OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | Bands like the Deftones and Incubus almost made the list. |
Muisc4Life26
06.18.14 | Dude where's Lil B dawg? |
titanslayer
06.18.14 | This could have been my list five years ago. You really need to branch out bro, assuming this isn't a troll list |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | Shoot forgot Green Day |
ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | I agree about branching out. I remember when Breaking Benjamin were the tits for me but now I can't stand their simple structures and "catchy" chorus'. Props for Flyleaf though. They could do with a bit more love |
BMDrummer
06.18.14 | If this is a troll, this was kind of weak. If this was real, branch out some more. |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | What's wrong with Breaking Benjamin? Breath is near perfect. Their song structures are tight and their songs are catchy. |
BMDrummer
06.18.14 | They're kind of hollow, catchiness doesn't equal good music. Props for Tool though, try some Neurosis sometime. |
ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | Because they limit themselves with just doing that. It's cool and stuff and there is nothing wrong with it, but once you discover stuff which is a bit more challenging but inevitably rewarding, you'll see exactly what I mean |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | Catchiness equals good music to me. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean that I shouldn't either. |
Keyblade
06.18.14 | " I remember when Breaking Benjamin were the tits for me but now I can't stand their simple structures and "catchy" chorus'. Props for Flyleaf though. They could do with a bit more love"
But Flyleaf are the same tho :/ |
JesusMilosovic
06.18.14 | Did BMDrummer just rec this guy Neurosis? Lol you think he'll actually like that? |
Keyblade
06.18.14 | "Catchiness equals good music to me. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean that I shouldn't either."
Yep |
ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | We're not saying that you shouldn't like any band above, we're just saying that branching out is awesome :) |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | I'm always up for branching out as ling as it isn't death metal or screamo. |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | My friend told me to listen to some death metal band called suffokate a few weeks back. Made my ears bleed. |
ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | Hey, you might enjoy it dude! you just need to ease your way into it. I was literally the exact same a couple of years ago and metalcore was kind of the bridge across because it's catchy but also has rough tendencies. |
Keyblade
06.18.14 | That band is awful though, and is deathcore not death metal. You probably still won't like it, but try this out and check out the lyrics too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbp60IX_jFQ |
Mythodea
06.18.14 | Is this in order? Cause Slipknot are def not n.1. |
BMDrummer
06.18.14 | @JesusMilosovic I like quick recs like that, something to throw someone off guard you know. :) |
climactic
06.18.14 | I'm always up for branching out as ling as it isn't death metal or screamo. [2] |
scorpiusx
06.18.14 | I agree with catchiness = quality. Take Katy Perry for instance: Her catalog is brimming with ear worms and she's probably the best artist of the past twenty years. |
ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | Now that is a troll ^ |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | I'm sorry Keyblade, but that was horrible. The music isn't bad but the vocals are just blah blah blah blah. I understood maybe every 3 or 4th word. Thank you, though. |
ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | If you're not into screaming or death growls, try A Day To Remember. They mix pop punk with metalcore in an infectiously catchy and accessible way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0T44mKEhfb4 |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | I've listened to them before, ChoccyPhilly. Not my thing but thank you. |
scorpiusx
06.18.14 | It's not trolling if your sarcasm has purpose. ;) |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | Just because something is catchy doesn't automatically mean I like it. I don't understand your sarcastic point, scorpius. |
BMDrummer
06.18.14 | You couldn't understand the words to Symbolic? Now that is trolling. |
ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | Aww really bro? I thought it would be right down your alley. Alright, last effort:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0T44mKEhfb4
My bad scorp, I don't always pick up on sarcasm |
Sabrutin
06.18.14 | To be honest I still fall a lot for Breaking Benjamin. I must have played their albums hundreds of times, I can't stop liking them. They were also a help when I lost someone important, so yeah I guess I will live forever with a guilty pleasure band as one of my favourites.
Same with Sevenfold, but I don't feel ashamed at all (Hail to the King though...). |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | No, I couldn't. He just sounded like he was shrieking. It might also be the speakers on my computer. I'll look it up on my iPhone lster. |

06.18.14 | @OurDailyFred: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1JNS3x24kU&feature=kp Try this. It's not screamy or anything like
that, just awesome. |
ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | There's no shame in A7X for me. They have some great stuff regardless what anyone says but yeah, Hail To The King is a pile of shit |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | I love Hail to the King.
And I'm sorry, Choccy. I don't like screamo. |
BMDrummer
06.18.14 | How is screamo a genre? |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | I love that bassline, ArsMoriendi! Thank you! |
Sabrutin
06.18.14 | @Choccy: I'm glad to hear such a sentence from someone with 1000 comments on Sputnik.
"And I'm sorry, Choccy. I don't like screamo."
I think you should try Waking the Fallen from A7X. It's by far me favourite album by them and it may change your mind (apparently it did with a lot of persons). |
ArsMoriendi
06.18.14 | @OurDailyFred: The whole album is great too.
It's called Angel Dust. |
ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | It's weird that you say you don't like screamed vocals but you have Slipknot as no.1 A load of their songs has some harsh vocals like Left Behind and (Sic) |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | I really don't like Waking the Fallen. It's too much screaming.
Slipknot is an exception. I think it's because I can understand what he is saying most of the time. |
Thibs
06.18.14 | try dying fetus |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | I can tell by the name of that band that I won't like it, but thanks Thibs. |
ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | Fair enough bro. Something without screams then.

If you don't like any of this, then I really do give up |
Sabrutin
06.18.14 | "Slipknot is an exception. I think it's because I can understand what he is saying most of the time."
Ok, I understand why you don't like A7X screaming then. |
Keyblade
06.18.14 | A more open mind and more knowledge will bring you much more enjoyment down the line, just a word of advice. |
titanslayer
06.18.14 | Try 10 years their a pretty good band that seems up your alley |
Thibs
06.18.14 | why do you need to know what the vocalist is saying? why can't you just enjoy the musicianship?
why do i entertain trolls?
these are all important questions |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | I love Porcupine Tree. My dad listens to them when he takes me to school in the morning.
And I already have 10 Years on the list. |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | Because part of music for me is relating to the band through lyrics. I don't see a point in listening to music if I can't relate in some way. |
ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | Oh sweet. Surprised they're not on your list then |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | I havent heard enough of them. Usually my rides to school in the morning consist of torturing my sister with the guy who carpools with us. |

ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | Ahh well definitely listen to all of In Absentia at least, it's well worth your time. |
Keyblade
06.18.14 | "Because part of music for me is relating to the band through lyrics. I don't see a point in listening to music if I can't relate in some way."
You can listen to music in the same way you watch movies or read a book though. You don't have to limit yourself |

06.18.14 | I actually have two mothers because my biological mom is gay, but I do have a dad. That was completely insensitive and uncalled for.
Ugh forgot about Red! Thanks titanslayer! |

06.18.14 | I am ignoring the trolls, futures. |
ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | I'd hardly call Slipknot's lyrics relatable.
Also, sometimes instrumentals or bands that sing in a foreign language can be equally as relatable because it can be whatever you want it to be *cough* Sigur Ros *cough* |

06.18.14 | Lol, successful troll is successful. |

ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | Oh fair enough. I'd probably consider that be the tone and aggression being relatable rather than the lyrics but yeah, they're decent for that kind of stuff |

scorpiusx
06.18.14 | FWIW I would chip in but I'm not much into hard rock/metal. I listen mostly to alt rock rather than hard rock; so I haven't exposed myself to much stuff harder than Soundgarden, Brand New, or Afghan Whigs. I guess the hardest thing I probably listen to is "The Downward Spiral" by Nine Inch Nails. |

BMDrummer
06.18.14 | How old are you? |
Mythodea
06.18.14 | You can have your opinions, but I remember my 12y.o. self back in 2008 thinking that Humanity Vol.1 was super heavy. You are entitled to your own opinions, but, please, try accepting criticism. Sooner or later you'll find out that *maybe* you've been wrong at some points of your life. Otherwise, you'll be an arrogant ignorant. |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | I just turned 14 2 weeks ago |
BMDrummer
06.18.14 | What Mythodea said. Back when I was 11, I thought All Time Low was raw punk rock, but now I think that hybrid of me was kind of stupid. I accepted influence on my musical taste by listening to things people told me were good. I liked all this stuff when I was 11, but then I discovered other things that were more interesting, dense, and thought-provoking. |
ChoccyPhilly
06.18.14 | 2 years ago at 15 I thought children of bodom were some seriously heavy stuff and I didn't accept that DT (or some of it) had pop structures. BM is right, once you start listening to other stuff which is completely different from a songwriting basis, you'll realise that writing pop structures really does have its limitations and is to an extent, less rewarding and though provoking |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | I don't understand. You guys talk to me like I'm an idiot for liking the music that I like. It's like you all think you're better than me because you listen to more obscure stuff, and that's not fair. I like what I like, and I'm open to recommendations, but just because you like a band that screams unintelligibly doesn't mean you're better than me. |
Avagantamos

OurDailyFred

Sabrutin
06.18.14 | What everybody is saying is that we all had some mainstream favourite bands, but after listening to more music we grew out of most of them (of course, some nostalgia remains and can't be forgotten) after realizing that they really weren't as good as we thought.
Nobody want to say you're stupid, they are just trying to widen your music horizons. Browse some Sputnik and with time you'll understand. |
Avagantamos

OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | Well, stop telling me that I need to expand and actually give recommendations. |
BMDrummer
06.18.14 | Sabrutin said it best. We all had a mainstream phase, and we should all be willing to admit nostalgic appeal. But, it was a phase because it was before we discovered our true musical identity. Trust me when I say I don't only listen to death metal or whatever, I consider my taste to be somewhat diverse, not to sound pretentious, but it would be boring to just listen to one genre all the time. Hence why I can listen to Bjork and Napalm Death. |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | Not my thing, @avagantamos. |

06.18.14 | I will check them out tonight thank you man. I know a little pink Floyd. |
BMDrummer
06.18.14 | Definitely Fugazi, quite possibly the greatest punk band ever. Most of those are also really good as well, with Pink Floyd, Rush, and Opeth being worthwhile. Here's some more recs:
King Crimson
Yes
Black Sabbath
Isis
Dinosaur Jr.
Genesis (early albums)
Queens of the Stone Age
Slayer (earlier stuff) |

Opeth [2]
Pink Floyd [2]
Cynic [2]

Black Sabbath [2]
Quuens of the Stone Age [2]
Slayer [2] (tbh I enjoy their late works too)
Also:
Accept
Queensryche
Bad Religion
Death Angel
Sonata Arctica
Toto
^ Those are the ones I think are easy to approach for a taste of different genres
Last but not least, I'll give just a couple of recs about the heavier genres.
For black metal try An Autumn For Crippled Children
For death metal try SepticFlesh
I'm not too keen on those genres, but since I really like both bands I think they are easy to approach for newcomers (like me).

06.18.14 | I'm not a big fan of old rock, guys.
And why do I continually get accused of being a troll? |
CamJCollins
06.18.14 | For starters, it would help to not shoot down every rec given to you. And many user have already said it: your musical taste will (hopefully) mature and all of these recs you are shooting down will end up being favorites in ten years. I used to be a slipknot, mudvayne, etc. fan. Nowadays I have moved onto much better bands, such as Death, Cynic, and Isis. |
OurDailyFred
06.18.14 | I haven't shot down every recommendation that's been given to me, though. I've liked quite a few so far, except for the screamo ones. |
ArsMoriendi
06.18.14 | @OurDailyFred: Just listen to Faith No More's Angel Dust and you'll be fine. |

06.18.14 | Alright, here is the most sincere advice I can give to you:
To appreciate more complex forms of music, you generally need to have some familiarity with it. Familiarity breeds appreciation to a certain extent. Too steep of a drop-off from what one is familiar with will cause them to not appreciate the music to the fullest extent. When I was in high school I listened to a lot of crappy pop music, and was cool with most of that at the time, but I was wanting to see what was out there.
Here is what I did; what got me introduced to the world of music on a whole new level. And many people will scoff at this, but it worked for me:
Rolling Stone put out a list a few years back that listed off their Top 100 Songs of the Decade. I listened to every song on that list that I wasn't familiar with:
http://www.stereogum.com/105081/rolling_stones_100_best_albums_songs_of_the_00s/list/
Is it a perfect list? No. Heck Rolling Stone is one of my least trusted music publications at this point. But for someone who's just starting to get their feet wet, it's a great introduction to what all is out there.
There will be a lot of stuff there that doesn't grab your attention. Some you will dismiss; wondering what the hype is about. But some of those songs are bound to grab your attention, and you'll replay them. Then you'll want to hear their respective albums and so on and so forth.
The key to finding the music that you love the most is primarily about self discovery, rather than other people pushing their music on you. This list has a lot of stuff on there, and your favs are bound to be different from my favs. But that's the beauty of it. ^
Go ahead, give it a whirl. |

Mythodea
06.19.14 | @Scorpiusx, FVCK MAN! That was the way I started seriously delving into metal!I had some serious basis from my parents and older sister (Zeppelin,Floyd,Deep Purple etc.) but metal? Hell no! The closest I had ever been to metal was Metallica and Iron Maiden. And maybe Dream Theater.
Then one day I bought the Greek Metal Hammer just because it had some posters I liked. BUT! it also had a competition: ''Make a list of your 30 favorite songs and win!'' The 200 best songs according to readers were published two months later and I jammed 99% of them. Little by little I started learning music and rejecting bands over others etc. Four years have passed since. Sniff! |
