Friday13th
04.23.14 | Closes Friday afternoon |
menawati
04.23.14 | got the LP of 2 amazing gatefold art |
mandan
04.23.14 | It's you and me mena, sweet.
Need to jam Risveglio. |
zakalwe
04.23.14 | Round 8 and I've grown a full on beard, my cape stinks of pipe weed and I have got a serious case of Yonin Bayashi sloth red eye.
Onwards and upwards let's see what 1 is like. |
menawati
04.23.14 | saw pallas live once, they played arrive alive, was sweet |
zakalwe
04.23.14 | Were you drinking five alive to survive when you saw Pallas play arrive live. |
menawati
04.23.14 | no, warm weak lager in a plastic cup probably |
zakalwe
04.23.14 | lol. |
SCREAM!
04.23.14 | Not sure what I think of 2 so far. It's definitely more on the poppy side than what I usually listen to |
menawati
04.23.14 | first 2 on that are lightweight yes but it gets meatier later in |
SCREAM!
04.23.14 | Arrive Alive was pretty poppy as well although I'll admit it was a lot of fun |
Friday13th
04.23.14 | 2 is what Asia should have been |
Onirium
04.23.14 | Well, 1 is the best thing of this contest so far in my opinion. Really really good stuff, thanks mena! I have not jammed 2 yet, so I can't vote for now, but 1 is definitely a high 4 or a low 4.5. Would eventually be an important opponent to Yonin Bayashi in my opinion |
menawati
04.23.14 | p/ |
Jethro42
04.23.14 | Yes, that album is imo what the whole contest has to offer the best. |
zakalwe
04.24.14 | 1 rocks harder than 2 whereas 2 progs harder than 1.
It's a close call. |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.24.14 | 1 all the way |
mandan
04.24.14 | Haven't heard 1 yet, been busy. Will do my best to jam it before voting closes. |
MeatSalad
04.24.14 | Uh oh 2 albums I haven't heard |
mandan
04.24.14 | 2 seems to have gotten a good reception, so I really don't care all that much for winning. The fact that people enjoyed it is its own victory for me. |
MeatSalad
04.24.14 | I feel thats the real point of this contest anyway, at least it should be |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.24.14 | Meat knows what's up, 2 rules too |
menawati
04.24.14 | definitely, dont really care what wins this thing but i think my little rec has reached a few new people and i've found a few new things i like too so it's worthwhile already |
menawati
04.24.14 | but drop 'elite' from the titles of these it makes it sound like a little club of dickheads (haha maybe that's true but don't advertise it), use the word 'under-appreciated' or something |
Friday13th
04.24.14 | ^haha there's no hiding the truth |
Jethro42
04.24.14 | I easily prefer the classic prog rock album Risveglio. While there are some interesting songs of Pallas, I have some difficulties with the neo-prog genre. I think the only neo-prog bands I really enjoy are Marillion and Arena. The problem with that sub-genre is that they're strongly influenced by the classic prog rock of the 70s, but they're overall missing the point with there poppy sounding and the (often) dominant modern keyboards. Pallas seems to be guitar dominant though. Pallas apparently did very well with ''The Cross and the Crucible'' that I'm gonna listen to as soon as possible. |
menawati
04.24.14 | the wedge was ok too, got to admit i love shock treatment on 2 |
zakalwe
04.24.14 | Is there any fairly recent album that has made it through? |
menawati
04.24.14 | well mines 2011 if it makes it through |
zakalwe
04.24.14 | It's edging it for me at the min but I'm going to give em both a few spins. |
Jethro42
04.24.14 | I haven't noticed the great Pallas songs on here but there are some for sure. But the overall style of the album failed to convince me. |
menawati
04.24.14 | it was a huge flop, think the record company dropped them after it, for me the longer pieces on it could have been great but somehow fall short |
Jethro42
04.24.14 | That would make sense, and I agree about the longer pieces. |
mandan
04.25.14 | Jammin' Egonon. Don't think it's really my thing, but I see how this goes. |
mandan
04.25.14 | Yeah, I don't seem to click with Egonon that well. Switched to Pallas. |
mandan
04.25.14 | I'll be submitting my vote soon. |
mandan
04.25.14 | I might 5 The Sentinel eventually, it just gets better and better for me. |
mandan
04.25.14 | My vote goes to Pallas by a mile. |
zakalwe
04.25.14 | Mine to Egonon by a cm. |
mandan
04.25.14 | You're still my bro zak, don't worry. |
zakalwe
04.25.14 | :D |
Friday13th
04.25.14 | It's a tough one, but I'm going with Pallas. I have deep respect for any band that progged hard in the 80s. |
Onirium
04.25.14 | Egonon definitely gets my vote. It's perhaps the best thing I've heard this year, and an awesome modern prog masterpiece. A strong 4.5
Pallas had some great songs and is for sure an excellent neo-prog album. The problem is: neo-prog is really not my thing as I usually can't stand its new wave influences. No neo-prog album could ever equal 70s classic prog quality in my opinion, except maybe Misplaced Childhood. Blame it on the 80s |
Friday13th
04.25.14 | Bring the votes in! Right now it's 4-2 counting Gentleman, Jethro, zakalwe, danny, Onirium and me. |
Friday13th
04.25.14 | The sitar on 1 is sweet |
menawati
04.25.14 | well if you are going to count votes from the people who submitted them then obviously i vote for 1 |
Friday13th
04.25.14 | CLOSED. Egonon wins 5-2 and Round #2 is underway. |
mandan
04.25.14 | I am graceful in defeat. |
Jethro42
04.25.14 | I'm still not sure on what rating I should give to the Sentinel, but one thing is sure, I've just listened to The Dreams of Men, and it's almost a 4.5 for me already. The Cross and the Crucible is supposed to be just as great. |
menawati
04.26.14 | never heard it, only ever heard sentinel and the wedge, sentinel is 3.5 for me so im guessing dreams of men is a lot better |
Jethro42
04.26.14 | Songs on Dreams of Men sometimes sound like classic prog of the 70s, they are well crafted. I think they use some vintage keyboards, organ and they do some well done classical arrangements. There are no fillers, songs are great and album is consistent. |
menawati
04.26.14 | think ill listen when i get bored with this anathema record, which wont take long |
menawati
04.26.14 | oh yes this is quite different they've totally lost that annoying 80's new wave spandau ballet vibe on this |
Jethro42
04.26.14 | That's right ;) |
