Long story short, fucked around for a time, didn't take anything seriously at all. Got busted with some weed, then a couple months later running from the cops from a party I was underage at. Fast forward 8 years and I got hung up for fighting 2 dudes at once after a party.
I returned to college at the age of 24, and recently graduated with honors with a major in Telecommunications. I've heard that my past would disqualify me for OCS, given the increased competition due to bringing soldiers home and qualified candidates competing for a civilian spots. I've also heard that the age limit is now 28 years old (I'm 27, will be 28 in July) to be considered without waiver. I understand you're not a recruiter, but I want to know anything you may know that could help me out. Thanks man. |

I could sit here and regurgitate things that I've been told by various people, but you're going to need to follow up with someone with actual paperwork anyway. So my advice is to skip the internet middleman and go talk to your local officer recruiter.

Why?: Further training and direct experience in my field. All the jobs that are being offered require not only a degree, but 3-5 years of experience. Kind of an impossible obstacle without being grandfathered in. Beyond that, I understand the benefits that follow military life, and am interested in that as well because I know that we live in an unstable economy to say the least. |

06.21.14 | Being an Officer is all management and you won't do any hands-on work. You could get put in charge of a department in the job field you want, but it's not guaranteed. Starting out as an officer is like starting out as enlisted as well. You'll get treated like a baby and won't really be in charge of anything important. As you put more time in, you'll get a bigger slice of the pie. You'll be responsible for the outcome of your department's objectives. That means you'll get paid well, but you'll be pushing papers and attending meetings all day.
Even if you went enlisted, the Air Force does not guarantee your choice of work. You'll pick a "field" of work and they decide where to put you, which could be a number of different jobs. The Navy allows you to pick a more specific job if they have an opening for it. (I'm an Information Systems Technician [radio/satellite comm/computer & network maintenance, etc.), if that's the job field you're interested in. The navy also has Interior Communications, which is more phone line-related work.)
As far as the different AF job fields are concerned, I'm fairly ignorant. You'd be better off talking to a recruiter. I grew up with the Navy, so it's the only thing I know well enough to give adequate information. |
