Dark and Dreamy

Haunting music to put you in a mood. A collection rrof some post-rock, drone, ambient, classical, rrsoundtrack, and everything in-between. Title rrsuggestions welcome, at first this started out as rra list of songs inspired by "Witches and War-rrWhoops: Early New England Ballads" from John rrAllison (via the Smithsonian collection).
1Bryce Dessner ft. Shara Worden
Death Speaks: No. 1 You will return

I could have just listed this album in its entirety. Shara Worden from My
Brightest
Diamond weaves a beautifully ethereal and dark dream with her voice.
2Giles Corey
No one is ever going to love me

Once you go Giles Corey, you never go back.
3Julia Kent
Dear Mr. Twombly

Swirling strings and a title sharing namesake of one my favorite artists, Cy
Twombly.
4Have a Nice Life
deathconsciousness

heavy and dark, Have a Nice Life doesn't mess around. You can feel the heartache.
5Xiu Xiu
Rose of Sharon

I listened to Xiu Xiu first in middle school, this song is intense, as is
everything Xiu
Xiu creates.
6Deafheaven
Please Remember

If you're not a fan of experimental black metal, you should check this out
regardless. Deafheaven keeps up with a mood of hopelessness but contains a shiny
glimpse of warmth.
7Eluvium
Indoor Swimming at the Space Station

10 minutes of ambient bliss.
8Whirr
Ghost

Side project from one of the Deafheaven members, Whirr brings you gritty and
creamy shoegaze with "Ghost."
9Hildur Gudnadottir
Erupting Light

Always drawn to powerful strings, this song was used in the journey to the
underworld in a production of Sarah Ruhl's 'eurydice'.
1036
Shadow Play

Ambient soundscape,
11Loscil
Endless Falls

Lay back, close your eyes, light some candles and listen to Loscil's "Endless
Falls".
Rinse, repeat.
12Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Dead Flag Blues

Seeing GY!BE live was one of the most unique concert experiences I've had. An
evocative musical experience, if you're familiar with darker post-rock or not,
you will
hopefully find a connection with this band.
13John Allison
Giles Corey

Obviously while determining which Giles Corey (the artists)
14SUNN O)))
Alice

My friend saw SUNN O))) live once and his hearing wasn't the same after. If you
like it heavy, this is for you.
15Mogwai
Travel is Dangerous

Get caught in Mogwai's net, and drift into the post-rock ocean.
16Max Richter
On the Nature of Daylight

You won't need to cut any onions to feel these feels. Title says daylight, but
the
strings seem to be crying out in rhythm with your consciousness.
17Mum
Now There's That Fear Again

The clinking/crunching/mechanical accents paired with creeping, child-like
vocals
makes this one of my favorite tracks from Mum.
18Earthmover
Two

Solid post-rock.
19Mono
Pure As Snow (Tales of the Winter Storm)

This should be higher on this list, if the numbers mattered at all. Tension
builds and
wanes, 11:26 of mind-numbing bliss.
20Arvo Paert
Cantus in memoriam Bejamin Britten

If rain were translated into strings, it might sound like this.
21Deaf Center
New Beginning (tidal darkness)
22Philip Glass
Company: IV
23A Winged Victory for the Sullen
A Symphonie Pathetique
24This Will Destroy You
Black Dunes
25Zoe Keating
Legions (war)
26Javier Navarrete
Pan's Labyrinth Lullaby

Even if you haven't seen the film, you can appreciate the tenderness from the
violin.
27Mogwai
Punk Rock/ Puff Daddy/ Antichrist
28Giles Corey
Winter House

Giles Corey is on this list twice for a reason, otherworldy.
29Keaton Henson
You

A tremulous voice, and a sense of honesty, combined with guitar and strings
prove
this artist to be a unique and worthy contender.
30Library Tapes
Fragment VII

Drift into a harrowing self-reflection while listening to Library Tapes.
