Friday13th
05.01.14 | Due to the success of the ingeniously named Elite Prog Contest, I decided to kick off May with its
psychedelic counterpart. Rec any psych rock album under 40 votes on sputnik and give a sentence or two
of why it's groovy. PLEASE ONLY REC AN ALBUM IF YOU PLAN TO JOIN IN THE CONTEST! I thought I made
myself clear last contest but some people didn't participate though the rest of us gave their album a
fair listen. You don't have to rec to join in the listening and voting, but the inverse does apply. |
menawati
05.01.14 | are you counting space rock as psych for this ? |
Friday13th
05.01.14 | I want to stay close to the genre, so if it's closer to prog than psych then no. What album did you have in mind? |
menawati
05.01.14 | hmm maybe something by Colour Haze, but yeh i understand what you mean with that, a lot of krautrock is sorta in between psych and prog |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy
05.01.14 | third eye blind - blue |
Friday13th
05.01.14 | @menawati Yeah some stuff is right smack in the middle.
I think Colour Haze should be okay since they're cited as "stoner/psych" though I've never heard them. If you think stoner is like 80% of their sound and psych is something they just dabble in I'd say do something else. |
Friday13th
05.01.14 | lol foxxxy good one |
menawati
05.01.14 | yeh psych is pretty broad goes all the way from whimsical little acid songs to full blown droning stuff |
menawati
05.01.14 | i'll get insomniac to enter a motorpsycho one so i can save a nomination ha |
WeepingBanana
05.01.14 | high speed and the afflicted man
t2 |
Friday13th
05.01.14 | @spooky not sure if your serious or you just like boobs. Your reputation precedes you :P
@WeepingBanana which album dude? I see two bands. |
Friday13th
05.01.14 | ...and spooky changed his rec just to get me to say "boobs." Clever. |
WeepingBanana
05.01.14 | take a wild guess |
Friday13th
05.01.14 | I don't think you guys understand how this works. |
zakalwe
05.01.14 | Blimey you didn't hang around getting this up and running did ya Friday pal!
Fraction - Moon Blood
If you hung with Jim Morrisson this would undoubtedly be the soundtrack as you drop acid in the dessert. |
Friday13th
05.01.14 | yay zakalwe! Always bringing the goods. |
menawati
05.01.14 | damn i was actually thinking of nominating moon blood, great record |
zakalwe
05.01.14 | Sorry dude |
menawati
05.01.14 | no im chuffed its in it, leaves me free for something else |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.01.14 | Culpeper's Orchard - Culpeper's Orchard. Album's full of epic psychedelic and heavy guitar solos |
menawati
05.01.14 | Think this'll be blown away by the heavier dronier stuff but i'll go for Country Joe and the Fish - Electric Music for the Mind and Body because I could happily listen to Section 43 on repeat for a year |
Friday13th
05.01.14 | what do you guys think, should we give spooky a chance? |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.01.14 | Yeah, he's friendly =} |
menawati
05.01.14 | yes of course we should and ozric are cool anyway |
zakalwe
05.01.14 | I can vouch for Spooky he will commit. |
Friday13th
05.01.14 | he's kinda a confirmed troll...but what the heck! |
Jethro42
05.01.14 | I don't feel like home here, really. But I'm gonna follow this nonetheless, guys. |
Friday13th
05.01.14 | I've never even heard of the bands being rec'd so it's all good. |
TwigTW
05.01.14 | Earthless - From the Ages
This is what I imagine Woodstock was like. |
MeatSalad
05.01.14 | T2 - it'll all work out in boomland
Rocks hard, psychs hard, even progs a bit with some really beautiful moments scattered throughout |
mandan
05.01.14 | Dunno if I'll take part in this one. Enjoy guys. |
Friday13th
05.01.14 | T2 is on the fine line between psych and prog but I'll let it slide because it rules. |
MeatSalad
05.01.14 | They lean more towards psych with their sound imo |
emester
05.01.14 | Jeruselum- s/t
Psych tinged hard rock produced by Ian Gillan. also has some hints of early metal here too. |
MeatSalad
05.01.14 | @danny at least listen to the albums, guarantee you'll find some good shit |
TheSpaceMan
05.01.14 | nvm |
Friday13th
05.01.14 | Don't get why so many album arts won't work : |
TheSpaceMan
05.01.14 | just saw your cap on number of votes so scratch my rec :/ |
menawati
05.01.14 | when you edit lists it can get fked up, jethro knows how it works he can actually predict what goes wrong when you edit things haha |
Friday13th
05.01.14 | @emester I've heard some of that and not sure you could call it pysch. Can someone back him? |
Shuyin
05.01.14 | Monkey3 - 39 Laps |
Jethro42
05.01.14 | Can I change my mind?
Hypnos 69 - Legacy
This album offers long composed suites with spacey instrumental breaks and concise improvisations.
|
emester
05.01.14 | eh if its not what you want then its not what you want :) let me come up with something else |
menawati
05.01.14 | hard rock innit ? |
zakalwe
05.01.14 | That's the spirit Jethro. Topman! |
MeatSalad
05.01.14 | Basically anything with an apostrophe or anything like that gets fucked when you edit |
menawati
05.01.14 | 1st track of that hypnos 69 album is one of my favorite songs, some great stuff going up on here |
Jethro42
05.01.14 | Cheers zak! Music flirts dangerously with prog though... |
Jethro42
05.01.14 | Culpeper's Orchard and Ozric Tentacles tend to be prog too |
mandan
05.01.14 | @Meat: I'll follow up on the tourney, and see which albums rise to the top. Might jam a couple. |
MeatSalad
05.01.14 | Psych flirts with prog by nature |
emester
05.01.14 | How about this?
Dead Meadow- Howls From The Hills
Psych rock made only a bit more than 10 years ago and still sounds as if it were a time capsule from the late 60's / early 70's |
zakalwe
05.01.14 | Hang on whole things going to have to be aborted. I've just noticed I spelt desert with two s'. What an absolute dill. |
menawati
05.01.14 | great shout emester, pity their debut got more than 40 votes |
emester
05.01.14 | yeah man its great stuff |
Jethro42
05.01.14 | @MeatSalad; on condition prog is not proeminent. |
Friday13th
05.01.14 | @Shuyin give me sentence about why you think it's cool
@emester that should do it |
MeatSalad
05.01.14 | Zak you fucked up m8 |
zakalwe
05.01.14 | Oh well acid in the dessert works as well :D |
Onirium
05.01.14 | Patrick Watson - Close to Paradise
A life-changing, very deep and thoughtful psych folk/dream pop album. The absolute blend between incredibly strong songwriting and intriguing experimental arrangements |
MeatSalad
05.01.14 | Jammed most of these already but still looking forward to this hard |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | @Onirium Under 40 votes, dude. |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | @zakalwe fix'd ;) |
TwigTW
05.02.14 | I don't know . . I liked the idea of dropping acid in the dessert. |
emester
05.02.14 | @Friday13th I actually found something else. Mind if I change my selection
35007- Liquid
Instrumental space rock with psychedelic elements dispersed throughout its entirety. Possibly one of the greatest instrumental
albums ever |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | lol needs exposure I get it |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | Motorpsycho-Timothy's Monster
just an incredible psychedelic ride |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | @emester sure thing, man.
@spooky too late! |
emester
05.02.14 | Thanks! Really appreciate it! |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | you mad, bro? haha no seriously no nip photos in my lists |
emester
05.02.14 | @ Friday just a heads up u forgot my name in the description XD
EDIT: Thanks man! Real excited to see how this turns out! |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | I'm not directing people to a youtube video of a nip either lol |
emester
05.02.14 | spooky's ghost hormones are going nuts |
MeatSalad
05.02.14 | Do nips offend you friday? Are you scared of the breast? |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.02.14 | Poor spooky, tries to be serious and no one believes him =[ |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.02.14 | Not but seriously, Muzak sounds very promising |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | uhh, I'd like to change it to
Truckfighters-Phi
it's just one of the grooviest things I've ever heard, almost endless replay value imo(actually, I'll
save it for a possible sequel contest) |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | I make one exception for emester and everyone wants to change. |
emester
05.02.14 | Nice choice Shark!
jammed to them quite a lot last summer |
emester
05.02.14 | sorry ;_; |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | No changes and that's final! Except for Jethro, of course. |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | no, I just didn't word it correctly: I wanted to CHANGE the suggestion to Truckfighters-Phi, |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.02.14 | Let them change dude, the artworks are already pretty fucked up |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | I just switched my feelings back to Motorpsycho
DAMMIT I CAN'T DECIDE BETWEEN THE TWO!!!!
(keep it Motorpsycho, hopefully you make a second overlooked psychadelic contest where I can suggest Truckfighters) |
Onirium
05.02.14 | Ok sorry I thought my rec had Under 40 votes. Then it's going to be:
Patrick Watson - Adventures in Your Own Backyard
A life-changing, very deep and thoughtful psych folk/dream pop album. The absolute blend between incredibly strong songwriting and intriguing experimental arrangements |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | life-changing eh
alright, 5 more to go |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | if only I could request a second): |
Jethro42
05.02.14 | Patrick Watson is cool and all but I'm not sure he can fit here. He's more like an alt/indie singer songwriter a la Jeff Buckley, or maybe it's just me. |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | Jeff Buckley won't fly. Is this true, Onirium? |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | he seems more like an indie artist imo, but if he sounds consistently psychedelic throughout the
course of the album I'm all for it |
Onirium
05.02.14 | Ok then:
Patrick Watson - Wooden Arms
same description |
Onirium
05.02.14 | it's more psychedelic |
Jethro42
05.02.14 | Patrick Watson's first track;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R23bifAbWWs
EDIT; Don't consider my post then. |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | It seems like EVERY Patrick Wilson album is life-changing lol |
Onirium
05.02.14 | @Jehtro: Yeah Adventures is a more stripped-down and singer-songwriter album, but Close to Paradise and Wooden Arms are psychedelic (not the most psychedelic thing ever, but yeah) |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | @Jethro
okay now that's pretty trippy |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.02.14 | Can I nominate Ride the Lightning? :D |
Jethro42
05.02.14 | Listening to Wooden Arms atm, and I'm skeptical about his psych leanings. He tends to be more like a singer songwriter with clever arrangements, but with no trace of psych according to me. |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | @MySirLordGentleman
no, but you CAN nominate truckfighters xD |
Onirium
05.02.14 | @Jethro: Well, it has a psychedelic feel imo and is one of the most awesome things I've ever heard, so I guess you guys should to check it out even if it's not accepted as psych |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | If it wasn't passed as psychadelic what would you suggest?
(please let it be that certain album I am treating like it was my baby 'cause it's so good it might as
well be my baby) |
Jethro42
05.02.14 | I'm not trying to discredit Patrick Watson. He's an incredible artist, but I just think personally that he doesnt have his place on here, even if he has his scattered ''spacey'' moments. |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | Friday should make an 'underappreciated indie contest' where you can suggest Wilson. This doesn't seem like the best place |
Onirium
05.02.14 | No I understand, Jethro. I was just saying he was worth checking out even though he's not considered psychedelic |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | ...AFTER he makes an 'overlooked psych contest 2' where I suggest Phi(; |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | @Onirium
oh I'll check him out, he seems really cool! Although 'life-changing'....we'll see about that |
Onirium
05.02.14 | @SharkTooth: Okay, maybe check out Close to Paradise first, I'd say it's the best starting point |
Jethro42
05.02.14 | ''No I understand, Jethro. I was just saying he was worth checking out even though he's not considered psychedelic''
Definitely agree with you, Onirium. The man can be folk, ambient, post rock to an extent and he's really varied into his instrumental passages. Really versatile. I'm gonna listen to his music more, now that you put it on the map |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | Okay Watson is out then. Do you have any others, Onirium? You can't go wrong with the late 60s just sayin |
Onirium
05.02.14 | "Although 'life-changing'....we'll see about that"
Ok I agree I may have exaggerated it a bit, but it actually had an influence on my life. |
Jethro42
05.02.14 | :D |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | @Onirium
Plz request truckfighters
(REQUESTCEPTION) |
Onirium
05.02.14 | Yeah, I don't know, I'm looking in my music library atm to see if I can find some good overlooked psychedelic. I'll probably find something |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | dissapointment): |
Jethro42
05.02.14 | Patrick Watson rules, I can repeat it again
dissapointment):[2] |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | Patrick Watson rules, I can repeat it again[2] |
Onirium
05.02.14 | Ok guys I've got something:
H.P. Lovecraft - H.P. Lovecraft II
Very trippy, folk-tinged psychedelic rock, that presents an awesome set of songs and a lot of very intriguing moments and interesting ideas |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | dammit we need 5 more albums, I want this thing to start already! |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | So far it's all sweet stuff |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | You already listened to all of these?? |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | no haha just snippets as I collect on youtube and grooveshark |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | I use spotify, it's easier to track down albums with |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.02.14 | I always like to download the albums, dunno why, so this list will probably add another GB to my iPod |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | spotify dude, you can stream entire albums with it, and not have to download anything |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | true but grooveshark is better on iphones cause it doesn't have forced shuffle |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | Doesn't Grooveshark only work with jailbreak? |
PunchforPunch
05.02.14 | Black Bombaim - Saturdays and Space Travels
Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs
Cold Sun - Dark Shadows |
Onirium
05.02.14 | No Grooveshark actually works without jailbreak too. The site has a lot of flaws but I still prefer it to spotify too. |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | @punchforpunch Deserter's Songs has too many votes,
so you gotta choose between Black Bombaim and Cold sun |
PunchforPunch
05.02.14 | aight its La Novia by Acid Mothers Temple |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | yeah Punch choose one of those and give me a brief summary why it's cool
edit: or why novia is cool |
PunchforPunch
05.02.14 | mainly cuz of the 40 minutes title track. its just blissout spacey noisy psych to the max. |
PunchforPunch
05.02.14 | and they're japs |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | great, now 4 albums left(and sadly none of them will be Truckfighters): |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.02.14 | create an alt and nominate it :D |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | uhh, Friday....can you get to putting it on the list? |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | damn accented "o" doesn't work |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | you don't need the accent, just type o and it'll work by itself |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.02.14 | How is it that no one tries to fix this site?, there are tons of fails |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | apparently there is this guy in charge of all the technical fixing and stuff but he hasn't been online in a while or something like that |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | huh, so it still didn't work.../: |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | well, just four albums left, we can make it(I think) |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.02.14 | At least when the contest starts the won't be need to edit the lists, so the artworks should work |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | well yeah there'll only be like 2 albums on each round |
JamieTwort
05.02.14 | The Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound - When Sweet Sleep Returned
Cos it's some of the best neo-psych (if you wanna call it that) I've heard. 'By the Rippling Green' is a modern psych classic. |
MisterTornado
05.02.14 | Vinyl Williams - Lemniscate: Sorely overlooked visionary bedroom psychedelia ~
Magic Castles - Magic Castles: Hazy neo-psychs for the English countryside ~
Night Beats - Night Beats: Wonderful garage influenced psych that's full of energy and smokey hooks ~ |
manosg
05.02.14 | I regret not having participated in the Elite Prog contest so I'll join you guys on this one. My suggestion would be the album I reviewed yesterday Quintessence (Eng) - In Blissful Company. It's mainly psych so I think it qualifies even though it's got some prog too. If you want a description you can use "East meets West on this progressive acid trip. What’s not to like?".
Also, I see some damn fine choices. Namely, Culpeper's Orchard and T2. T2 may go all the way. |
insomniac15
05.02.14 | Motorpsycho - Black Hole/Black Canvas or Little Lucid Moments for those bring me back the early 70s psych rock moments.
Also, check out Methadone Skies - Enter The Void. |
Mad.
05.02.14 | Methadone Skies - Enter The Void
6 tracks of explosive psychedelic instrumental stoner-rock, taking the form of a journey through an unknown metaphysical 'void.' |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | @insomniac I have a 1 album per band limit so motorpsycho is out and Mad is doing Methadone Skies so sorry try something else |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | @MisterTornado choose one dude.
There's one spot left! |
zakalwe
05.02.14 | Blue Wire by JTs rec is classic I've been meaning to check their stuff out. I love these tourneys. |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | Blue Wire doesn't have an album entry on Sputnik/: |
Shuyin
05.02.14 | 'give me sentence about why you think it's cool'
Monkey3 - 39 Laps
spacious, dreamy and impulsive stowing sound pallet. in other words, it fucking rules |
Friday13th
05.02.14 | CLOSED alright then. Behold...the fellowship of the psych! |
JamieTwort
05.02.14 | "Blue Wire doesn't have an album entry on Sputnik/:"
That's because it's a song (by the band I rec'd).
This is looking much better than the prog tourney, much better albums in this one in my opinion. |
menawati
05.02.14 | everything ive heard on here i like and suspect i will probably like those i havent heard, going to be hard to vote |
emester
05.02.14 | Pretty excited for this! Going to be very, very hard to vote (unless its 35007 ;]) |
manosg
05.02.14 | Yeah lots of great stuff on here. Jamming It's a Beautiful Day at the moment and it's really good. |
emester
05.02.14 | @Manosg Checked out Quintessence yesterday. Great stuff. |
manosg
05.02.14 | Glad you enjoyed it man! |
TwigTW
05.02.14 | Listening to a sample from each and they all sound good (in different ways). |
SharkTooth
05.02.14 | LETS GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD!!! |
insomniac15
05.04.14 | Aww, too late to give another record. Maybe next time I can add an entry. |
Mad.
05.04.14 | So unfair Saturnia's not allowed, it's an awesome album and I doubt anyone would be offended by a nipple, it's only society telling you to be offended |
Friday13th
05.04.14 | Nope it was my personal morals. He already submitted another album so the way I see it I was not obligated to change based on his whim. Go listen to it if you like. |
Mad.
05.04.14 | well what's morally wrong about a nipple then? |
menawati
05.04.14 | if its on the end of a man boob it's questionable |
Friday13th
12.13.14 | IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
New “Obscure Prog Contest” will open this Thursday (around noon North American central time). Be ready if you want to be one of the 16 contestants! Same criteria as last time: submit any one obscure progressive rock album under 30 votes on sputnik. Double check the “elite prog” contest to make sure you don't submit a repeat. Further rules will be specified on Thursday. |
Mad.
12.13.14 | The question still remains, what is morally wrong about a nipple? |
