SCREAM!
04.03.14 | I know Frip will be pissed about no Relayer but TYA and Relayer were tied at 4.2 so I had to go with the one with the most votes
That being said my vote goes:
1.TYA
2.TaaB
3.CttE |

Close to the Edge (by a long shot)
lol you weren't willing to have CTTE and TAAB duke it out. I understand.
@JamieTwort I knew you loved Tull but Minstrel over CTTE man you're pretty obsessed. |
SCREAM!
04.03.14 | I've been going in chronological order since the beginning man haha
CttE would definitely have taken that battle for me but I'll be glad if TaaB moves on to the next round |

04.03.14 | As great as Minstrel is, there's no way it holds a candle to Close to the Edge. |
JamieTwort
04.03.14 | "@JamieTwort I knew you loved Tull but Minstrel over CTTE man you're pretty obsessed."
Picking Minstrel over CttE has nothing to do with me being obsessed, Minstrel is the better album (imo). CttE's title track is like the best thing ever but the other two songs don't live up to it. |
NeroCorleone80
04.03.14 | The other two songs aren't as good but are still both 5/5 |
mandan
04.03.14 | Yeah, I think GG will face off against Genesis.
ELP prob wouldn't last long anyway. |

04.03.14 | The Yes Album
Fragile aka the best Prog album of all time
Close to the Edge |
SCREAM!
04.03.14 | best prog album evr is obv a 3 way tie between close to the edge, hemispheres and farewell to kings |
ArsMoriendi
04.03.14 | @SCREAM!: Rush is so meh though. Geddy's voice might be powerful, but god is it just pure headache material. Peart's drumming isn't enough for me to care about them, as great as it may be.
I love Close to the Edge, but I always loved Fragile more.
|
JaySpiral
04.03.14 | First of all Animals is greatest prog.
Second of all why the fuck did you guys allow The Snow Goose to lose to Larks Tongues |
SCREAM!
04.03.14 | Meh.. I'm more pissed at Mirage losing to ItCotCK and Rush being flat out eliminated first round |
SCREAM!
04.03.14 | @Ars, you completely left out Lifeson! The solos on Villa alone elevate him to god-tier. Also, Geddy's bass playing is something else. |

04.03.14 | The Yes Album
Thick As a Brick
Close to the Edge
and btw, Rush are nowhere near Yes, Floyd or King Crimson, they don't have the classic English sound. They're good, but different. And believe me I am not racist as I'm a Canadian myself. |
Onirium
04.03.14 | @Fripp: Yeah Genesis and Gentle Giant are pretty much equal imo. Would be a hard choice. |
ArsMoriendi
04.03.14 | @Frippertronics: Well I guess that's because Alex Lifeson's guitar lines are just as forgettable as his name is.
Rush = great bass, amazing drums, forgettable but decent guitar, and headache causing ugly vocals. Yes just flat out wins. |
JaySpiral
04.03.14 | It sucks that Rush is gone, but at least they lost to a worthy opponent. TSG however is so freakin awesome, and Larks' Tongues is full of too much boring, random, avant garde, ambient type garbage to be better than TSG. |
JaySpiral
04.03.14 | Oh my vote:
The Yes Album
Thick as a Brick
Close to the Edge |
emester
04.03.14 | how may rounds in wave 1 are there going to be? |
JamieTwort
04.03.14 | Fragile doesn't even come close to Thick as a Brick.
If the next match up is Genesis vs Gentle Giant it will be almost as easy as this round for me. |
ArsMoriendi
04.03.14 | @Frippertronics: Yeah it was SCREAM!
I'm not too well versed in prog though. The only 70s prog bands I'm really into are Yes, Zappa's prog stuff, Pink Floyd, and I've heard 1 Camel album.
I've failed to enjoy King Crimson and Rush. Sooo I'm not sure I'm the best person for a prog debate.
|
Onirium
04.03.14 | @Ars: Go jam Genesis and Jethro Tull, man. Like right now. |
JaySpiral
04.03.14 | If next round is Gentle Giant vs Genesis what albums would it be? Genesis is probably easily Selling England, Foxtrot and The Lamb, but what three Gentle Giant albums? |
Onirium
04.03.14 | @Fripp: I wonder if there will be some Harmonium on this battle of prog. Harmonium vs. Genesis would be a good match imo. |
ArsMoriendi
04.03.14 | @Onirium: Eventually, I know half of Aqualung already... also you mean Peter Gabriel Genesis right? |
JaySpiral
04.03.14 | Yeah Ars go jam the other essentials, then we can have this epic debate of the century |
Onirium
04.03.14 | @JaySpiral: Octopus, Free Hand and In a Glass House I guess |
JamieTwort
04.03.14 | @Fripp: Free Hand over The Lamb? Wow. |
ArsMoriendi
04.03.14 | Give me like a week... I need to get to know the albums y'know? |
Onirium
04.03.14 | @ArsMoriendi: Well, yeah Peter Gabriel Genesis is the best. Forget Invisible Touch and s/t, it's crap. However, the first two albums of Phil Collins Genesis are really good. |
JaySpiral
04.03.14 | @Ars listen to Trespass through Wind and Wuthering, and maybe Duke.
@Onirium but what about Power and Glory or Acquiring the Taste. Free Hand and Octopus make sense. |
Onirium
04.03.14 | @JaySpiral: Yeah, Gentle Giant have like two standouts and lots of equally awesome albums, yet In a Glass House is my favorite of these. Also, Three Friends is pretty good too. |
JaySpiral
04.03.14 | Oh wow I didn't know how popular In A Glass House was on here until now. In my experience In A Glass House isn't as renowned as Acquiring the Taste or Ocopus or Power and Glory. |
ArsMoriendi
04.03.14 | I'm overwhelmed guys...
I mean after what I've heard from Aqualung, I'm not sure I even really want to give Jethro Tull my time.
As for Genesis, maybe I'll try Lamb Lies Down on Broadway soon and see where I go from there. |
Onirium
04.03.14 | @Ars: Man, it's because you start with the wrong albums... Try Tull's Thick as a Brick and Genesis' Selling England by the Pound. |
ArsMoriendi
04.03.14 | Tracklisting:
1. "Thick as a Brick, Part I" 22:40
2. "Thick as a Brick, Part II" 21:06
Next someone will say Lumpy Gravy is a good Zappa starting point... |
Onirium
04.03.14 | Seriously, Ars, TaaB is way better than Aqualung. Ask anyone on this site. |

04.03.14 | Red will win at the end anyway |

04.03.14 | Aqualung
Thick As A Brick
Close To The Edge |
ArsMoriendi
04.03.14 | @Frippertronics: Lumpy Gravy (although I love it now) would have scared me away from Zappa. Also Hot Rats gives the
wrong impression about his discography like completely, which is why so many users on here who start with Hot Rats
have trouble tolerating his other albums. You Are What You Is isn't a good start either, but it's still certainly my favorite.
|
JamieTwort
04.03.14 | I like TaaB and Aqualung about equally. Both are amazing in different ways. |
ArsMoriendi
04.03.14 | Absolutely Free is a pretty good starting point... but I'd say Joe's Garage or Apostophe(') for is the best to begin the
journey, especially since they have an inviting commercial sound. |
JamieTwort
04.03.14 | "well, I haven't heard TAAB sooooooooo..."
You're kidding right? You haven't heard the most essential prog album ever? |
menawati
04.03.14 | zoot is about the most mainstream thing he did maybe |
ArsMoriendi
04.03.14 | @menawati: Zoot Allures has to be my 3rd favorite of his and yeah its a pretty good starting point too. |
ArsMoriendi
04.03.14 | But his humorous stuff is also musically talented. "Fifty-Fifty" has my favorite Zappa guitar solo ever in it and its hilarious.
Also
the violin and organ in that song are brilliant. |
JamieTwort
04.03.14 | @Fripp: Well how can you say Close to the Edge is more essential than Thick as a Brick if you haven't heard the latter? ;)
Seriously, I thought you'd heard all the essential prog albums. |
menawati
04.03.14 | just got to listen to it all, even his records that i mostly fucking hate there is suddenly 1 track that blows you away out of the blue |
menawati
04.03.14 | what !? damn, frip listen to TAAB NOW ! |
JaySpiral
04.03.14 | Actually Close to the Edge and some Pink Floyd album will blow everything else out. |
menawati
04.03.14 | nah the final battle will be KC vs Tull |
ArsMoriendi
04.03.14 | Still prefer Fragile to Close to the Edge and even Floyd's best.
The bass in most of the songs on Fragile guys. |
JaySpiral
04.03.14 | Fripp you wanted to have a debate on prog and you haven't even heard TAAB. Shame. |
menawati
04.03.14 | yeh but 'how can the wind with its arms all around me' stupid idiot leaves verbs out of sentences |
JaySpiral
04.03.14 | I'm not saying Close to the Edge is my favorite prog, but based on what happened in my Prog Madness tournament forever ago, Close to the Edge and Wish You Were Here were the last standing. |
wacknizzle
04.03.14 | Aqualung
Thick As A Brick
Close To The Edge |
menawati
04.03.14 | yes Jay but since then there is a whole new set of people voting who will have had their opinions moulded by...erm i mean have different opinions |
menawati
04.03.14 | you need to retract your vote frip bcos it is against the holiest of holy laws on here not to have heard absolutely everything from a genre before forming an opinion you do know that i hope man |
menawati
04.03.14 | taab side 1 vs taab side 2 needs new list |
SCREAM!
04.03.14 | no really close calls this time so far hmm |
SCREAM!
04.03.14 | TaaB is pretty much raping it anyway if it makes you feel better |
ArsMoriendi
04.04.14 | Really Fragile is losing? Maybe I should give TaaB a listen... not that you Sputnikers usually agree with me. |
SCREAM!
04.04.14 | You seem to be a bigger fan of Fragile than most though. TaaB is my second favourite in section 3 behind CttE personally |
SCREAM!
04.04.14 | with that being said, there's still a few minutes to midnight but with Aqualung leading by 8, TaaB by 9 and CttE by a whopping 19, I think it's a pretty safe call |
KingsLeadHat
04.04.14 | damn, you should've chose Relayer like that Fripp dood said.
Fragile
Aqualung
Close to the Edge (wow so edgy) |
mandan
04.04.14 | I think I'll have to abstain from this one, although I prob would've gone full Tull. |
SCREAM!
04.04.14 | I'll still count your votes but as you can see it would take a lot for those albums to come back haha |
Onirium
04.04.14 | What? Aqualung has more votes than The Yes Album? |
mandan
04.04.14 | Yeah, looks like it's pretty settled. |
JamieTwort
04.04.14 | Aqualung is way better than The Yes Album anyway. |
BreakerdeGodot
04.04.14 | the yes album
thick as a brick
close to the edge |
laughingman22
04.04.14 | yeah! jethro tull made it |
TheSpaceMan
04.04.14 | Yes vs Rush woulda been a really interesting seed |
mandan
04.04.14 | I would've voted Rush easily on that one, they blow Yes away with the slightest of ease imo. |
TheSpaceMan
04.04.14 | agreed but they are both powerhouse prog that are unrivaled for their chops, Tull is like Floyd where
they are emotionally unique in the genre if you get what I'm saying (plus I woulda loved to see Jamie
choose between Animals and Minstrel in the Gallery) |
JamieTwort
04.05.14 | I would have to go for Animals in that situation. Picking between Animals and Heavy Horses however would be practically impossible for me (although the former isn't strictly a prog album so I guess that comparrison would be unlikely to happen). |
TheSpaceMan
04.05.14 | t/t on Heavy Horses is my favorite Tull song by a landslide, probably better than Sheep and the two
bookends on Animals |
JamieTwort
04.05.14 | Moths is my favourite Tull song and also my favourite song of all time. Love the title track but it doesn't come close to the
beauty of Moths for me. |
TheSpaceMan
04.05.14 | I don't remember anything else off HH sticking out besides Weathercock, but I haven't listened to Tull in ages (grew up around a lot of Tull fans). Always thought Aqualung and TaaB were more consistent but maybe I should really try to get into all of them |
JamieTwort
04.05.14 | Heavy Horses is one of the hardest growers ever. Took me many listens before I appreciated it as the masterpiece that is. That album has some of the best song writing I've ever heard. |
TheSpaceMan
04.05.14 | you've convinced me to revisit their stuff as soon as the summer rolls around and I'm home from school, my familys got tons of the albums on vinyl and I havent heard a song of theirs in years so it will be a treat |

04.08.14 | Aqualung, Brick, Edge |
