Arctic Monkeys Albums Ranked

I'm psyched to see Arctic Monkeys for the first time. And since it's going to be their first headlining festival gig in the US, I'm extremely stoked. So here's my ranking of their discography. Enjoy!
5Arctic Monkeys
Suck It and See

The only Arctic Monkeys album I don't listen to. I've only heard the full album 2 or 3 times, and
there is nothing that really interests me about SIAS. Even the singles are boring and uninspired
especially Brick by Brick. The lyrics are still really good, but Alex can't carry the whole album. I
don't love anything about SIAS, and it's a really disappointing release in my opinion but it's not
awful. It's just average. 3/5
I don't really know this album that well so here's some interesting Arctic Monkey facts:
*Fluorescent Adolescent was co written by Alex's then girlfriend Johanna Bennett.
*Matt Helder's biggest hero is John Bonham
*Suck It and See's title was briefly called thriller
*Brianstorm is about an odd fan who stuck into their dressing room in Osaka, Japan.
*505 samples part of the soundtrack of The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Humbug

Humbug was the first Arctic Monkeys album I've actually listened to, and it's definitely not the place to start with their
discography. Humbug takes quite a few listens to appreciate, and there are some really great Monkey songs on here. Humbug
was drastic departure from 2007's FWN. With Josh Homme producing this Arctic Monkeys release, the sound is much closer to
psychadelic rock instead of their brand of indie rock. And with this new territory for the Arctic Monkeys in sound comes a few
mistakes in the form of long drawn out tracks like the Jeweller's hand. Some of the songs just have too few interesting
musical elements to support their 4-5 minute run time. The most noticeable changes in sound from FWN to Humbug in my
opinion is the large difference in energy. But Humbug makes up for it with it's heavy unique guitar work and quite possibly
some of Alex Turner's best lyrics or at least his most creative lyrics. The album is also really varied musically with the heavy
rockin' Crying Lightning, the heartbreaking Cornerstone, and the organ filled Pretty Visitors. While the album is much less
accessible than their other releases, Humbug is really underrated and the mystical/psychedelic vibes are really captivating.
4/5
Some of my favorite lyrics from this album:
"With folded arms you occupied the bench like toothache
Stood and puffed your chest out like you'd never lost a war" -Crying Lightning
"It's a magnolia celebration
To be attempted on a Wednesday night
It's better than to get a reputation
As a miserable little tyke" -Secret Door
"If I could be someone else for a week,
I'd spend it chasing after you,
Cos she's not shattering my attitude" -Potion Approaching
"And I elongated my lift home,
Yeah I let him go the long way round
I smelt your scent on the seatbelt
And kept my shortcuts to myself" -Cornerstone
Favorite Tracks: Crying Lightning, Dangerous Animals, Secret Door, Potion Approaching, Cornerstone

Fun Fact: Alex Wrote a lot of the lyrics of Humbug in the middle of the night.

AM

Arctic Monkey's most recent album and comeback in my opinion. AM takes influence from many different genres, but
I'd say that Desert Rock and R&B elements are most prevelant. Songs like Do I Wanna Know? and RU Mine? have really
chilled sexy Riffs with hushed vocal melodies that are really catchy. Besides R U Mine? most of the songs slowly
buildup to a really groovy chill climax that's perfect for night driving. Whenever I'm driving on just in a car at night I
always think of playing this album. The drums are great with songs like R U Mine? and () really put Matt Helders in the
spotlight, but his drumming can also complement the different soft guitar tones very well. Alex's vocals are definitely
tighter on this release compared to their first 2, but his voice doesn't seem nearly as expressive. Josh Homme's
backing vocals on Knee Sock's are phenominal. While Alex's lyrics are still good, I don't think they are nearly as
memorable as Whatever and FWN, but they get the idea cross still very well. There are also a few songs that I don't
care for as much like: I Wanna Be Yours and I Want It all, but all the other songs are very catchy and memorable.
4.5/5
Some of my Favorite Lyrics From the Album:
"Arabella's got some interstellar-gator skin boots
And a helter skelter 'round her little finger and I ride it endlessly" -Arabella
"The look of love - the rush of blood
The "She's with me" - the Gallic shrug" -No 1. Party Anthem
"Somewhere darker
Talking the same shite
I need a partner
Well, are you out tonight?" -Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?"
"You and me could have been a team
Each had a half of a king and queen seat
Like the beginning of Mean Streets
You could Be My Baby" -Knee Socks
Favorite Tracks: Do I Wanna Know?, R U Mine?, Arabella, No 1. Party Anthem, Knee Socks

Fun Fact: AM's title was inspired by Velvet Underground's compilation album VU.

Favourite Worst Nightmare

The followup to Whatever, Favourite Worst Nightmare is just as great if not better at times when compared
to their debut album. Although Whatever has always been my favorite and I can listen to it endlessly. FWN
has really grown on me recently, and the amount of energy the first four songs of FWN has is unmatched by
any other Monkeys release. You can't help but to jam along when songs like Brianstorm and Teddy Picker
come up. The sound is also heavier than their first release, which is a nice change from the lightness in
sound of their debut. The drumming is once again great especially on D is for Dangerous. The lyrics are also
great honestly every Monkeys album is great lyrically. But Alex's singing in my opinion is much better on their
early releases his voice shows a lot more emotion on Whatever and FWN compared to SIAS and AM. FWN has
a lot more chilled out and slow songs compared their debut but just about all of them build up to a loud
climax that is pretty satisfying especially on 505, but none of them are done as well as A Certain Romance.
The first half is definitely front loaded with the best tracks, but all the songs are great. 4.5/5
Some of my favorite lyrics from the album:
"And it's the thousandth time and it's even bolder,
Don't be surprised when you get bent over" -Teddy Picker
"You used to get it in your fishnets
Now you only get it in your night dress
Discarded all the naughty nights for niceness
Landed in a very common crisis
Everything's in order in a black hole
Nothing seems as pretty as the past though
That Bloody Mary's lacking in Tabasco
Remember when you used to be a rascal?" -Fluorescent Adolescent
"And do me a favour, and ask if you need some help!
She said, do me a favour and stop flattering yourself!" -Do Me a Favour
"I'm going back to 505,
If it's a 7 hour flight or a 45 minute drive,
In my imagination you're waiting lying on your side,
With your hands between your thighs" -505
Favorite Songs: Teddy Picker, Fluorescent Adolescent, Do Me a Favour, Old Yellow Bricks, 505

Fun Fact: One of the titles the bands considered for the album was Lesbian Wednesdays.

Whatever People Say I Am...

Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not became the fast selling debut album in the UK. It
was released to critical acclaim and Arctic Monkeys became one of the first bands to become really
popular through word of mouth over the internet. This album was a real game changer, and it's the
first Arctic Monkey's album I fell in love with. Whatever is the reason why I love the Arctic Monkeys.
The energy on this album is incredible, and the slower softer songs like Mardy Bum break the tension
without completely slowing it down. All the songs are very catchy and satisfying with a lo-fi/gritty
production. The interplay between the guitars and base are really well done and pretty groovy
actually. Matt Helder's drumming is also very hard hitting and impactful without taking attention
away from the fantastic guitar work. The lyrics are also are amazing. Alex Turner is an exceptional
lyricist, the songs are all very cleverly written with a ton of sarcastic humor and intelligent insights
on Britain's nightlife. The buildup of A Certain Romance is perfect it just transitions from quiet to loud
very well. Truly an extraordinary song. I love every song on this album. 5/5
Some of my favorite lyrics from the album:
"And all the weekend rock stars in the toilets
Practicing their lines" -Fake Tales of San Francisco
"Anticipation has the habit to set you up
For disappointment in evening entertainment but
Tonight there'll be some love" -The View From the Afternoon
"Because she must be fucking freezing
Scantily clad beneath the clear night sky
it doesn't stop in the winter, no" -When The Sun Goes Down
"Have you been drinking, son? You don't look old enough to me."
"I'm sorry, officer, is there a certain age you're supposed to be? 'Cause nobody told me."
-Riot Van
Favorite Tracks: The View From the Afternoon, Fake Tales of San Francisco, Mardy Bum,
When the Sun Goes Down, A Certain Romance

Fun Fact: The concept of this album loosely revolves around the lives of young North England
clubbers
