The War Of Compilations / Whole Albums

Everyone seems to hate compilation albums. Also everyone also seems to rsay that I should always listen to an album as a whole. Also not sure why.
5The Pineapple Thief
3000 Days

The Pineapple Thief have a large and vast discography. It's far from perfect and easy to get lost
in, but that also means that there is so much shit to filter through. Having liked one song from
this band previously, I first tried getting into them during the release of 'All The Wars' and I will
admit, I never got round to listen to that album. The thing is, now that I know them, I wouldn't
have liked them if I listened to 'All The Wars', which would have left me to ignore them
completely and I wouldn't have gotten into them ever. Everyone says compilations are bad and
everything must be listened to in the context of the album, but it serves a purpose of getting you
introduced to an artist in the first place and keeps you gripped with their best songs which will
prompt any sensible music listener to explore into the discography further.
4Bjork
Greatest Hits

It's definitely arguable that compilations don't even contain an Artist's best songs. I
didn't know where to start with Bjork, so I bought this and dug about a third of the songs
on this and tried listening to whole albums. After this, I got really into the song 'Unison'
but it was frustratingly not in this Greatest Hits compilation. Repeating a point from TPT,
whilst whole albums are cool, when you're a new listener to a band you want to be
gripped by at least one song immediately rather than listening to half an album and
releasing you're not really into it (yet) and giving up. Saves a lot of time as an
introductory.
3Green Day
International Superhits

Record labels are frustrating and we know most of the compilations are for money. So
what's all the hate about? I realise whole albums are better, but unless you're fully into the
album and want to listen to it thoroughly for the context, I don't see anything wrong with
compilations apart from some very minute limitations.
2Porcupine Tree
The Incident

Which leads me to the point about whole albums. Context is great. I can only listen to
disc one in two ways. One being directly from the beginning and listen to the whole 50
odd minutes of The Incident (which I don't count as a whole song) or start from 'Octane
Twisted' to the end of 'I Drive The Hearse'. I couldn't listen to this in a different way but
there are some bloody annoying moments that I have to endure too *cough* Drawing
The line *cough*. So if all of yous who have been banging on about 'context', what if
you really REALLY hate a song on the album? On my mp3 player, I only really have
songs I like from the album cos I don't want to waste memory, so I scarcely have a full
album in my library. Obviously this isn't a problem if you love each song on the album,
but there are only very few albums/songs where I need to listen to them in their
flow/order.
1Enter Shikari
A Flash Flood of Colour

Or sometimes listening as a whole just doesn't make any sense. This album would be
utterly pointless listening to as a whole because it literally makes no difference. As much
as I love this album, the songs stand out more than the overall album and I'd pick of
'Gandhi mate, Gandhi' and listen to that by itself rather than start all the way from the
beginning.
