Italian Prog - Top 30

Thirty favourite all-time RPI (Rock Progressivo Italiano). If you like rGenesis, Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull etc you should find lots you like in here.
1Quella Vecchia Locanda
Quella Vecchia Locanda

Brilliant atmospheric and emotive classic prog from 1972, strong baroque violin
influences and lots of flute, ghost of Vivaldi on violin, their other album Il Tempo
Della Gioia is also superb.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNc7u38vk5Y
2Franco Battiato
Sulle Corde Di Aries

One of the most famous Italian singers. Has done loads of different things from
classical influenced, light entertainment and pop. This is from his experimental
era and is a brilliant psychedelic tinged ride with hypnotic rhythms. If you like
early Pink Floyd you will love this.

3Egonon
Risveglio

Thrilling and endlessly creative symphonic prog from 2011. Whole mix of sounds,
traditional classical instruments, strong North African flavor, smooth electric guitar
riffs and a very organic feel overall. Lots going on but still great tunes. One of best
prog albums of this century.

4Premiata Forneria Marconi
Storia Di un Minuto

This and Per Un Amico are genuine classics. By far the most famous RPI group.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0JNhd9Hhpc
5Le Orme
Felona E Sorona

These, Banco and PFM are often called the big 3 of the classic RPI period.
Keyboard centric with lots of classical influences. This and Uomo Di Pezza
essential.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVLTsOm5PkI
6 il Bacio Della Medusa
Discesa agl'inferi d'un giovane amante

Contemporary RPI band, typical prog symphonic sounds, lots of flute, their best
album by far.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEcnrxbNMVQ (album sampler)
7Banco Del mutuo Soccorso
Io sono Nato Libero

One of the big 3 original RPI bands. Their first 5 or 6 are all worth trying especially
this and Darwin!. if you like the usual 70s prog stuff you need to check these out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-nFUmUk90A
8Ingranaggi Della Valle
In Hoc Signo

Best RPI album of 2013. Fusion edged symphonic prog. Like a modern version of
classic period PFM. Superb.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_9W6V4bQEg
9Osanna
Palepoli

Another classic 70s RPI band. Not quite up there with the best but a bit heavier
than usual in the genre and lots of flute if you like that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qMGj1ZaZUI
10Museo Rosenbach
Zarathustra

One of the RPI classics. They didn't do anything else of note though. Strong
Genesis influences.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqZZwrc-BNM
11Il Tempio delle Clessidre
Il Tempio delle Clessidre

Modern italian prog band who follow the 70s symphonic style. Retro sounds and
great musicianship.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cphTEfJaPx0
12Alphataurus
Alphataurus

Another 70s classic. Very dynamic with lots of light and shade on here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlEbUqOPWs8
13Celeste (Italy)
Principe di un Giorno

Rustic atmosphere with lots of acoustic guitars and flute. Delicate stuff, if you like
Harmonium you will like this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpWUDMMQ5_Q
14Area
Arbeit Macht Frei

One of the weirder RPI bands. Also damn weird cover art. More jazz fusion based
than most Italian prog. Takes a while to get into.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUg6keKtJc4
15La coscienza di zeno
La coscienza di zeno

Great record from 2011. Trad symphonic RPI with a bit of melodic 80's neo prog
thrown in (aka Fish-era Marillion).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHVLYRrWkcg
16Maxophone
Maxophone

One album wonder. The horns and trumpets give this a great feel. A bit like a
classical jazz infused Genesis. Really inventive.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpRSoCtVnfQ
17Three Monks
The Legend of the Holy Circle

Pipe-organ centric RPI with a distinct gothic feel. A bit like a satanic Rick Wakeman
as Captain Nemo in a panto trading organ riffs with Keith Emerson.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFpb4q1KY_0
18Semiramis
Dedicato a Frazz

Remarkable 'one-shot' album from a bunch of teens in 1973. Loads of energy and
more up front than a lot of Italian prog. Mostly guitar driven.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbU0XJGrKg8
19Reale Accademia di Musica
Reale Accademia di Musica

Another one-shot outfit. Lots of piano, organ and mellotron. Lush tunes with
almost oriental feel at times. Honky tonk prog.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWa5u0Kf66U
20 Biglietto Per L'Inferno
Biglietto Per L'Inferno

At the heavier end of the RPI spectrum. Lots of flutey prog energy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iIK3fIlUuw
21Unreal City (Italy)
La Crudelta Di Aprile

One of the best RPI from last year. Lots of proggy riffs. Fabio Zuffanti of
Hostsonaten had a hand in this one as well (the guy gets everywhere it seems).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaaGHDhmV84
22Locanda Delle Fate
Forse le Lucciole non si Amano piu

Romantic prog with lots of soft melody. Great orchestration.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUPh7eGQcvw
23Goblin
Roller

Most well known for horror movie soundtracks but this is a great slice of 70's
prog. Quite dark compared to most RPI and quite a lot of widdling among the
doomy keyboards.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=As2AAiMBXRU
24Hostsonaten
Winterthrough

One of RPI stalwart Fabio Zuffanti's many projects. Laid back atmospheric music.
This is definitely worth a go along with most of his work but don't expect any
pyrotechnics. Also check other project La Maschera Di Cera and Zuffanti's solo
stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0GeE97WtnA
25Alusa Fallax
Intorno Alla Mia Cattiva Educazione

Emotional and very melodic with beautiful keyboard and flute. Worth trying, don't
sound much like their British contemporaries at all.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iojP4wCyTiM
26Jumbo
Vietato Ai Minori Di Diciotto Anni

Bit of a pick and mix of styles influenced by the Brit prog giants. Harder and
bluesier than most RPI. Absolute grower.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVFbBc6xAoc
27Cherry Five
Cherry Five

Influenced a lot by ELP and Wishbone Ash. Unlike most RPI, quite riff driven and
unfussy with a straightforward driving sound. Some nice jazzy sections and great
mellotron.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99Mou2UtiIk
28Nuova Era
Il Paso Del soldato

Keyboard driven symphonic. One of the few really good RPI albums from the 90's.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdNJJ2A9vjU
29Delirium
Il Nome Del Vento

2009 comeback album, better than their 70s stuff. Jazzy symphonic prog.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyUSnvSHhlo
30Il Balletto di Bronzo
Ys

Full-on and very complex busy symphonic prog. Not easy to love. Considered
a total classic by some people though.
