07.01.14 | Well, I think for the listener it's not a problem to precisely label a band, but the problem is when the artist labels himself, giving him stylistic limits he "can't" break |
Jots
07.01.14 | It's convenient because some people like specific sounds. For some, simply calling something 'metal' is enough, but I've listened to enough to know what kinds I prefer, and it just makes it easier to search for similar things... I mean, it's like mixing up trigonometry and algebra. "It's all Math, isn't it?" well, yeah, but they're different. |

07.01.14 | The deeper you get into any subject the more complex the terms become, it goes with the saying 'the more you know the less you know'. A lot of people don't care to put in the effort to learn about different genres but if you know them you may as well use them, if both you and I know what death metal is why not tell me it is death metal? It will give me a much better understanding of what you're talking about. People who say otherwise are just plebs. |

07.01.14 | depends on if you're right or not |
lyzakthellama
07.01.14 | Subgenres are there to help describe a band, I don't get the issue with saying a band is death metal or black metal or whatever. It's just more specific |

07.01.14 | That's what I'm saying lol |

07.01.14 | its all just metal am I right xD |

07.01.14 | if you label a band with more than three words you're doing it wrong |
GringoSuave89
07.01.14 | If you have to call a band "glampunk sadcore skramz" or anything like that, you're taking it too far.
There used to be a chart online that started with generic terms, and go full on crazy. Wish I could find it. |
SkaCali
07.01.14 | yeah just dont forget to label Have A Nice Life as post-industrial doomgaze |
Calc
07.01.14 | why call it metal just call it music-- why call it music just call it sounds--why call it sounds just call it vibrations |

07.01.14 | i always prefer when someone tells me a similar band then a genre |
Mythodea
07.01.14 | It's as mentioned above, the deeper you go, the more complex it gets. Moreover, it's helpful when you want to start with a genre. First it's metal, then heavy, traditional, black, then thrash, progressive, death and so on. Though, there's no need to add genres because of a simple song a band released that's more thrashy, so you call them ''Power - thrash Metal'' . Over-categorization makes things chaotic. |

07.01.14 | It's annoying when people get mad if you "mislabel" a band |

Tell me about that! Once, years before, when I wasn't as informed as I am now, I did the fatal mistake of addressing Epica as ''Epic Metal''. Little did I know of what was to follow... |
Keyblade
07.01.14 | Genres are just classifications to help define a certain sound better. I just use them to find what I want, it doesn't matter to me if someone considers Born of Osiris black metal or something |
Funeralopolis
07.01.14 | i always prefer when someone tells me a similar band then a genre [3]
yea telling someone 2 or 3 similiar bands will always yield a more accurate description of what to expect than a genre tag |
Cimnele
07.01.14 | if i can't assemble a complete image of a band's sound in my mind based on your genre classification then you may as well stop attempting to use your mouth for communication |
SaneTBP
07.01.14 | The best is when a person makes the effort to explain the sound and style in their own words. It's a lot more interesting (sometimes more precise) and opens the converstation up. Only using genre tags to explain a certain artist is kinda lame. |

07.01.14 | Didn't expect to get this many comments on such a dumb post on my end...but okay |
ChoccyPhilly
07.01.14 | I use the genre that sums up the album the best. It matters to me because I want the label to be what it is |
