05.01.14 | Hit the nail on the fucking head with all points, great list!
"What record player should i buy?"
What I did is I looked through random online classifieds (craigslist, kijiji and whatnot) and eventually found a pretty decent used player (from 1979 I believe) for 30$. You can look through thrift stores and pawn shops too. It takes time and patience but if you look long and hard enough you could get lucky too |

05.01.14 | if I had disposable income out the wazoo i would totally do vinyl, but that's not financially feasible for me |

Agree with the four listed points as well. Wax is loads of fun. |

05.01.14 | @danielito19 I always make sure I've got some spare change for vinyl, and good coffee, 2 things I currently can't see myself living without.
@Muisc4Life26 I'm not sure about what the best option is for you, but I have an audio-technical AT-LP60-USB Stereo Turntable. It's nothing flashy, but the sound is good, has a clean look about it, and comes with software to convert vinyl to digital format, so I really enjoy having it. Also you can get it for $100-150. |

05.01.14 | "comes with software to convert vinyl to digital format"
Well you can do that with any TT using Audacity. For those that don't have a USB outlet you just get a wire that converts the RCA cables into something that can plug into your comps mic port. |

05.01.14 | @neurisis I agree that it's def convenient but there are quite a few things that bug me about those cheaper vinyl to MP3 TTs (I started off with one as well, the Ion Profile Pro).
First off the fact that you don't have the strobe to check speed (I always had doubts that my old TT played a little too fast but couldn't check), second the fact that you can't adjust the tracking weight, fusing the cartridge to the tone arm is especially annoying since it really limits the range of customization you have (and cartridges wear out over time so what do you do then) and finally the built in pre-amp, although useful, also limits what you can choose to do with the TT. |

05.01.14 | One of the big issues I have with forking out on a vinyl is I just know that I won't be able to resist the urge to scratch the fuck out of them thinking im Terminator X. Yeeah Boi!!! |
neurisis17
05.01.14 | @SCREAM! haha you're obviously a lot more seasoned than I am, I haven't run into any problems thus far with mine, so I really haven't been able to compare this turntable to my dad's that I was using before (some JVC thing from the mid 80's). However, when I do have more cash to throw around, I'll be investing in a higher quality TT and sound system, with more room for (like you pointed out) customization. |
SCREAM!
05.01.14 | I did a lot of researching while I was browsing around looking for a new TT haha I still consider my knowledge to be somewhat basic compared to a lot of the stuff I would stumble upon in forums. Really interesting stuff to know about though |

05.01.14 | The thing about records is, no matter how well you take care of them every day, it only takes one great party to ruin a vinyl collection. |

05.01.14 | I have a really shitty all-in-one stereo system so I can play records and tapes. But it still is a fun experience even if it sounds worse than it should |

05.01.14 | In terms of a decent set up that won't lead me to eating lentils for the rest of me days to keep on the breadline what's an expected price to pay for a good system? |

05.01.14 | One new CD costs $12-20. One new LP often costs $18-25 (unless it's special edition, 2 X LP, or some other dumb reason). Used ones cost even less
if you collect any form of physical music vinyl is pretty similar in price, and even if you grab like a $40 gatefold record you usually get like a poster and awesome art |
Wafflez
05.01.14 | I could barely pay for a pair of Ath m50's, I live in a third world country and I'm 17 year olds with no means of income. So yeah. :C |
ZombicidalMan
05.01.14 | fair enough man, you should download music and save your money for better things like most people, lol. I still agree vinyl is expensive. I just blew $200 on 8 records. |
menawati
05.01.14 | cant see how vinyl would sound better than CD these days as most is re-issues mastered from CD source, maybe if it's old original master, but even then usually what you hear as being 'warmer' from good LPs is due to a nice form of distortion in the bass |
DominionMM1
05.01.14 | "most is re-issues mastered from CD source"
those are called bootlegs bro. i don't buy bootlegs. |
menawati
05.01.14 | i meant using digital remasters instead of the original analog tapes |
lyzakthellama
05.01.14 | digital remasters arent really any different in quality from the original recording. Just mixed and mastered better, the frequency response and bandwidth would still be the same. |
menawati
05.01.14 | Has been more processing going on though and in any analog to digital you always lose something (and maybe add something too depending on what the software does), so when you got an old LP you got analog to digital then back to analog. but I guess there are bad analog masters too anyway. As long as you like the sound personally doesnt really matter i guess. |
Emyay
05.01.14 | thinking about buying a TT. do people plug headphones into them, or is that a dumb thing to do? i'd like to put one in my front room and just sit in there alone and listen on headphones |
menawati
05.01.14 | output from a TT very low, you preferably need an amp with a dedicated phono input like an old cheap
NAD 3020 or something, maybe there are some headphone amps that'dd cater for it too i dunno |
