liking what I'm hearing of 'Heaven and Earth', mind you.
Favourite Track: 'The Gates of Delirium'
7The Pineapple Thief
Tightly Unwound

It's been about a year since I last saw these guys live. It's a shame they didn't play
much of their pre-SHiM stuff, because all of their discography is pretty damn rad.
Easily one of my favourite live bands, I only hope I can see them again soon after the
new album release. Favourite Track: 'Different World'
6 Mastodon
Once More 'Round the Sun

I'm not that big of a Mastodon fan, so anything I try to say about it is just tripe
because I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about. This new album takes a lot
from 'The Hunter' and made it heavier; some people have saying that Mastodon are
becoming more mainstream, but I don't really think that's accurate - it's definitely
more high-energy than their earlier sludgier stuff, and it may cause it to be more
accessible, but I don't think they've tried to go mainstream. It's a great album, but
not their best. Favourite Track: 'Chimes at Midnight'
5Liquid Tension Experiment
Liquid Tension Experiment

I haven't listened to this album in full in a looooooooooong time, and I've forgotten how good it is. This
was a glorious time before Dream Theater lost their spark, a time when their technical wankery was
actually creative and a time when Jordan had hair. The ironically titled 'Three Minute Warning' has got to
be one of the best pieces of improvisation out there, props to Tony Levin for making it happen.
Favourite Track: 'Three Minute Warning'
4Anubis
Hitchhiking to Byzantium

Anubis is the new 'Frames', they're going to appear on a -lot- of my lists. The new album I still think is as
strong as the first few times I listened to it, and I'm growing to love the track 'Blood is Thicker than
Common Sense' even more, I'm just in love with the vocals in it. Again, I have written a review of this
album; if you haven't listened to the album or read the review, I suggest you check it out. Absolutely
fantastic album. Favourite Track: 'Tightening of the Screws'
3Anubis
A Tower of Silence

I've probably been listening to AToS more than H2B in this half - there are a quite few moments in this
album which are absolutely stunning: the ambient, atmospheric soundscape in the middle of 'The Passing
Bell' followed by the beautiful lyrics 'Take my hand, take me to the Promised Land...'; the heavy choral
ending to 'All That Is...' and the saxophone solo at the end of 'The Holy Innocent'. Hands down my
favourite sax solo of all time - an absolutely flawless album, I cannot fault it at all. Favourite Track: 'The
Passing Bell'
2Mastodon
Crack the Skye

When I first bought this album, I never really gave it a fair chance, but I've been listening to it
again after listening to their latest release. It's a perfect blend of sludge metal and progressive
metal, and has an effective mix of harsh and clean vocals. I know sod all about what they're doing
with their guitars, but it almost feels ethereal in some parts, especially in the beginning of 'The
Czar'. I get the feeling they've just dumped a ton of reverb over the whole album; which is is no
complaint in any way, I love it - but is that what they've done? I have no idea. Oh, and yeah this
is better than OMRtS, great album! (I love the proggy breakdown in the middle of 'The Last Baron'
which just screams SFAM-era Dream Theater). Favourite Track: 'The Czar'
1Bjork
Post

I've only listened to Debut, Homogenic and Vespertine in full, so I thought I'd have a
listen to Post after I've been happily content with listening to only a few of Bjorks
work. I'm kicking myself for not listening to it sooner - I love everything about it,
from the aggression of 'Army of Me', the sinister 'Enjoy', the experimentalism and the
bass in 'Headphones' and the glitz and glamour of 'It's Oh So Quiet's brass band and
Bjork's terrifying vocals. Unlike a few of her other albums, I haven't felt like skipping
through any of 'Post' to get to certain songs. It's the perfect Bjork album. Favourite
Track: 'It's Oh So Quiet'
