Depressingly Beautiful Songs

I tend to find beauty in depressing and sombre music. It doesn't really get any better than a gloomy song that makes me cry at the happiest of moments, so I've decided to celebrate a couple of ones that have really hit me! Might just put a compilation to save me from listing all the individual albums by the artist.

Thomas Was Alone Original Soundtrack

Where Are You?
22Ulver
Kveldssanger

Ostenfor Sol Og Vestenfor Maane/Hoyfjeldbilde - Although I wouldn't exactly call
the vocals on this album particularly breathtaking in any form, the instrumentation
on this is top notch all around. These two songs stand out the most, where the
guitar picking, vocal harmonies and the flutes sound just that more emotional and
ethereal.
21Bjork
Greatest Hits

All Is Full Of Love/Unison - Unison isn't actually on this, but it saves valuable space.
All is Full Of Love undoubtedly has my favourite bjork moment on it. Everything
comes together and Bjork's vocals reach an unimaginable peak, which is all too
breathtaking.
20There Will Be Fireworks
The Dark, Dark Bright

And Our Hearts Did Beat/The River - Passion and emotion at its finest. Seriously,
the former sounds like a cry from a heartbroken tale of no return whilst the river is
somewhat more powerful. Vocals on the River come out as being so passionate and
emotional the pain that this song is about is felt throughout. Regret, sorrow and
loneliness are very prominent on these two songs and they're both very touching.
19Nick Drake
Pink Moon

Place To Be - Nick Drake's most powerful song in my opinion. He sings his heart out
on this and his passion can be felt with every listen.
18Storm Corrosion
Storm Corrosion

Storm Corrosion - Title track of the self titled. Funny that.
17Blackfield
Blackfield II

1000 People

If You Wait

Wasting My Young Years
15Maudlin Of The Well
Leaving Your Body Map

Interlude 3
14The Pineapple Thief
3000 Days

Dead In The Water/I Will Light Up Your Eyes/Snowdrops - Bruce Soord's voice is
best suited for these kind of mournful songs. Dead In The Water's ending consists
oh Bruce layering his vocals in beautiful harmonies with one another, which isn't
too dissimilar to that of I Will Light Up Your Eyes. Whilst the solo on I Will Light Up
Your Eyes isn't particularly very technical, simplicity brings in more of an emotional
aspect where it builds up, climaxes and comes down exquisitely. Snowdrops has
the perfect use of Bruce's delicate voice singing some of TPT's depressing lyrics.
13Vali
Skogslandskap

Himmelens Groenne Arr - The whole album is pretty beautiful in itself, but this is by
far the most emotional song on the album with the delicately picked guitar.
12Radiohead
Kid A

How To Disappear Completely - Thorm Yorke sounding broken and with so many
things on the song clashing, I think it reflects his feelings very well. Doesn't require
any other comment other than "I'm not here. This isn't happening".
11Alcest
Shelter

Delivrance - Can't understand a single thing in this song, but I think it works best
because I don't. The layered soulful crooning and strings create a blissful
atmosphere at the end once all other instruments are taken away.
10Olafur Arnalds
Found Songs

Raein/Ljosid - Similar to the songs on Eulogy, but somehow even more depressing.
Raein is exactly how it sounds and strings come crashing in together before they
are taken away equally which feels somewhat mournful.
9Olafur Arnalds
Eulogy For Evolution

0040/3055 - Minimal music can, at times, sound mediocre. However, Olafur Arnalds
can make it sound devastatingly isolated and touching. 0040 has some very chilling
piano followed by swelling strings that make me long for rainy days. 3055 is
probably the most beautiful song I've ever heard. It climaxes with drums, strings
and piano and it is incredibly graceful and moving to the point tears. More than
tears actually, but this was never a bad thing.
8Opeth
Watershed

Coil - Despite being only 3 minutes long, this can have a huge impact on me when I
listen to this. First of all, the guitar work on this is excellent and Natalie Lorichs
vocals are some of the most beautiful I've heard. The songs seems to bear a great
emotional weight and this can be heard clearly on both amazing chorus'.
7 Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven

T/t / Broken Windows - Whilst the whole album is great, these two segments in
particular are favourites. Took a while for both these songs to capture me but once
those strings come together, nothing is ever better. On both tracks, the strings
swell up from almost nowhere and are mixed in with some pretty interesting drum
patterns and other bits of lush layered rock. Lost for words for this one really...
6 Dream Theater
Metropolis Part 2

The Spirit Carries On - James Labrie's best performance in my opinion. This
captures Nicholas' feelings flawlessly in the context of the album. Whilst the singer
in the background is probably a bit too much, the huge solo and the passion on the
last chorus is what makes this song.
5Porcupine Tree
The Incident

I Drive The Hearse - A heartfelt vocal performance from Steve Wilson is what
makes this song so good. Whilst the brief solo before the second chorus is pretty
emotional, Wilson's cascading vocals on the chorus itself has more than once put
me to tears.
4Porcupine Tree
Deadwing

Start of Something Beautiful/Glass Arm Shattering - The latter is here because of
it's atmosphere and how it resonates bliss so effortlessly. The former, however, is
a much bigger affair. Section between 4.30-6.30 roughly is absolute heaven. the
build up and gradual layering of each instrument is stunningly beautiful, whilst the
sombre tone tears me up on every listen. It's rare that a song will ever put you in
such a state of relaxation and emotional grief, but this does it perfectly.
3Porcupine Tree
In Absentia

Trains/Heartattack In a Layby/Collapse The Light Into Earth - Trains is solely for
that incredible bridge section where Steve layers his la's and do's and in doing so,
makes that part sound so lush. The other two certainly have their climactic
moments such as the ending of Collapse The Light when the reverb and strings all
of a sudden kick in and a minute, it feels like you're floating seamlessly on clouds.
2Oneohtrix Point Never
R Plus Seven

Chrome Country - Manipulated choir voices never sounded too appealing on paper,
but on this is works very well. The layers of synths along with the in and out piano
notes really add something very relaxing to this song. However, the main focus is
during the last minute or so, when the organs come crashing into the track abruptly
in a heavenly way.
1Sigur Ros
Untitled 1

Whole EP + Untitled 3 from ( ) - The whole EP is full of atmospheric beauty. The
main song, Untitled 1 itself or "Vaka", is a proper tearjerker. Untitled 1 is fully
enjoyed with the video and brings me to tears watching and listening to it. From the
first few piano chords that repeat itself twice to Jonsi's lonely vocals that mean
nothing. But it's the section after where everyone starts crying. Strings all of a
sudden burst to life alongside Jonsi's manipulated vocals flying in and out to his
heavenly falsettos. Pure beauty its finest.
Untitled 3 is strangely one single piano rhythm. However in the background,
everything else in the background becoming more grand, louder and swelling
against the same piano rhythm for 4 whole minutes and then all of a sudden. Octave
change and of boy, does that cause some butterflies when I hear that.
